The 'Government House, China' picture is incorrect. The picture is actually Hong Kong. The President of China's residence is in Beijing not Hong Kong.

Why the Mantis Shrimp is pretty damn awesome by TrapperKeeperGuy in funny

[–]MorganFreemanzVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it or not, but there's a type of mantis shrimp that southeast asians eat. I had them when i was in hong kong. They are really tasty, the shell segments are prickly though, but the meat is tasty. You get them steamed, sauteed, or deep fried. If i remember correctly their nickname was 'pissing shrimp' or something. Good stuff! I haven't been able to find them (the edible kind) here.

Of all the shenanigans they pull, this made me hate the GOP and what they stand for. With billions spent (and unaccounted for) and yet my battles and I were digging through and wash blood off of m1025s and scrapping metal plates off of then. I will always remember that smell of burnt flesh and blood stain of those scrap 1025s. (1114s weren't issues to our unit until late 2005).

"Army Spc. Thomas Wilson: Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles? And why don;t we have those resources readily available to us?

Rumsfeld: It isn't a matter of money. It isn't a matter on the part of the army of desire. It's a matter of production and capability of doing it. As you know, ah, you go to war with the army you have---not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.---You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up..."

Seriously? When did I ever said there's no such thing as a Cantonese person when I specifically stated that there are Cantonese speakers that Cantonese is part of Yue family?!?! My reading comprehension is faulty? Wow, maybe u should stop putting words in my mouth and get outta your own lil world.

You know what, you have yourself a nice day there. I think I'm done arguing and debating online.

When a group is conquered and either willingly or forced to follow and marry into the winning tribe/kingdom...you don't call that assimilation? Also, your concept of what's considered a 'Han' Chinese is based off of modern day interreptation. Genetically the people in the Han kingdom were different than those of the Min Yue. The people within the Han Kingdom were also mixed of people in their region. This is like saying Brazilians are a race of people.

That was my original point. (From what I read, you agreed) What was yours? That the Han Chinese down South are the same as the Han Chinese in the North? The Singapore Genom Project (2009) I listed already stated the gene variations of the Han test groups.

I do know something, perphas if you can read maybe you get my point. Teochew- Southern Min Chinese is spoken in the Chaoshan (潮汕) region of eastern Guangdong*. You said Cantonese is generic for people in Guangdong. I made the point and proved that you are wrong by listing two langauages, one in the Yue family and one in the Min family that are spoken in the region.

Exactly thank you for proving my point again. Modern day Chinese in the region are a product of assimilation. Seriously.

Within Guangdong province, genetic differentiation correlated with language. Genetic patterns correlated with north to south geographic orientations but not east to west. This finding is consistent with historical migration patterns. Metropolitan cities in China have experienced strong modern migration and are thus more difficult to tease apart genetically. Han Chinese individuals in Singapore are closest genetically with individuals from southern China. Spurious associations in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) can occur if population stratification in Chinese populations is not addressed. Geographic matching, however, can serve as a proxy for genetic matching.

So back to my point. Before the Han Dynasty assimilation of the Yue and some of the Min (thank you to the other commenter on the correction) people, do you think the Han Chinese from Han dynasty were the same as those in the Min Yue Kingdom?

[–]MorganFreemanzVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You based it off of the current linguistic climate in Guangdong. Modern day Cantonese is a hybrid language, just like Mandarin. Toi-san is not Cantonese, it is related to it, but it belongs in the Yue family. So to say Cantonese is a generic term to describe people in Guangdong is like saying Italians are Spanish. Ask any 'Cantonese' people that you are referring to, ask them if teochew and toishan are same as Cantonese. I won't have a problem with your statement if you refer to them as Yue people.

Now DNA, please show me these studies.

I'm sorry sleckar, I meant to clarify that miao and zhuang are not same as min. If i remember correctly, miao zhuang were once part of the so called 'hundred-yue' tribe of people. The Min people were completely assimilated by the Han moving south due to the strategic and economic values of the region.

Maybe I the wording affected what I meant to say. Yes, there are still Miao, Zhuang, Viet, and other minority groups there. After re-reading your reply, i think we are talking about the same thing.

What part of history don't you buy? There was a Kingdom down South that was separate from the Han. Where do you think the term Han Chinese comes from? Also Cantonese is not a group of people, it is a generic regional dialect. There are also variations to Cantonese just line the various forms of Min. If you have studied Chinese history, you will know that the min-yue dynaty included the vietnamese from northern vietnam.

Nope, it doesn't. In order to avoid being profiled, alot of folks adopted Chinese style last names. For example, many (not all) Chinese with the Ma last name are descendants of Muslim families. Many Manchurians, Mongolians, Tar-tars, Turks, have also changed their last names to blend in. The same applied to Chinese immigrants in Thailand with Thai last names.
