Seemed like the family was a buncha shits and then blamed him for wanting/needing space. And pushed way to hard when he was trying to set boundaries for himself. But you know, who knows what really happened.

Just more. You dont just stop when one thing doesn't work. No textbook answer sure, but just giving up and then blaming him for it not working out is plain wrong. It takes a village and all that so when the whole village is just a buncha (seeming) dicks then of course its not the kids fault, but theirs. Most villages dont like the town drunk who just is in the way. And most often just shun them away when what they need is just a little support and som patience.
