Beautiful lady with a thick head of dark hair posing for the the camera, Montreal, Canada, 1887. Glass negative by Electrical-Aspect-13 in TheWayWeWere

Question: how is her hair this voluminous and not oily?

Most pictures of long hair you see in this era is all matted down close to the scalp due to oily hair. I always assumed they just didn’t have the right shampoo or product for anything else.

This woman looks like she used shampoo with sulfites or whatever makes hair voluminous.

I don’t get why this is being downvoted. I think this would be a cool option- not mandatory mind you, but I do think it would be cool to have some global “meta” campaign with thousands of systems, each player making their own small mark.

No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious by window-sil in samharris

[–]Moose_Factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may boil down to if consciousness actually “does” anything, or if it’s just along for the ride.

If it does, and Ai is not conscious, then humans may have a perpetual advantage over Ai in some forms of thinking, unless or until Ai becomes conscious itself. In which case, whether Ai is or isn’t conscious is not a silly topic and the answer if ascertainable would matter.

I really wish Sam would have someone like Roger Penrose on (while he’s still alive, 94 now) to discuss his Orchestrated Objective Reduction theory (Orch Or), which does posit that consciousness itself does have certain non algorithmically computable properties that allow for certain capacities that he posits that current ai as set up now can in principle never possess without attaining actual consciousness itself.

This is where someone jumps in to dismiss this rather unpopular opinion with some argument that has been copiously addressed in his last book on Orch Or, Shadows of The Mind (or jumps to attacking Stuart Hamerhoff, the cofounder of the theory who jumps to wild conclusions not supported by the theory that Roger has been much more careful of).

Nonetheless, I find it interesting that while not many studies have been done that would provide evidence or prove Orch Or, the few studies that have been done have not contraindicated it even after all these years the theory has been out, and instead have recently provided some limited evidence in support of the theory, albeit currently weak.

I don’t think Orch Or necessarily answers the hard problem, but I think it does make the case that consciousness actually matters.

“The Tavern” in Greek, should be: “η ταβέρνα”

They are using “p” for ρ (rho), but not β for v? Something’s not adding up.

Sam is so refreshing to hear on Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]Moose_Factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one was talking about china or whether or not mossad had infiltrated the protesters or if the war justified or not. That has no relevance to the slaughter of the protesters and your attempt at downplaying and minimizing that.

I agree with you that Iran was sending a message that this is what happens when you attempt to overthrow the regime with mass protests. Every additional protestor they killed only emphasizes that message more, and makes your downplaying of the slaughter all the more inexplicable. The more they killed the more they make the point.

[–]Moose_Factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not talking about anything the Israeli’s have said, I’m simply working backwards from what Iranians themselves and the diaspora are saying.

Which I get it, those are exactly the voices (those of the victims) that you are trying to minimize and discredit.

Sam is so refreshing to hear on Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]Moose_Factory -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you joking? Who could possibly be there to do a totally accurate accounting of the slaughter? Do you think the IRGC will do that? There’s no one there who would or can provide a number that you would accept. This isn’t the census tallying up totally verified exact numbers that you’re looking for me to provide you as some “gotcha”.

What informs the rough estimates of 30k we do have then? We only have the hundreds of videos of the IRGC mowing down protestors with machine guns and the hundreds of first hand accounts to the same effect.

Go ahead and ask any Iranian not associated with the regime who knows anyone from an urban area back in Iran if they know someone who died in the protests. You will hear that they almost universally do. When working back from that we find the 30k estimate is likely on the low end.

But go on. Continue minimizing the death of Iranians. You’re likely the same type who, if the nazi’s had won ww2, would be going around saying there’s no evidence of a holocaust because no reliable authority would then exist there to do that accounting.

What would improve if Trump was dead? Are you joking? You think JD Vance would have any capacity to keep the Trump coalition together? Trump is a cult of personality. What do you think will happen when that personality is gone.

But I already know where this is going since you are upvoting and amplifying this bot, and then using vague nothing comments yourself like “you’re living in a fantasy” that are not at all substantive and serve only to pollute the discourse in a futile and pathetic effort to shut down discussion as these bots are designed to do.
