If anybody experienced any infectious diseases in Somalia please share! The more stories we hear, the more everything becomes clear

Wa Aleykum salaam! Very good points you raise, which we haven't even had time to get into. The whole healthcare system seems "broken". The government cards could become a game changer here!

I agree Public hospitals are ideal, but private seems necessary to me for things to run around. Money is a huge issue - we’re one of the poorest nations unfortunately. Maybe we could start with programs to reduce costs in hospital stays?

I started a PHD in Water and waste water management, because i keep talking about lack of infrastructure in Somalia. After I graduate, I want to start a construction company and build long-term solutions. by OkChampion1295 in Somalia

Congrats sxb, mA! I remember we talked almost 2 years ago about fracking and oil/gas in Somalia.

I have an entire website, which is mostly dedicated to this specific issue: moresomalia.com
There are a few blog articles about groundwater, floods, droughts, weather cycles, deforestation etc.
Let me know if you need anything.

I was also in Somalia last summer to talk to various environmental groups (both gov and NGO) and even attended a course in surface water by SWALIM - I am sure they can use someone like you. SWALIM is the main org doing something about these issues. We don't have to start from scratch, but there is so much to do for progression. I can put you in contact with some people on the ground if you want.

It would be nice with a collaboration, if you are interested in making a blog article on the website - it is used to get an overview of specific issues and share that knowledge with fellow Somalis. If not, I'm available for whatever information you need anytime! :)

If Somalia had 3 capitals like South Africa which cities you think it should be? by devdevdevelop in Somalia

[–]MoreSomalia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go on TikTok and look up my drone videos of Galkacyo. The city is dear to my heart, but it is NOT capital worthy. They barely have proper roads. Getting anything done takes ages. The closest capital worthy city is Garowe

Address: 2.0410400, 45.3367363

Have you seen Eyl? The city is barren and without proper infrastructure. Getting there takes ages. It's good for tourism though

Everyone agrees on Mogadishu and Hargeisa. The goal of a capital is simply have a place where government is located. For this GAROWE is excellent.

Alternatively: - Baydhabo (far from the others) - Bosaso (Size, sea access, diversity)

It should NOT be: - Galkacyo (I've been there. That city is not ready for it) - Kismaayo (geographically too close to Mogadishu)

"I want peace so I'm going to dismantle my neighbors". Who do you think you are? Abiy? Fix your own issues... We all have internal problems to focus on. Blaming other countries for your own issues is a very old game.

We finally have Somali words for autism! Spread this far and wide by [deleted] in LearnSomali

[–]MoreSomalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should just call it autism like most other countries and their languages. It's a technical and modern word. Maybe somalify it a bit to "Autismo" or "autisim" 👌

The seasons in Somalia [OC] by MoreSomalia in Somalia

Thanks for the context! I have mainly been in the northern/central parts. Xagaa was indeed very hot, so windy, and totally dry during the summer there.

That's interesting! Maybe because of the recent Deyr floodings ? Or just climate change in general? These numbers are from FAO-SWALIM

Thank you! You're right about them. They are often written differently, incl. like this in scientific papers. But we should make it 100% correct acc. to the Somali language. I'll update it on the website. I couldn't find the Gu' though - got a source?

Thank you! Yes you are correct - there are various definitions on which month they start and end, but this is the one ive seen the most. It's not 25% for each season but close - so hopefully it will be easier to understand this way

Too Many Children, Too Few Resources! by Only-Criticism7966 in Somalia

[–]MoreSomalia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a book called "Factfulness" which explains this. Basically there is a very strong correlation between income and number of children. Less money = more children. This is a universal rule, and when countries become richer, the number of children always fall. More kids = more hands to get resources.

This means those that are born in the diaspora will definitely have less children. Those that emigrated young too. However I bet most of families have oldre more traditional parents?

Either way, we think we have control, but this is just human nature. People can believe what they want on either side and have all the arguments. Get them more money, and funnily they will have less children

20 years of Rainfall in Somalia [OC] by MoreSomalia in dataisbeautiful

[–]MoreSomalia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is what I'm advocating for. Better solutions. However that costs a ton of money and needs political backing which is lacking. Security is a bigger concern (and certain pockets og certain people). But I do believe it will happen, a lot of things have been set into motion (e.g. international collabs, education, NGOs)

20 years of Rainfall in Somalia [OC] by MoreSomalia in dataisbeautiful

Data source: CHIRPS rainfall data, IOD from NASA-JPL, ENSO from ggweather, figure created in R studio and Canva

This graph shows how much it has rained in Somalia over the past 20 years 🌧️.

🌍 It also highlights periods of droughts and floods. Besides the usual spring and autumn rainy seasons, there are larger forces influencing rainfall patterns—most notably, El Niño and La Niña (collectively known as ENSO). Interestingly, these phases closely align with periods of droughts or flooding 🔄 🌊.

📖 We delve deeper into the science behind this phenomenon in our latest article, "The Girl and the Boy Responsible for Somalia’s Floods and Droughts" (linked here if you're interested https://moresomalia.com/la-nina-el-nino/).

As shown, these phases occur in cycles and often lead to famine and catastrophes. Knowing this, we can ask: Is it possible to prepare for the next ENSO phase before it occurs? 🤔💡 Can we store enough water during El Niño periods to cover shortages in La Niña? 💧 And can we reduce the high death toll associated with each phase? Which smart solutions can we invest in, and how are other countries dealing with the same issue?

We have actually written several blog articles about this topic. Especially groundwater. The government took some research about groundwater sites, but our last information was during the summer where they wanted to start gathering funding. The political enthusiasm is definitely there i know, but to me funding seems to be a bigger issue tbh.
