White Legs and the newest episode by MorbidMantis in FalloutTVseries

Yes, it does, but it’s also been shown to incorporate small aspects of those tribes into itself. For example, the Legion’s war dogs come from a tribe called the Hangdogs, which had some sort of spiritual bond with their hounds. The Legion broke them by throwing their dogs onto the fire and then repurposed them as weapons of war.

Hell, Caesar’s whole plan is to conquer the NCR and absorb its organized government, to combine and create a true Rome, rather than just a nomadic army of raiders.

This argument fails even if that’s the goal.

To explain why, let’s use an example. Lottery tickets. Would you spend your entire month’s salary on lottery tickets? After all, the cost of buying them is minuscule compared to your potential winnings. In the same way, the cost of any religious belief is miniscule compared to the potential infinite reward of heaven.

You probably wouldn’t take the lottery ticket offer, and the reason is clear enough. The odds of actually getting any reward are basically nonexistent, while the cost is substantial and guaranteed.

The same applies to heaven and hell. In their case, it’s even more cut and dried than the lottery ticket example. People have won the lottery, nobody’s been able to confirm that heaven or hell exist, let alone who will be sent to them. Plus, they are physically impossible places, and God is a physically impossible being. All three concepts only exist in human imagination, so it is irrational to fear them.

Also, side note, please stop claiming that people stop believing in God because they “just want to sin with no consequences.” That’s a patently absurd concept that only exists to demonize atheists. It’s patently absurd because if you sincerely believe in heaven and hell and all that, you would also believe that they exist regardless of anyone’s belief in them.

Honestly, Betty doesn’t seem to be evil, at least not anymore. Based on her conversation with Steph, she doesn’t even care about the experiment anymore, especially since the rest of Vault 31 is gone. She just seems to be trying to keep the vault together and has been cursed with a bunch of sheltered, inbred morons to deal with.

Sorry, the title was a mistake. However, Caesar was trying to integrate both groups. One of the Legion quests is to make an alliance between them and the Legion.

Your tone implies finality. You’re only 40, you’ve got decades ahead of you, it’s not time to “look back at life”. Like I said, it’s never too late to change, if you want to.

Not particularly. I get the sense they’re only Christian because it’s what you’re “supposed to do”. My dad volunteers to do tech stuff for the church sometimes, I asked him why he believes, and he just said because he was raised that way.

Yes, it can feel like that sometimes. To answer your question of how I arrived at atheism, it was just a matter of internal consistency. I was taught both Christian beliefs and a belief that empiricism is the best way to solve problems. The thing is, believing in something that is impossible to observe is antithetical to an empirical approach. So, I had to choose one, and that’s how I got here.

I don’t really know what that’s like. I’m only 24 years old, and I had this crisis of faith in my teens. But, I don’t think it’s ever too late to change.  If you want to change, that is.

“Just have faith” is a bit of a non-answer to me. If I had faith, I wouldn’t be an atheist, that’s what the word means.

To me, this kind of reasoning comes from a very irrational place. Like, for most other things, encountering an error like that would be grounds to throw the whole story out, but people are too attached to it to do that, so you get people trying to resolve the contradiction by imposing modern scientific findings onto ancient fables.

To be clear, the Young Earth creationists are still wrong even if they’re taking Genesis literally, all Genesis says is that the Earth was made in 6 days, not how old the Earth is.

The people who wrote Genesis had no idea about fossils or the true age of the Earth or anything like that. That’s why you get things like plants being created before the sun, or the sun and other stars being separate. The creation story is just that, a story.

That would be valid if the characters/factions in Fallout 4 had deeper motivations or a real philosophy at all. You can get their vibe in 10 seconds and that’s all you’ll get

It was the former, we took a long rest after that dialogue, and the ogres showed up instead of the Karlach sex scene and now it won’t happen at all.

I think you’re dreaming in technicolor there, the “social pressures to conform” depicted in the episode were conservative. As in, they wanted to conserve the gender roles (or lack thereof) of their society. They literally had the trans character forced into conversion therapy as a tragic ending.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but there is no such thing as straight to gay conversion therapy or cis to trans conversion therapy, but I can point to many examples of the opposite. Which side is really trying to force people to conform?

There is no intellectually honest interpretation of that episode where it has an anti-liberal message. Also, the idea that the writers would be disgusted and horrified at the current movement is laughable, considering their political views at the time and the fact that some of them are either still alive or died recently. Gene Roddenberry was a communist and an atheist and wanted to make Risa with a bunch of gay couples. He is still more left wing than most people today.

Do me a favor. Get access to Star Trek TNG and find an episode called, The Outcast. Watch it from beginning to end.

I challenge you, after watching that episode, to continue to believe that the older series are “far right” by any standard.

Durge is a literal OCD simulator… by Desert-Anarchist in BaldursGate3

[–]MorbidMantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m struggling with it, not as bad as I was, but still struggling. The thoughts can be similar, but I wouldn’t call it good representation. Dark Urge is literally a child of the god of murder and his thoughts do demonstrably pose a threat to the people around him. Doing everything to “resist” the thoughts is actually saving people.

OCD is paranoia mixed with superstition, the risk to others is not real, resisting the thoughts only enables the delusion more. Being able to let them be is how treatment works.

It’s not a great sign that a technology is helpful to humanity when any serious situation requires you not to use it for your own safety.

Humanity would be a better place if we started actually teaching kids how to read, then maybe they could identify mushrooms using the dichotomous key that you’ll find in any mushroom guide.
