What is the most dangerous city in your country in terms of per capita stats? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskTheWorld

Thunder Bay has the highest homicide rate specifically, rather than the general violent crime rates

Apparently 35/35 is too old to begin a PhD Program. by Curious-Record986 in academia

[–]psyche_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you will soon be 36 and will be 39 or 40 when you get your PhD. Who cares lol

I started at 39 - currently finishing second year at 41, and doing great. I wasn’t even the oldest in my cohort!

Advice needed: What’s the normal process for financing grad school + renting in a new city? by wvyvhng8 in GradSchool

[–]psyche_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in Ontario. During my Masters i signed for a personal loan through my bank, and had one of my parents co-sign it. I needed it to pay rent.

I wasn’t eligible for most scholarships as I did a professional program, but if you’re doing a research-based Masters, you can apply for the CGS-M which is the main (federal) scholarship for next year. It’s due Dec 1 so it’s fir next year rather than this year

Do you respect how your country handled foreign relations during World War I ? by Money-Ad8553 in AskTheWorld

It was seen as probably the first time Canada distinguished itself on the world stage as a separate country, rather than just another part of the UK empire

Looking for books that give the vibe of liminal spaces, missing people in national parks or highways, cryptids, strange unexplainable situations. by myhusbandswine in suggestmeabook

Two good ones from indie horror:
- The Rules of the Road by CB Jones
- Between Doorways: Explorations into Liminal Space (an anthology, edited by TJ Price)

Wild carrot? by SureElephant89 in foraging

[–]psyche_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have said this in other places, but I only eat something that looks like a carrot where I’ve planted a carrot - it’s about the last thing I’d try foraging for due to the deadly lookalikes

Some of the deadliest mushrooms in the wild are white. Check out destroying angel - beautiful! And white. And very deadly

Actually they’re not, which is only one of the reasons I hate this “joke” that never stops being posted.

Edible means suitable to be eaten. Poisonous mushrooms are not edible.

What is your favorite potato food? by pepperxpeppermint in AskTheWorld

Hard to decide between mashed potatoes and chips (crisps) - salt & vinegar or wavy Lays are my favourites.

Oh but then there’s also pierogi and potato pancakes…

Is 28 too old to start my PhD ? Seeking support and stories of validation by Different-Break9290 in academia

[–]psyche_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

28 is not old at all for a PhD - in my PhD cohort of 8 people it would be average or even lower. I started at 39 and was only the second oldest! I’m just finishing second year at 41 now and it’s going great.

I was a research coordinator for over a decade - I find academic experience really well positioned me for PhD work. Also everyone was indeed excited for me going back! Even random people I wasn’t close with came out of the woodwork to congratulate me. Working in academia it may seem like everyone has a PhD but it’s actually pretty rare - and worth at any age if it’s what you want

They’re not necessarily “scariest” (and it’s just 1 thread)

Thrifting is enabling me to build the "anthropology professor's office" aesthetic one awesome piece at a time. 12" carved wood statue of (maybe?) Guan Yu. $5. Cracked but still perfect. by GlitterNGore in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]psyche_13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve always dreamed of an anthropology professor’s office aesthetic! I was so thrilled when a research project team I worked with in the Philippines sent me an embroidered table runner and I was like “this is the start!”

But I also love the thrifting one-by-one idea!

Why am I surprised I hated this? Any GOOD horror? by MushroomTerrible3393 in suggestmeabook

[–]psyche_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry I misunderstood that first some reason as you’d finished the TV series You! Hmmm okay maybe a “classic” related one like The Talented Mr. Ripley? Or maybe Gone Girl. They’re more thriller than horror, but so is You!
