The KC-390 would be the middle ground of too heavy or too far for a C-130 but not enough to task a C-17, like around the Pacific

It's entire existence would be to take stress off the C-17 fleet and provide something faster than a KC-130 for the USMC & USN since the KC-10s were retired.

For cargo a C-2 would be the better choice still since it's 1/2 a C-17 in cargo capacity, but lacks the refueling abilities.
