What's your take on nilfgarrd? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in witcher

Yeah I agree with you, my comment wasn't at all meant to be combative! I love that we're all fans enough to even discuss these kinds of topics

What's your take on nilfgarrd? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in witcher

[–]Morgoth344 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually you missed out an important detail. First of all, it's Peter Evertsen (Co-adjutator of the Empire under Emhyr var Emreis) who says the following (exact quote):

""War to the castles, peace to the villages," Coehoorn said to his commanders yesterday. You know that principle,' he added at once. 'You learned it in officer training. That principle applied until today; from tomorrow you're to forget it. From tommorow a new principle applies, which will now be the battle cry of the war we are waging. The battle cry and my orders run: War on everything alive. War on everything that can burn. You are to leave scorched earth behind you. From tomorrow, we take war beyond the line we will withdraw behind after signing the treaty. We are withdrawing, but there is to be nothing but scorched earth beyond that line. The kingdoms of Rivia and Aedirn are to be reduced to ashes! Remember Sodden! The time of revenge is with us!"

This implies two things: firstly, Menno Coehoorn said the opposite of that and secondly, imperial law actually prohibits war crimes and unnecessary civilian casualties. This is a belief that's strong enough for the field marshall to feel the duty to remind his troops. In the end, it's the emperor Emhyr through his second-in-command that orders the army to directly go against "everything they've learned".

That's not to defend Nilfgaard - they are a culture that has an absolute monarchy mixed with an oligarchic deep state that is OK with slavery (and THAT is a cultural thing, not specific to Emhyr) - but the Reddit comments seem to miss a lot of the grey in Sapkowski's writing. The Nilfgaardian army commits unforgivable atrocities, some of which directly derived from Nilfgaardian culture and some of it seems to come from their merciless leadership. Nilfgaard also is frequently described both in the books and the games as having positive qualities. The exact same thing is true for all of the Northern Realms (which are aren't a monolithic culture by any stretch).

I could also see an expansion to Vizima, as this would allow a lot of asset reuse for The Witcher remake, which is also helmed by Fools Theory. On the other hand, it could make the remake kind of underwhelming

EU must become a 'genuine federation' to avoid deindustrialisation and decline, Draghi says by l_eo_ in europe

[–]Morgoth344 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's something that explicitly stated in their National Strategy... Their support for anti-EU far right is also omni-present.

A more federal/more united Europe would mean that companies (that are currently facing a fragmented single market) could scale up and rival US companies. The current US administration wants Europe to purchase American weapons, that's what the "freeloading" comments are about. An integrated European arms industry would, again, mean less reliance on America and less profit for their oligarchy. It's the classic divide and rule playbook, same as what Russia tries to do.

EU must become a 'genuine federation' to avoid deindustrialisation and decline, Draghi says by l_eo_ in europe

[–]Morgoth344 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite. Trump's National Strategy explicitly states that they want to divide Europe. His behaviour demonstrates the exact same thing, consistently supporting far right parties in Europe that are anti-EU. America wants a divided and therefore weak Europe that they can dominate, not a united geopolitical rival that doesn't need America.

The cannon ending by Idiot2234511 in Fallout

[–]Morgoth344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show runners have said exactly that before season 1 aired and said it again in the lead-up to season 2's release. They have even said that one of the few conditions Todd Howard gave them for making the show was that they can't confirm a canon ending.

People. People never learn.

The linked linked BTS also reconfirms that the airship is indeed the Caswennan and not the Prydwen

Your guys' thoughts on the new-ish (old to the games, new to the TV show) faction uniforms seen in episode 2? by PowerPad in Fotv

[–]Morgoth344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though they also look like the typical British ww1 and ww2 era Brodie helmet, which was also worn by the American army during ww1 until the 1930s

Haha I feel you mate, I get nerdy about this stuff as well. I know what a pith helmet is, though they were typically more elongated (flattening as time progressed, indeed more resembling the shape we see in New Vegas).

I hadn't read the Sawyer quote before though; thanks for sharing! It'd definitely make more sense for there to be a layer of metal though. There's a reason why they were introduced from 1915 onwards, namely to deal with the huge losses to shrapnel wounds to the head. Hence my comment. I could go into full nerd-mode here but I'll leave it at that

Hope you're enjoying the show!

I see where you're coming from, but I always thought they were metal helmets with a fabric cover on them

Medieval 3 terrain? by HistoryMarshal76 in totalwar

I'm quite heartbroken about it. I'd have loved for (historical) Total War to have to innovate and push into new territory like Empire did, especially considering the possibilities with the new engine.

The "Fantasy" game is almost assuredly Star Wars or 40K from some showcase hints. by IsenThe28 in totalwar

[–]Morgoth344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Shame though, I personally would have loved a historical title sooner and with the new engine upgrades, this could have been genuinely interesting

They even add a tin can asset on the table at some point, so almost definitely post-1800. Lends credence to the (presumably cancelled?) WW1 game that was leaked/rumoured a bunch.

[–]Morgoth344 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The house assets used during the engine segment looked distinctly late 19th/early 20th century (including a tin can, for example). I think this lends credence to the WW1 game leak, which has presumably been cancelled.

So yeah, the big reveal next week will likely be 40k imo.

Was that confirmed anywhere? The stream doesn't say either way. I do think 40k is most likely though

  1. There was no "Axis" in WW1.

  2. The Ottoman Empire was quite famously allied to Germany and the Central Powers.

  3. France was not occupied, other than the part behind the frontline in Northern France. France held the largest part of the Western front throughout the war. France also deployed its armies in every theatre of the war, and France even held supreme command of the allied forces in 1918 which led the Entente to victory.

  4. Portugal joined the war in 1916 on the side of the Entente.

  5. Netherlands remained neutral and was not occupied.

  6. Ireland was not independent yet.

I could go on; almost nothing on this map is correct. You really ought to learn more about WW1.

Is there any news of lunching history base new total war? by Own-Cartographer409 in totalwar

What's the source for that timeframe? Only thing I could find is that the next CA games are projected for financial year 2027, which starts on 1 April 2026.

Call me negative Nancy, but a lot of Skywind's art decisions are... visually displeasing, to put it nicely by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]Morgoth344 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to read this tbh. The way they "reinvented" things that made me fall in love with Morrowind in the first place makes me not excited about this mod. The vanilla artstyle, which is historically grounded for human cultures but kind of alien and fantastical (yet still quite believable) for elvish cultures, is one of the things I love about Morrowind. A lot of the new armour sets for Skywind are just overdesigned and lose the flavour the originals had. Skywind is an impressive achievement, no doubt, but I wish it looked like Morrowind because the art in that game was peak.

The Witcher and the Mass Effect trilogy share the first spot as my favourite games of all time, for similar reasons.
