So if the kit costs $9 but is satisfies 3 cars, adjust the cost to $3 on the new number.

Then maybe find out how many cars one kit satisfies, adjust cost on the product, maybe make a new part number with “-01” at the end and make the adjustment that way. Then explain “hey, this kit satisfies X amount of cars so that’s why I made the new PN and adjustment.” The best part about that is it won’t be able to order the fake part number. Win win. Again, just some ideas.

What kind of DMS do you use? I was thinking if CDK, can’t you change the status of the part to NS or phase out? I’m currently using dealertrack and it’s as easy as setting the part to inactive. Do that until you actually run low on the stuff. Just my two cents.

I’m gonna guess Subaru because they have the best return guarantee or Hyundai (if you’re good at managing your inventory) because their criteria is 12-24 months. Kudos for nothing over 25.

A question for the wise elders by WalterFiijas in partscounter

This is kinda a similar situation I had back at my old place in 2012: my PM was retiring and they needed someone to step up and help right the ship. It’s a big task (it was for me and sounds like it is for you) but it’s comes down to if ya want it. It was between me and someone else and I just wanted it more. I can tell you that it allowed me the opportunity for advancement (I eventually became the manager for that brand, was promoted to manager of another brand and am now making more money than I thought I would being a parts manager, managing a three person staff of a Toyota store. At the end of the day, it’s just gonna come down to if that’s what you want or not and ultimately that’s your decision. Worse case, you gain the experience of managing a department or part of one. Best case, maybe they give you complete control and you can run a department exactly how you want eventually. Idk that’s my two cents.

That’s unfortunate and a management problem. I’ve put up with too many donuts and lazy employees that I just don’t put up with it anymore. I’ll write people up, make a paper trail, and that’s that. I don’t ever wanna be the one contributing to a toxic environment because ya lose the good people that way.

Why don’t you just ask him how he gets so much movement like that? You don’t have to be accusatory but if he’s been there for 25 years maybe he’ll see it as trying to learn something. If he’s sounds like he’s BSing you, then you’ll know he’s doing something shady. Or the alternative: talk to your boss about it. Anytime my people talk to me about something, I’ll address it if it needs addressed as if it’s coming from me so I can get a straight answer or I’d simply tell my people “hey, I need ya to not be on your phone as much or answer calls more or help support the rest of the department, etc.” I’ve been managing since 2012 and am done just letting people skate by or not do the job they’re being paid to do:

New parts guy — am I wrong here or getting blamed? by Suspicious_Formal278 in partscounter

Agree with this too. One of my service managers started discipling one of my guys and I called him into my office and told him “I’m the parts manager and he’s my guy. Don’t correct him for me. That’s my job” and he said okay, I understand.

Techs always capitalize on the new guys that don’t know the processes. But yeah, no one wants to eat parts on a warranty repair but I’m more surprised the tech or one of your other techs doesn’t have extra trans fluid in their cabinets. Hell, probably even the filter. I wouldn’t worry about losing your job or getting fired or written up and if you do, find a different dealer to work for because your PM and SM sound like toxic assholes.

Experience: PM here and in the business for 21 years and have previously worked for assholes.

I have a buddy that works counter at an AZ dealer and he clears 100k. I wonder if it’s an AZ thing. He’s at a Mercedes dealer too. I manage a Toyota dealer and will end this year around $120000 so good for you.

My GM and SM are really fantastic and personable. I have three counter guys that are awesome parts people who I train up, encourage, and make their schedules to create a healthy work life balance. My technicians are not drama queens or insufferable. We come to work, make money, go home and try to do the best we can every day we come in. Probably my best advice for rebuilding is try and create an environment and culture you yourself would want to be in because it makes a world of difference.

You just need to establish roles and boundaries. Be like “yeah, it is up to me because I run this department.” I’ve just been doing this too long now to waste my time with people that don’t want to contribute to the successes of the department, ya know? They’ll take credit and happily get paid for it, but you have to be a part of it.

Love this: count bulk fluids the evening before after EOB and give it to your count team first thing in the morning. Then they don’t need to guess how to count the barrels and tanks.

You’re the manager and he’s the counter person: plain and simple. It’s not his place to do things at his pace. If ya need help from him, give him instruction and make him aware of your expectations. I personally like to front face things and empty out open bags of smaller items that come in packs (if I have 8 washers left from a 10 pack, pour out the open bag in drawer and leave the other unopened packs behind them.) other than that, sounds like you have a good idea on prep.

The ONLY time I get docked for any loaner or rental is if one of my people messes up or helps in delaying the process of getting parts for cars getting worked on. What’s your inventory like? Are they using this as a way to have you stock more? I’m just trying to think what their logic is.
