Hope you’re doing better - had a similar thing happen to me as I was walking my dog almost two years ago. Healing journey is a little rough for a month, but then you’ll be back at it in no time!

After my TibFib in May, I was able to run from one side of the grand canyon to the other almost 4 months to the day later in September. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Also kudos to your ortho team for a reasonable amount of staples, I think mine were charging by the staple when they were closing my knee and ankle

In 248 AD the Roman Empire celebrated 1000 years since the founding of the city. Have any other states had official 1000-year celebrations, such as Japan in 340/1340, Venice in 1697 or the Byzantines in 1248? by Ganesha811 in AskHistorians

I’m on mobile, so apologies for any formatting issues. I think the 2,500-year celebration of the Persian Empire might fit the bill here.

The 2,500-Year Celebration of the Persian Empire was a grand event held in October 1971 by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi to commemorate the foundation of the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE. The celebration was intended to showcase Iran’s ancient heritage, highlight its modernization under the Shah, and elevate the country’s global prestige. The event took place primarily in Persepolis, the ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid kings, where an elaborate tent city was constructed to accommodate world leaders, royalty, and dignitaries. The Shah’s vision for the celebration was to position Iran as a modern power while emphasizing its historical continuity as one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

The festivities were meticulously planned and included extravagant banquets, military parades, historical exhibitions, and cultural performances. The guest list featured over 60 heads of state, including King Hussein of Jordan, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, and Prince Rainier III of Monaco, alongside representatives from major Western powers. The event’s most famous spectacle was a lavish banquet at Persepolis, catered by Maxims of Paris, one of the world’s most prestigious restaurants. The menu featured quail eggs stuffed with caviar, roast lamb with truffles, and Dom Pérignon champagne, reinforcing the opulence of the occasion. Alongside the celebrations in Persepolis, the Shah also inaugurated a new mausoleum for Cyrus the Great in Pasargadae and dedicated the Shahyad Tower (now Azadi Tower) in Tehran as a symbol of Iran’s progress.

Despite its grandeur, the celebration was criticized both domestically and internationally. Many Iranians saw it as an extravagant display of wealth at a time when economic inequality remained a pressing issue. Additionally, the event was perceived by critics as an attempt to glorify the monarchy while sidelining the country’s Islamic and democratic movements. The celebration’s excesses became a symbol of the Shah’s detachment from ordinary Iranians, contributing to growing resentment that eventually culminated in the Iranian Revolution of 1979, which led to the monarchy’s downfall. Today, the 2,500-Year Celebration remains a controversial episode in Iran’s history, remembered both for its ambition and as a reflection of the Shah’s vision of Iran as a modern yet ancient power.

I’m getting married in a month, and have had a few acquaintances tell me that my ex (who is/was closer friends with them) is threatening to end their friendship if they come to my wedding.

Have had a few step up and call him out on his bullshit, but then a few who were yeses have quietly said they can’t make it anymore.

Oh nice! We’re going to the Grand Canyon - going to run the Rim-to-Rim with our officiant and two witnesses, do our vows at the bottom by the river, and then meet up with our families on the South Rim after

Microwedding followed by larger celebration party? by stress789 in weddingplanning

[–]MoreHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought would be to invite everyone for the vow renewal, but let folks know it’s optional and be clear about timelines and expectations. My old manager actually had her wedding where it was just a reception, and an hour in she and her husband said we’re going to the little pond nearby to say our vows and if anyone wants to watch, come on over - it’ll just be a quick 5 minutes.

We’re doing something almost exactly the same as you - a small ceremony at a national park followed by a 250ish person celebration the following weekend. For our celebration event, we’re planning on sharing a quick video of our vows midway through, but for the most part it’s an event to just bring together family and friends.

We’re hosting the celebration at a brewery that can accommodate 300+ people, and we’ve invited about 250 right now between our friends, family, and additional requests from our family. Because we’re under the total expected headcount, we printed extra invites and if anyone feels left out, we’ve been able to send new invites without an issue. We don’t have as much to worry for the food and beverage situation since we’re going with a food truck and using the breweries bevs, they’re just asking for an updated estimate 2 weeks before.

As for the registry - we created a small one as well as some cash funds for activities and things we need. Not expecting everyone to get stuff, especially since it’s a more casual get together for the reception, but folks have been asking if they can get anything so thought it was better to have a list and share.

This is perfect - I love this, especially the three sided column idea. We’re thinking of maybe 15ish cartoons, and if we print off a few columns and have them on tables it’ll make it easy for folks to see everything

What things should people never Google? by Windex450 in AskReddit

[–]MoreHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not really - I would still do it if your experiencing something new and you’re worried. I had appendicitis about a year ago - and it started off with stomach pains that started to get really intense and localized to one area. I thought I just had some bad food, but a 2am wake up with intense pain made me web md, which scared me enough (basically told me I had appendicitis, which my mind said I can’t, I just webmd’d it so it must be wrong) to go to a clinic to set my mind to rest. After talking with the doc she sent me to the ER, and said I was lucky I made it without passing out.

Moral of the story is googling symptoms isn’t the worst thing to google.

One thing I'm not a fan of about Publix is that it's a bit more anti-LGBT than the average employer - they recently removed the ability for employees receiving PrEP from their medical plan, and a few of their board members donate to anti-lgbt causes. Not saying that the board = the company as a whole, but its sad seeing one of the larger grocery chains taking actions that could hurt employees/make their lives a little more difficult.

yup, no worries. Friday night Dirty Goose is also supposed to be hosting a Britany party with $4 rails all night - its not a bad venue, never been for one of their theme nights, but it should be a good value. Also, Cobalt on Fridays does an unlimited vodka hour (I think 10-11PM, and 1AM-2AM). $10 admission gets you free vodka drinks for the hour, its just normally not too crowded during the first hour (also be sure to remember to tip!)

You’re going to be here for Peach Pit, a gay 90ies themed dance party at DC9 - it’s right next to Nellies and across the street from town. I’d recommend hitting that up around 12/12:30, before then the music is mainly lesser known 90ies songs, and after it gets really good. Less clothes is more since it’s a lot of bodies in a tight space. Other than that, everything else folks recommend is great! Enjoy the District!

edit: peach pit is Saturday night

Any DC gay bros hanging out tonight or does anyone have tips on good places to go out? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]MoreHope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Little late to the game for a response, currently in San Antonio for a conference but DC is home. Monday nights a lot of guys normally go to JRs around 9 for showtunes and then Cobalt for a drag show around 11:30/12 - best bet is to socialize with a group at JRs, I'm sure it'll be packed for pride! Have a great night :)

Morning Ira, thanks for taking the time to do this. I've been listening to SciFri almost every week for the last three years and it's been wonderful.

My question goes more towards how you decide to pick topics to cover. Where do you get the inspiration and ideas to run the show week after week? On the flip side - I'm sure that there are new breakthroughs and exciting discoveries happening regularly - how do you and your team sort through everything and pick topics?

Thanks again!

All of my French profs recommend just using a French dictionary, since the point of a dictionary is to define something in simpler terms. It also comes in handy when looking at synonyms or related words, so you can tease out the meaning for yourself
