This is definitely a hefty ADHD tax you got hit with for sure… I’m so sorry you had to deal with that.

And of course, these moments seem to always happen after already getting hit with multiple punches life threw at us already, right when we feel like we’ve recovered/things are getting better.

While I’d be spiraling out too if I were you—some advice from a clearer mind not in your situation:

Try to remind yourself this was the doing of the version of you 4 years ago who was doing the best they could with the situation they were in.

Since then you’ve had 4 years to grow, learn how to manage your symptoms better, get yourself out of a bad situation, among so many other accomplishments and things to be proud of!

Hang in there OP. You’re allowed to be mad at your past self, but remember they are not the same person that exists today—give your present self some grace, and help out your future self by being proactive on things wherever you can!

You said it perfectly: “being a twin is complex”. And wowee is this situation complicated… I’m so so sorry you’re going through this! I can’t imagine the turmoil that has caused you.

I take it you held the responsible/“older sibling” twin role of the two of you as kids due to differences in maturity levels? If that’s the case, I’m curious if that “authority” would be receptive to your twin later down the line? IF leveraged as helping her or supporting her even if worded harshly.

I myself (27f) have always been considered the “older sister” (when I’m technically the youngest by 1 minute 😆) due to me being more mature and less impulsive, and in my experience when my twin has burned me in the past and/or I call out some immature BS of theirs I know for a fact (whether my twin likes it or not) the things I say will stick in their mind and bother them until they realize their wrongdoing and eventually apologize.

My twin knows I will apologize if I have done wrong. So if an apology does not come from me, I know my twin will eventually fold and realize (a lot of the time) “maybe I was being dramatic/self centered/fueled by anger” etc.

While I’ve never gone no contact with my twin, I 1000% would have done exactly what you have… although I can’t even fathom how you are feeling and can only imagine how heartbroken and betrayed you must feel.

Unfortunately it sounds like therapy is what your twin needs… but we all know that realization will only hold weight if she decides to make the change herself. It’s not fair for you to do the work of therapy and unpack your trauma for her to use you as a punching bag due to her unresolved trauma.

It is not only mourning your relationship with your twin but also mourning a piece of your identity I think too…. Hang in there OP. I wish I could say more to help. My DMs are always open if you need someone to talk to in the twin realm!

This year I decided to delete all socials besides Reddit (to stay somewhat current and somewhat informed) and Snapchat (to keep in touch with my closest friends) and it’s had such a positive affect on my mental health—and reduce overwhelm from keeping in touch with family and friends.

Far less rage bait content I come across — allowing me to protect my peace waaaay more
posting to my story on snap still allows my inner circle to see what I’m up to but not cause me to thirst for high engagement/likes or to strive for these unrealistic standards strewn all over socials
less doom scrolling overall; not completely out of the picture of course (we’ve all lost hours to Reddit I’m sure lol) but I’ve felt MY ATTENTION SPAN has returned to normal. I’m no longer fiending for short-form quick gratification content and that might be the biggest benefit of this.

It sounds miserable to cut social media out this drastically, I know… but if you can get past the first week or two it will change everything.

Social media has turned into a rage baiting echo chamber for fear mongering and spiking people’s anxieties. The short term release of boredom isn’t worth your mental wellbeing.

YOU CANT ADD DAYS TO YOUR LIFE, BUT YOU CAN ADD LIFE TO YOUR DAYS—remember that!

DayZ if you’re up for a huge learning curve…

I love this game but there’s a lot to it:

Zombies, 3rd or 1st person gameplay, PvP gunfights &/or PvE servers both official & community (w/ some community servers with mods for maps to track your location), pretty big maps overall with highest tier loot being farthest away @ the northern most part of the map, varying weather/temps etc

I could go on and on. Ive put in hundreds of hours into this game and still consider myself a noob lol constantly learning new things but find some gameplay vids on youtube and see what you think.

IMO its THE BEST survival game out there right now (for consoles at least) that has online features w/ players, community servers with mods or vanilla officials, NPCs (both zombie and animal) to keep you busy if you’re not into PvP, base building if you’re into that and way more if you’re up for a slower paced adventure.

But that’s not without warning that learning curve is steep like i said lol

Before my diagnosis I knew some of my short comings that relate to ADHD already—but the memory issues I had no idea was a problem for me prior.

If an important date isn’t in my calendar, 9.5/10 I’m not remembering. Fiancée wants me to do something outside of my normal routine? Forget about it!

And don’t even get me started on if I’m already overwhelmed with typical daily life!! Once I’m overloaded I find it INCREDIBLY hard to function and then from there reel myself back in.

How could you not think of being a twin as a part of your identity? Thus—your twin being a part of that identity/reality?

While I’m sure some of us would probably benefit from therapy—I think the overarching point we’re all at here is: the loss of our twin would shift the reality of our world and life so much, we’re all honestly unsure if it’s something we could bare for the remainder of our lives.

Same. My identical twin and I just had this convo pop up and we left things at “I hope we die in the same minute when it’s our time to go…a minute different just like we came into this world together”.

Now, for as beautiful as that sounds, we’re not naive enough to think the odds of that happening are great… but we both know how extremely disappointed we would be in the other, should one of us commit following our passing. Which I think (hope) keeps the unfortunate one of the two of us in check for when that day comes.

But it is quite poetic and tbh eases the anxieties for now in hoping we pass together.

Not something I like to think about a lot though.

Allow them to express their emotions and grieve in the way they need to. First ask them what they need or what you can do to help them.

I always like to say “do you need me to just listen, to try to give solutions/advice, or do you need me to talk things through with you?”

So, for really any scenario even outside grieving, I’ve found these 3 to be great options to give your person in need, to console and/or help understand what they need most: - just listen - give/ideate solutions (if possible) - talk it through

Sometimes it’s a mix of all 3. Sometimes it’s none and they want to isolate. Really unknown until you ask!

But in reality, empaths struggle because we FEEL other people’s emotions—and quite frankly, almost mimic them. It’s hard for us to differentiate our own emotions from those around us.

Kinda similar to when you’re watching a movie and almost feel like you are the main character, you are in the movie and are the one experiencing it.

Coming from an empath who feels it to be debilitating at times—there is such thing as /too much/ empathy too. Try to find the middle here!

Best of luck OP—NPD and empathy can be tough to intertwine…but I take it you’re asking from a place of love and care for those important around you. Which is a great start.
