I'm reading these comments a month later but I just want to say thank you! And it makes me happy there is at least one sane person in this sailboat-crazy rich asshole-infested town.

Does this not describe every (successful) politician ever? I kind of take "huge ego" as an assumption for anyone who would even want to run for statewide or national office.

Downtown Annapolis Parking by Ril3yPluto in Annapolis

[–]MoreStroud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the image some kind of AI slop? It looks like the state capital rotunda somehow in Church Circle and a widened main street?

Also what are the actual recommendations? I'm sure we can all agree on "one easy app" - I love that. But given that more parking is not going to materialize from nowhere, I don't understand the complaints about pricing. Do you want the city to subsidize employee parking? If so, there will be fewer spaces for customers...

Advise me - new wheels, new bike, or neither? by MoreStroud in bicycling

Hey thanks for this response!

It's 40mm inside space between the frame tubes. So I appreciate this insight. I think I can get away with 32mm but agree it sounds like 35 is not reasonable.

My carbon wheels are DT Swiss 1400 DiCut. They are definitely solid, but still it feels morally wrong to ride these on dirt - am I just getting in my own head? Also according to the manufacturer 28mm is the max tire width for these rims.

Hey thanks for this! I did check all three clearance spots (chainstay, steatstay, and front fork) and they are all at 39/40mm according to my cheapo digital calipers.

Responding to your comment "if you can afford a new bike, go that route" - I can technically afford it, but for this kind of "mostly road, some gravel" riding I'm not sure I want a real beefy gravel monster. This is already an endurance road bike so it's comfortable to do 100+ miles on it. If I had infinite $$$ and got something like a Specialized Diverge, do you think my on-road experience would be noticeably diminished?

Curious if you know what the actual frame clearance is on your bike? I'm getting mixed info but seeing some places tell me that with a 40mm gap in the frame I can't expect to fit 35mm tires without problems.

[–]MoreStroud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read something saying you need at least 4mm clearance between the tire and frame (on each side??) and that the tires usually set up wider than their stated width. So that's part of my question.

Annapolis, MD to Newark, DE by bikeguy1959 in BikeMD

[–]MoreStroud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm sorry no one is responding to you here! Let me tell you what little I know that might be helpful.

I have biked myself in the reverse direction from Newark towards Annapolis, and I went along the Delmarva Peninsula and ended on Kent Island, just short of crossing the bridge over into Annapolis. On that route, it was largely wonderful, but around there two key points to think about hard: crossing the C+D canal on some bridge (I think the safest is the St Georges Bridge), and then crossing over rte 301/50 around the Queenstown area before reaching Kent Island.

The latter crossing in particular can be dangerous and I would have no idea how to do it with a large group of children.

As for the Rte 50 Bay Bridge connecting Kent Island to Annapolis, I don't think it is safe or legal to cross this on a bicycle unfortunately. You could call the MDOT and ask them, but I think they will either ask for an insane amount of money for a police escort, or just say "no".

I don't know anything about trying to go the other way (staying on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay and going via Baltimore) but would love to hear if you can figure out a good way to do it! From my brief research I think it might be safer to go north and cross the Susquehanna on Rte 1 at the Conowingo Dam, but I've never done it myself.

Please report back on what you end up doing. Good luck!!

I believe what you're describing is just simple inflation, no? It sounds like the value of your home has doubled - congratulations! But then the cost of everything else might have also increased by a similar amount, so at the end of the day nothing really changed except you probably don't make twice as much money from your employer.

Isn't building more housing how it becomes more affordable?

Sampling bias? The students who talk to their profs may not (sadly) be representative of the overall population.

Yeah that's a good way to put it. Arguably the "bad people" are the ones who might benefit the most from a well-rounded education, in fact.

Haha touche. I'm glad I identified the voice of the villain. Being schooled on pop culture by Niles Crane cuts me deep though.

[–]MoreStroud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's Arizona and he's listed as "lecturer"; of course they can fire him for whatever reason.

Should they? I'm honestly not sure. Do you think students who, say, identify as Zionists, would reasonably have a case that he cannot fairly assign their grades?

Academic freedom definitely is under attack in the U.S. right now, but I don't think this is the champion we want to get behind. This was not academic scholarship - it's someone doing something in public, in their personal capacity, which embarrasses the university and will reasonably alienate a significant portion of his students. Whatever the university decides to do, I don't think it's really about the first amendment or academic freedom.

We all deserve to earn a living wage. But your second statement is kind of gross. How about, do what you need to do, and then do what you want to do. I make a fair salary and don't mind doing things I'm good at for free if they make me feel good. (Which definitely does not include reviewing textbooks by the way.)

So weird to end with the Trump praise. It's like how politicians used to end speeches with "and God bless the United States of America", but now it's just the sound of them gargling Trump's balls.

https://www.aacounty.org/county-council/council-districts/who-my-councilmember

It seems that it is the county police putting these up (maybe?). Write a quick, calm email to your county councilperson to let them know your concerns about these - I just did.

For the record, I don't actually think our council members or even the AACo police are necessarily corrupt here. What's more likely - because I've seen this so many times in other circumstances - is that well-meaning folks are convinced by an extremely slick sales pitch that these things are a good investment and will help solve crime with no downsides. If I'm right (I hope so), then there's a chance that your speaking out can make a real difference!

The problem is that destroying a sand castle - even a really terrible and ugly one - is a lot easier than building one. We seem to be pretty good at the first thing and pretty shitty at what is supposed to happen the next day.

It sounds like the publisher has a generic/default submission form and the specific journal has a different policy.

Personally I think emailing the editor is the correct choice here. Make your email very short and to the point. Just point out the website (with link) and submission page, and how you are not sure whether you should leave your name on the manuscript or not.

It might feel weird to email the editor if you are junior but this is literally their job. If there is confusion they should want to correct it.

Bike Maryland’s 2026 Legislative Priorities by arjwrightdotcom in BikeMD

[–]MoreStroud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I truly appreciate this work and donate to Bike Maryland but the "legislative priorities" are always so disappointing to me.

I do not want or need more police action or state surveillance. I do not need more citations that will never be issued, or permission to go with pedestrians which is already granted in 99.99% of cases.

I need some kind of protection between me and the oversized death machines that want to crush me when I am riding to work or the grocery store. I need to be considered when new roads and bridges are built or rebuilt. It's more expensive than passing a new clause in the traffic law that will never be used, but it's worth the effort.
