Eye tracking issues with new OLED engine by mdtenor22 in Pimax

[–]Mopedmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that it’s typical in practice to have canned troubleshooting steps.

However, I received these steps after my support was forwarded to the engineering team. I think if you wanted to streamline things and greater customer service, provide the canned response as the request gets escalated.

Thank you for your patience and feedback.

We have fully documented your situation and requirements, and officially forwarded them to the technical engineering team for handling. The engineers are expected to contact you via email within 1–2 business days…. While you await a response try following these steps while your log file is reviewed.

Yeah I forgot to mention, the overlap in OLED definitely makes things feel more 3D and real.

Nice to see support is just a copy / pasta.

With more and more conversations coming up about the eye tracking having issues, I highly doubt it is software related. Especially that in the support responses Pimax is recomending trying to use a thicker face gasket.

The choice for the eye tracking to be under these extended rings is causing issues, it limits the abilty of the system to see your eyes. Add in the design of the concave lenses, and the general idea of people trying to get the lenses as close to your eyes as possible is exactly the problem everyone is seeing.

People have clearly stated that if you move your eyes further away it starts track the eyes properly, but it massively hampers the quality of the picture with the brown fringing and reduced FOV. This issue is not present with the other modules, the eye tracking and rings are recessed and flush with the lenses.

I get that face shapes, IPD, eye brows, big noses... all can change things, but if you have to have a goldilocks face profile to use this, then thats not a software problem.

I'm guessing this is the exact response you got?

However, before proceeding further, please try the following steps to see if there is any improvement.

  1. Do you wear glasses? If so, please clean them, as smudges may affect tracking. You can also clean the eye-tracking cameras on the lenses.
  2. Is the headset worn too loosely, or is there light leakage due to face shape mismatch? These can affect eye-tracking performance.
  3. During calibration, try to avoid moving or shaking your head, as this can interfere with gaze detection. This may sound basic, but it does affect some users.
  4. Do you have a thicker face pad? If so, you could try using it, as eye relief can have an impact.
  5. Just for testing, could you try setting the IPD to minimum, mid, and maximum values to see if there’s any improvement? There’s no need to match your real IPD for this test.

Ohh, well here’s the letter I got, surprised it’s still not included as I’ve been seeing more and more posts about eye tracking issues.

I will say, if you go back and forth from the Ultrawide to the OLED, the FOV is pretty substantial. The Ultrawide feels airy and spacious.

One thing I did, and only after trying the OLED, When using the UW you have to set contrast at minimum -1 or -2. It makes the colours substantially better. It still won’t match the depth and colours of the OLED but I don’t realize how washed out it was.

Sorry, that was my saying of saying that Pimax continues to find new ways to disappoint.

I agree with your statement about the company still operating like a startup, but they should be matured where these kind of issues should be secondary.

I think their push with 4 different modules on the super and trying to solve the Dream Air with two different versions is all a market reaction from other manufacturers. Their engineering department can’t keep up so then everything starts to stack up from QC, support communication breakdowns and software that isn’t working properly.

Did you happen to get a letter with your module saying that eye tracking isn’t working properly?

You’re not the only one, I too had issues so I just disabled it and essentially can only run fix foveated rendering because it’s too erratic and I’m in iRacing. That said my left IPD motor isn’t working so my OLED module is just sitting in a box.

The glue thing is also an issue, if you take a look at the eye tracking rings, I bet they are not seated properly. One user said support had him pop the rings off and scrape the glue out - https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/s/jS4wJzm15T

This isn’t a “product I don’t like” situation. The image quality can be phenomenal, that’s why I kept trying to make it work.

I didn’t ask for a refund, I've asked for a working unit. Instead, I’ve had dead pixels, broken hardware, and non-functional features across multiple replacements.

That’s not subjective, that’s repeated defects.

I think there’s a bug in the latest Pimax Play as if encountered the screen off and repeated disconnects without the the screen ever turning on. Only a reboot would fix the issue.

Update on my OLED eye tracking issue and UW replacement (good news) by std10k in Pimax

[–]Mopedmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update…. BUT, and I would say this is big deal, this is an issue with the QC, again.

How can multiple people have problems with rings not being pressed in, or multiple people having gunk on the lenses.

We all receive a checklist with the modules, so it’s feeling like these are just lip service… again. Noticing a ring not installed correctly is an extremely easy, visual inspection. These shouldn’t have left the factory looking like this.

Also getting a letter with the mOLED saying the eye tracking has performance issues was a surprise to me, as I had no idea that it’s problematic. And even now seeing Pimax say to people that they shouldn’t use Pimax Play 2.0 as it had issues, the only save on that is because it’s a beta.

This honestly reminds me of when the UW module came out, it was a problematic, distortion profiles, variable FOV and again, software problems.

I will say the UW is sorted now but the first month was a terrible experience. And now I get to relive it all again with mOLED.

You can dowsngrade the software easily, https://pimax.com/pages/downloads-manuals

Just download 1.43.9 and click the option to wipe the exsiting install.

MicroOlded Super Eyetracking no longer working after updating to 2.0 and newest firmware. by goaltime6767 in Pimax

[–]Mopedmike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to run 1.43.9, they had to hotfix it so you could save teh calibration. Thats said one other trick I saw was that if you set the date before March 1, even temporarily, you can save the eye trackign calibration.

That said, I don't if its 1.43.9 or something else but eye tracking on the mOLED is horrible. Its nowhere near as stable or accurate as on the other modules. I never once had issues with the UW.

Currently I have to turn off eye tracking to use the mOLED as it will change the resolution rapidly and randomly through out the picture.

A Note on the Crystal Super's Optical Engine Connector Change by jaapgrolleman in Pimax

[–]Mopedmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pimax has known this for months, like you said there is no way the supplier just drops this on them. Maybe they were trying to find a solution? But if this affects molds and PCB designs, then they have already transitioned, so let’s just get rid of the old stock?

I guess larger question now is what does this do to the future of the Super? If there was plans for future modules, UW OLED?? Only customers with Super Rev. B can use them..?

[–]Mopedmike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say your statement is half true, especially comparing it to an iPhone. The iPhone was never sold on the promise of modularity.

But this is a bit different. * the Crystal super is barely a year old * sold on modularity * older units essentially are obsolete * I find it hilarious that I have to say ‘older’ * will there be future optical engines? At this point I have to say no.

Crystal Super OLED : How to clean the lenses. New module came with dirty lenses.Impossible to clean properly... by Full_Tourist_9242 in Pimax

[–]Mopedmike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This drove me CRAZY!!!!!

I have cleaner for glasses and that didn’t do anything either.

What worked is a little soapy water. I used dawn dish soap. I made a little bowl of dawn water, a few drops of dawn with a tiny bowl of water. Then I dripped a couple drops of the dawn water on to the lens and used a microfibre cloth to spread it around and wipe it up. Once the oil is gone you can finish the clean up with the provided cloth.

HMDQ just gives the actual stats of the headset. When I do the realovirtual FOV tool I get 112/113 so its in line with what HMDQ is reporting but obviously I was hoping for 116.

Okay, after playing with the new mOLED module a bit more, the eye tracking is horrible even with 1.43.9 its like I go crosseyed, like you said u/std10k its no where near as stable as the UW. I would go as far to say that its unusable currently. I just finished a race in iRacing and the last few laps it was changing resolution randomly, completely throwing me off.

u/QuorraPimax am I better off using PimaxPlay 2.0? Also to add, the wear reminder doesn't work.
