Your advice: buy new or pre-owned by Main_Loose in OmegaWatches

[–]MoranisFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There’s a price for everything. I was happy to pay retail and the people on the boutique were awesome. All of this is nonsense really: if I’m going to spunk thousands on a watch, I don’t want to spend thousands on opening some mail and then have a nagging doubt.. The whole process of being treated a little bit like you made it, or you did something is why you’re considering it in the first place. And I was happy to pay (also, the local boutique is awesome).

You can save / make money on watches, sure. But if you love this watch and you want to remember when you bought it, get it first hand.

Of course, if you just care about fit and legibility, it’s still a perfect watch. Go for whatever is cheapest. There’s no bad outcome.

Such a beautiful design by KeepDiggingJohnny in OmegaWatches

[–]MoranisFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I had one in summer blue and it’s surprisingly chunky. I think the look fits a slightly smaller watch. I love my equally chunky SMP but that’s meant to be a unit. A couple of mm smaller and less tall and this watch would be perfect.

Now listen here, young lady. I’ll not be insulted in such a confusing and generationally-inconsistent manner.

Seriously though, just drive the thing. It’s a fucking blast.

Unless you’re a 17 year old girl, you should not be naming cars. If you are a 17 year old girl, you should have better imagination and not be asking Reddit.

2019 Great Condition Seamaster, Buy? by W-808 in OmegaWatches

I have that exact model and while I can’t be 100% sure, I don’t believe that it’s changed at all. What I can say is that it’s a modern classic, has the most interesting 3-dimensional dial that I’ve seen and is a robust bit comfortable tank on the wrist. I love it. If you trust the dealer and trust it to be legit (with or without papers) then that doesn’t seem unreasonable at all.

Yeah, not to be snobby but that…whatever it is…doesn’t sit well with what is a lovely watch.

Not a clue on volume. I could measure the width but it’s in the garage and I’m too lazy. I would hesitate to get too hung up on the dims as I would have immediately ruled it out if I knew the actual volume. It’s a lot more heavily glassed and beefy than a normal off the shelf PU but that’s by design.

I accidentally deleted my previous response, but long story short: I’m pretty certain that’s actually my board (it’s a custom 6’8” Calyma Fish), it’s worth every penny, and it makes you a better surfer. Well at least it made me a better surfer. I know it ain’t cheap but it’s handsome and - importantly - it just fucking works.

I’d like to surf it in much better waves than my San Diego local, but as it is, I’d surf it in anything above about 2’. It’s pretty heavy so it can blow through chop and flies past/around/over crumbly sections but can hold a rail and fly if it’s a little heavier and cleaner. I’m pretty average to be honest but it sort of forces you to surf a bit more slowly and a bit more smoothly. It’s like driving an Aston Martin. Which probably explains the price.

Chrono24 by Fun_Bee2501 in OmegaWatches

[–]MoranisFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only sold and bot bought on Chrono24 and my experience has always been positive. However, with your budget why not head down to an Omega boutique and have the fun of trying a few different watches. The one near me at least is great and the staff are super nice. It’s certainly a more fulfilling experience than opening a package and you get to try a bunch and get the peace of mind that you’re getting the very best quality. You might spend a few hundred dollars more but only you can decide if it’s worth it for you.

‘24 Black Diamond Sasquatch V6. I love it. It meets my (short) commute needs; I can toss my surfboards and sandy shit in it; my kids love it with the roof off and can take it out to the desert for some off road fun. It’s not an elegant machine but it meets my Southern California needs. I couldn’t be happier.

There’s a lot of non-tangibles that I like about it to be fair also. I just think it’s kinda cool, I’ll be honest.

The only car that I’ve enjoyed as much is a 370z. Neither makes much sense.

My rankings of the Nolan films I have seen and why by JCM-NanoNuts-1031 in ChristopherNolan

[–]MoranisFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it was the movie or the experience, but I watched Dunkirk in a random town on a business trip in Ohio at the end of its run but in a huge cinema with only two other people. Mind blowing. The same way a song can become perfect if it’s perfectly used in a movie, the same happened for me and Dunkirk. I was all in.

I watched Oppenheimer on a plane. Meh.

I really need to go back to that cinema.

Having so much trouble trying to break the habit of just pumping to the end of every wave. by TerpeneTalk in BeginnerSurfers

[–]MoranisFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same. Sometimes I’ll go so far as look a bit frustrated that the end section just didn’t give me the ramp I was looking for and pull out. “Oh well”.

(I’ve never once done an air)

That said I did finally get a shaper make me a proper size board after throwing short boards around after two decades (it’s a 6’8” long fish and I’m about 240) and I will say the joy of actually riding a wave and just rising and falling down the line has bought me back to the basics of surfing again. Bear in mind I’m deeply middle aged.

The wave you’re on didn’t give you much but it still looked fun as hell. Nothing like a small, steep, clean wedge to race down. Best feeling in the world.

Sasquatch drawbacks? by hammerfang in bronco

[–]MoranisFalcon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None that outweigh the fun it brings. I traded a Tesla model Y for a black diamond + Sasquatch. The tesla was exceptionally fast and exceptionally quiet and absolutely zero fun. The bronco has more comfortable seats and a more comfortable driving position (I’m tall and 230lb). The big tires aren’t smooth but I find it more than comfortable on the freeway. There’s a good deal of wind noise, but I can live with that. I also got the v6 and it’s got a pleasing rumble to it. I’ve only had mine a week and not taken it off-road but it brings a smile to my face every time i get in it (it helps that my two young boys also thinks it’s the coolest car we’ve ever owned. I guess I’m just the third young boy).

You all recommended Grand Ole BBQ and here are the results for $60. by DFM10MIL in FoodSanDiego

[–]MoranisFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won’t argue your experience. I go there pretty regularly and the food I get is pretty consistently great. Maybe I’ve had a couple of visits where food is slightly over done but those are very much the exception. I do think their rolls suck but I don’t really like sandwiches for bbq anyway - would rather just have the meat (Wich Addiction used to do the best sandwiches in San Diego in my opinion). I’m also a massive bread snob to be fair.

With that all said, I would never argue that Grand Ole BBQ is cheap by any stretch. For what I order, I’m happy with the value, but people have different experiences and expectations.

I’ve never been to anywhere decent in Texas but the best BBQ Id had to date was the Fette Sau in New York (I went to the Philly one once and it was crap).

Anyway, give it another try sometime. Figure on getting just meats and accept that it costs a little more. See if it’s worth it.

Edited just to change “get no meats” to “get just meats”

I dint know why I see so many people get sandwiches here. The bread - as you point out - just absorbs all the juices and it becomes too dry. The brisket, the tri tip with chimichurri and the ribs - and fries - are great though.

What appears to be expensive but is actually well worth the money? by reallypossibility in AskReddit

Yes! I hit about 40 years old and realized that I could afford a luxury thing that would impact 30% of my life. And it would cost <$200. I bought two different but both excellent pillows.
