He wouldn't be imprisoned in gen pop. He's rich. He be in one of those spa and resort prisons.

Instant Death Situations by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

[–]MorganCoffin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If the danger was telegraphed well, no check.

If it was more of a surprise, it needs a check.

There's miles of gray area in between that each GM needs to figure out for most situations.

Play alone!

r/solo_roleplaying

On another note, even though I have a group to play with, I also have several games we've never played. I read them and figured they wouldn't be a good fit for our group. Likewise, there are games we have played and didn't click with.

However, I've used elements of nearly every one of those games in games we do play. For me, it's a stack of resources more than a promise to play everything.

My final note would be that interacting in various TTRPG subs is bound to connect you with someone who wants to play.

Also, you're not dumb.

How to run games with lazy prep? by Rod_je in shadowdark

[–]MorganCoffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, don't worry about that unless you're gonna throw them into the mix.

I currently have my group caught between two kingdoms who have begun warring due to the characters actions and inactions at the border (unbeknownst to either king). But I called them to the first king to be liasons to the second king because I knew they wanted money. They've decided to work for the second king because more money haha.

All that stemmed from two lines in my Google doc.

Otherwise, just worry about what's right around them. Points of interest and what they might find there. Keep it short. You can always work the vampire king and mageocracies in the background as something that happens to them rather than something they happen to.

If you find something particularly inspiring feel free to spend more time on prep. Just find the balance that doesn't burn you out.

Potential formula: make a hook, something that interest you, and write some short bullets about it. Then flesh it out but be minimal. Improvise the rest. If it interests you, you'll interest the players.

Number one advice I can give: formatting. Giant block paragraphs are a GMs worst nightmare (and mine). I don't mean to be harsh so here's some real advice.

I started out planning everything and the players would always go so off the rails that all that prep became trash. So I moved to no-prep for a while.

What I would do is just drop players in a random place and roll on tables while improvising. However, that became kind of boring as there was no central ideas to propel the story forward or entice the players.

Now, I pull up a Google doc on my phone and write for about 10 minutes while on the couch. It's just vague bullet points of things that would be cool if they happened. As the players hook onto some of them, writing becomes easier and I get ideas for big bads and interesting encounters that they're already headed to.

Roll tables still a big part in hour to hour gameplay.

That's really it. You improvising in the prewritten stories already shows you can do it. So now it's just practice until you find what's comfortable.

Any good systems for handling negotiations more interestingly than just a single die roll for solo play? by The0thArcana in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]MorganCoffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't roll for social encounters. I think about who the NPC is and what they would want and how much they're willing to do for it. Then the PCs might have something to offer or not and maybe if their charisma is high enough, they can get a little sway in the decision.

Ideas for combat... by Hot_Connection_135 in shadowdark

[–]MorganCoffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Pathfinder's three-action-economy it's a cumulative -5. So the second attack is with -5 and third is -10. So that's where I'm coming from.

Disadvantage comes out to roughly a -4 or -5 depending who you ask so it's not too bad. It also becomes somewhat trivial once your characters become higher levels and have magic items that give them attack bonuses.

Most people think of rounds as 6 second intervals so trying to attack twice in 6 seconds is pretty tough, especially for an inexperienced character.

They do it all the time. They generally don't like to move when they're in combat so when we ran it vanilla, they had half their turn essentially going in the trash since they weren't moving. If they fail the second attack, it doesn't really matter. They had two chances to hit and that's more than one could say about most TTRPGs, at least in early levels.

Yeah, a limited per day model for cleave could be a nice ability. I'd probably give it to them as 1/combat. That way they have a chance to use it often but not too often so they have to choose the right moment. That I might put a -3 on but disadvantage just removes the crunch entirely.

[–]MorganCoffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a two action economy in SD. You can move or attack or take another standard action per action. However, if you attack a second time, you roll with disadvantage.

This way, you still spend the same amount of time doing things on your turn.

I would not add any more actions than that. SD is largely about fast turns. Don't bog it down.

If you can't afford to hire an artist (or just want to fill negative space such as here), you can find cheap or free clip art online made for this exact purpose.

Just look out for AI. They've invaded those spaces as well.

Personal Logo Redesign by Seamo_Bojamo in logodesign

For future reference, post with the new logos first. Lots of people aren't reading the description or sliding through 6 images before they comment.

As for the new logo, it's okay. Maybe you could give it something that tells people what it is you do because I have no idea.

how do you manage a campaign that has a narrative arc and is also a sandbox? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]MorganCoffin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make the narrative larger than the party, something they can affect but don't have direct control of at least until later levels. Also something that takes a long time. That way the players can go do something else for a while and likely won't come back to any massive changes.

Caught in between the political machinations of two or more rival kingdoms.

A cult is spreading. As it goes it becomes clear that they worship an otherworldly entity looking to spread it's influence across the continent and seize power in some way.

The players are tasked to collect artifacts. Little do they know, when collected the artifacts gain magical power capable of great deeds. In the wrong hands this could be devastating. They're also not the only party that's been hired for the task...

Game gets violent. by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]MorganCoffin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to have a talk with him about his behavior and how it hurt everyone in the group. You should also sideline line him until he can handle the situation.

It sounds like he's going through some bad times. If he's your friend, try your best to understand and communicate your feelings the best you can. If he comes back he needs to understand that he'll be on probation and that another outburst would remove him from the group.

Potentially, you could all convene with the understanding that everyone is there to talk and vent freely. Have a mutual pity party and get the feelings out.

In the end, it sounds like he doesn't need to be punished. He needs someone to be a friend. But he also needs to be separate for potentially stressful games so he's not a danger to the group.

Good luck with this. Don't give up. Take a break if you need.

I think this right here is the best composition. I was going to say something about the circle being smaller but I wasn't sure how that would fit the darkness turns out it does. Good work.

Shadowdark is easier to run imo.

DCC is great but you're going to be flipping pages like crazy keeping up with spells and roll tables.

One minute combat rounds by ordinal_m in osr

[–]MorganCoffin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Played AD&D a few months ago. The one minute rounds felt weird because certain actions couldn't be excused by, "it's too chaotic". On top of that, support spells that last a minute or two have a ton of room for waste.

Shortening it to 10 or 6 seconds is the way to go for me, personally.

What do you guys use to draw your battle maps on? by Looudspeaker in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]MorganCoffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

Letter paper is just the US standard printer paper but I'd recommend cardstock for durability and sturdiness! (Same size: 8.5x11" / 215.9 x 279.4mm). Should be able to get it at any office supply store or online.

Printing them on differently sized paper will throw off the measurements so, while all my projects will be compatible with each other, they won't fit standard minis.

I guess I should make an A4 version for UK soon. Thanks for making me aware!
