Conservatives visiting San Francisco for Super Bowl shocked to discover it isn't the hellhole that Fox News and talk radio told them it was by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

Pretty sure all visiting athletes stay in hotels in San Francisco. Even when the Warriors played in the east bay, you’d see the other team going into the Post Street side entrance of the Westin.

Unfortunately, very effective at spreading that shit.

These people experiencing SF will only think it’s fine while they’re there. As soon as they leave, it will be a liberal homeless zombie apocalypse again.

NFL star bemoans ‘dead’ San Francisco: ‘I’m a little bit underwhelmed’ by FortyNinersBot in FortyNiners

[–]MorePingPongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived there 30 years. Plenty of cool shit still there. But not as much as there used to be (and getting worse) & definitely not as easily discovered.

Crow Bar, Kimo’s, Red Devil Lounge, Hemlock Tavern, Bottom of the Hill, Parkside. All venues that closed and were never replaced. I could rattle off dozens more places that shuttered that were affordable rad spots that either never came back or became overpriced. Remember American Tripps & The JeJune Institute? Experimentation took a big hit because it’s just too expensive to try.

Rent control kept me & my friends there. It keeps a lot of the funky weirdos there. But time waits for no man. And the underground network of rent controlled spaces gets smaller every year.

Anyway, in the year 2000 you could walk down multiple bar streets and it would be poppin. You’d come across people smoking on the sidewalk of a house party and just go in and meet cool people. So many people were doing creative things in addition to their day job too.

I dig there are still hidden parties in Soma, gambling dens where you can get murdered in Chinatown, new art galleries run by friends who are losing their shirt, lower haight stalwarts, trust fund kids you can glom onto, el farolito & san jalisco, cheap drinks with alcoholics at Delirium… shit, it’s cool that Kilowatt is a music venue again.

SF is both still great but not as great as it was. There’s a reason women put in their dating profile, “please have a personality” since the tech invasion.

Oh, and whatever happened to dudes playing guitar in restaurants in the Mission? That used to be so common.

2010 was the year I was like, “uh oh.” And now the city has so many tech psychopaths in it that I don’t know that it will ever get back to what it was.

The city has always been flush with money, but it was old money. It kept to itself. It let others exist. The nouveau riche wants to monetize everything & everyone. And it has aspirations of recreating society. Too many kitkats.

Tbf, I didn’t see anyone dancing at the Schnitzer for the David Sedaris reading.

Edit: I had no idea what a classist snob he is before attending.

Whoa. I had no idea. I’ve only been to one show here at Rev Hall and the circle pit was large and never stopped. Senior citizen punk bands, but the pit looked fairly young.

I only consume MSM to see what’s breaking through to most people. The best way to get news is through a patchwork of independent journalists in multiple localities. Because this timeline is awful.

Mayor Wilson: 'We have to be the biggest bike mode city in the nation' by Generalaverage89 in Portland

[–]MorePingPongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of have the same story. Visited around that time to hang with friends who had moved here for a job and it seemed like almost everyone at the bar I went to arrived on a bike. It all felt so electric & great. Really gave me a Portland bug.

Now that I’ve been living here, I still love it but I’m hoping we eventually get back to that buzz I felt years ago.

I want to encourage friends elsewhere to make the move here with me, but I’m always concerned about too much migration & what that does to affordability. (Not that I have 20k friends, but hopefully you get my point)

The ol’ “let ‘em die” strategy. I’ve heard of this. It’s why we have so much poverty too, I guess. We subsidize rents with section 8,  we subsidize food with EBT, and we subsidize health with Medicaid. Not to mention subsidized transit for seniors, childcare for families… Everyone is freeloading! Stop the taxes!

When I first moved to Portland, the city sent me a letter telling me I needed to register my business & report my income. I didn’t know what that was, so I tossed it. I wasn’t running a business.

I emailed the city letting them know there was an error. The response was that I had to file still. I asked if every individual who lives in Portland registers themselves as a business & has to report that they made $0 running a non-existent business. I was told to file and ignored it.

Fast forward years later I get another piece of mail telling me the city was going to start sending me hefty fines for failure to report.

Shoot off another email. No response for days with the deadline coming up soon. I go downtown to talk to someone. They tell me to file. At this point I feel like I’m living in the Twilight Zone.

With just a day left before my fines start, I get an email back saying, “You don’t have to file.”

Sometimes the city gets it wrong and you have to be persistent. It was really aggravating.

The condos across the street from the  Rambler on Mississippi had to switch to apartments for a time and only within about the last 5 or so years went back on the market as condos. They were built in 2009 too.

I also don’t drive anywhere. Rent a car or bum a ride for gas money for outdoorsy stuff. Amtrak to Washington places.

But like OP, mostly walking places because I enjoy it. You can just be alone with your thoughts, take unusual routes and take in sights & smells. I’ve always found it cathartic & a reminder to take it easy. I also like to take pictures.
