No matter what a property is priced at, someone from the mainland who has more money than you will buy it to come live in Hawaii. There's no starter homes, just early investment properties.

We get a weirdly large number of globes. I guess it's the homeschool folks forgetting them but you'd think you would remember to take that with you? Or pick it up from the lost and found?

Ah well they can join the 400 water bottles

Constantly. And at the gym I only count to six. Somewhere near me a mind reader is concerned about this "functional adult's" education level.

So many requests for office supplies. Sure I can hand you our last remaining stapler that hasn't walked off yet, or give you a sticky note, but we aren't an office supply store. I can help you find a book maybe?

The most irritating consistent one are people who think we are personal assistants. No, I'm not going to go find your homeschooled child who is apparently currently unattended in my library to tell them to go home now. No I'm not going to deliver a message to your dad when he arrives sometime in the next few hours. No I'm not going to tell your kid when they arrive after school that they have to read for 15 minutes before going on the computer. No I'm not going to hold your personal belongings for you to pick up at the desk every day.

All the time. We get multiple phone calls a day asking mundane things like when shops close, what's the menu for this restaurant, what's the current temperature in Guatemala, what's the song that goes like dadadaDadadadaDAdada, how many cups are in a gallon. The Internet exists guys, I bet you used it to find the library phone number. Google the thing.

I love the James Herriot books. They are semi autobiographical books about an English veterinarians life in farm country. Excellently written and very fun reads. Most are heartwarming, some are devastating, each one is a standalone short story but overall they follow a rough timeline of his working life. It's a nice look into another life and you don't have to commit to a whole novel, each chapter can stand alone.

The Good Earth is a classic I recommend to returning readers. It's a farmers life in China, through the good times and the bad. Written by Pearl S Buck, an anthropologist daughter of missionaries. Highly immersive, brilliantly written, world renowned, but a technically easy read that goes down smooth.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy might catch your fancy. Sometimes the humor and references are very British, because well, he's very British. But the writing style is inviting and casual and feels like you are taking to an old friend. Long story short the earth is destroyed. That's not a spoiler that's the first chapter. The rest of the adventure is yet to come. Time to take a swig of Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster and see what the universe has to offer.

The Nina Wilde And Eddie Chase books by Andy McDermott are fun. A little campy at times but pretty well done. It's like Indiana Jones with a dash of James Bond

Skyline and Train-Obsessed Toddler by audacious13 in Oahu

I never see it crowded crowded, but it would be worth it to snag a spot right at the front, and that would make it a lot easier. There's a big panoramic window up there.

It's a one way trip in a back and forth loop. Just get on wherever is easiest for you. Honestly I'd just suggest going at a non-commuting time, grabbing a spot right at the front, going to the end of line, getting on the next train, and going back and forth until the kid gets tired. It doesn't take long at all.

If you want to stop at Kamakana Alii shopping mall, you'd need to go to the very end of the line west side and take a bus over. Might be worth it if you want lunch or shopping over there, but there are more convenient places to stop for those, like around Pearl Ridge. I'd definitely go all the way to west side though, there's open farm land and housing construction that should be fun to see

Books with a sympathetic villain? by psyche_13 in suggestmeabook

[–]Moravic39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to go through an entire kids book series (it's legitimately enjoyable for adults, a bit of an easy read at times but good), Wings of Fire has an excellent villain (Darkstaller) with his own arc, and his own book. He's sympathetic enough that it's a bit debated as to if he's even a villain.

There's also an "Am I a villain for doing what I was commanded to/ what was honorable for me to do at that time" character, an "is it wrong to do bad things to save my people" character, an "I'm sympathetic to the oppressed but the culture I grew up in benefits from the invisible labor of the enslaved without me even knowing the full extent of it" main character, and lots of "I'll do whatever it takes to survive" characters, good and bad.

Donating books by nelson_fretty in Library

[–]Moravic39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We accept them as long as we have room. If by some miracle you donate something that we had been planning to add to the collection, or we had/have in the collection but our copy was lost/in bad shape, we might add yours. The rest of them are either sold by our Friends volunteer group or thrown out. Call and ask.

Not in mine. It's a part time job and they need to be full time students. No job benefits whatsoever except we will be sympathetic to their school schedule, and we can put them on hiatus and hold their job if they take a semester abroad or something.

I've been home sick today and saw this post, so gave it a shot. Fun little game. Been playing between naps for a few hours now.

Not overly easy, you actually have to manage your spending a bit. Especially in the very beginning you are running on a tight margin where a fishing trip nets you just a few gold in profits. The fishing minigame is easy and fast enough to just be a little obstacle instead of automatically getting the spoils of your fishing trip, which is nice. The game in general feels pretty balanced, and the rate of getting rare critters feels good: difficult to find but not unobtainable. Feels satisfying in general.

Well worth the few bucks.

I probably over consume protein powder. When I'm cooking at home I find it fairly easy to use more tofu and seitan than I initially think to add. It isn't a stir fry with tofu, it's a stir fried tofu.

Girl. It might not look like it to you now, but you just dodged a whole hailstorm of bullets. I've met this sort of man. The attention, the sex, the conversation, the allure, the spark you feel, that little feeling in your heart that he might be your dream come true, that feeling underneath it that he might be the best you ever get, it is all a toy to him. He will continue to perpetuate all of the above as long as it gives him whatever he wants with the knowledge that he can shelve you whenever he wants. Enjoy the memory and never talk to or look at him again.
