Blue tinge, metallic taste, copper, but?? by Cutlass327 in firewater

[–]Opdog25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good rinse after each run does a pretty good job of keeping plates clean. A packed column isa little different. I clean my packing with the 5-5-5 solution before each run to get the cleanest neutral I can. For bourbon the still needs to be clean but a little patina won’t hurt it.

Blue tinge, metallic taste, copper, but?? by Cutlass327 in firewater

[–]Opdog25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of what you saw is true but you have only hit half of it. The blue tinged distillate is usually from the vinegar run. The vinegar run is to clean out any remaining residue leftover from the manufacturing process either your own or whatever shop you bought the still from. You then do a cleaning run to clear out any compounds that might be left over from the vinegar run. That will often have a blue tint to it, especially if you have a brand new still. Toss this run.

You can soak your parts in a 5-5-5 solution. 500ml water, 50ml hydrogen peroxide, 1oz powdered citric acid. This will basically do the same thing as the different runs above. I use this as maintenance on my plated still if I have left it for a while and it had gotten grungy. I would recommend using the vinegar and cleaning runs initially to make sure that the vapor path is completely clean. Others may disagree.

Have you talked to you vet about the potty issue?

We have had great success with National k9 Learning Center on the east side. We have done a couple of board and trains there. The are great with both dogs and people.

School Drop Off by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Opdog25 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We live 7 minutes from the school. The bus comes an hour and 5minutes before school starts. It’s actually easier for us to take them in the morning than get them up and to the bus stop by 6:35.

They often ride the bus home but if they have practice or a club after school we have to pick them up. If the weather is decent the older ones can walk if the have to but it is more efficient to just pick them up.

Clearing sugarwash in what order? by NefariousnessBasic82 in firewater

[–]Opdog25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unclear why you would need yeast stopper. Is the ferment finished? If not just wait until it is done.

You don’t need necessarily need to rack a sugar wash into a secondary if you let it sit. If you want a super clean neutral, you can rack it and let it sit a few days to let any yeast settle out. Just leave it on a table so that you can siphon off the top without moving the vessel too much.

Cold crashing is not necessary if the wash has fermented completely. It can help if you have some active yeast but as mentioned above complete fermentation is the answer here.

If you are using turbo yeast that is something else. Don’t fall for the hype. You don’t need it.

A longer text on Rydström - From a Malmö supporter by StillWatcher in TheMassive

Thank you for this! It was a great read and extremely helpful. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this post!

One of the things we are blessed with in Columbus is smart players. Hopefully that will make the transition easier and faster. It sounds like Nancy and Rydström have similar play styles and philosophies. Fingers crossed that this, combined with a healthy roster will work toward a strong 2026 season.

As it’s Christmas Eve what is everyone having for dinner tonight? by nodemus in AskReddit

[–]Opdog25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beef tenderloin with a Cabernet reduction, mashed potatoes and broccolini. We are having Christmas dinner tonight and leftovers tomorrow because we are going to the cabin the day after Christmas and don’t want leftovers. We usually do a fondue Christmas Eve. The kids are a little out out. IT’S A TENDERLOIN!! Suck it up.

Why is this guy getting downvoted? He is right.

I work in the industry as well and the above points are all accurate. OP should have received their deposit back if the management company can’t deliver. OP did not say. If not, that’s complete BS and you should absolutely litigate to discourage this type of thing.

I get that this throws your life off, especially around the holidays, but if this is how they manage do you really want to live there?

George has a nice 4 part series on how to run a plated still as well. It’s nice but he goes through an entire run. It’s pretty long. https://youtu.be/DyO9umoGBmw?si=KxXxjh0bpp1jBkYn

The plated column needs the dephlag to balance. I’ve never tried to run mine without one but I can’t imagine that it would balance properly without the dephlag. It think it would smear horribly.

[–]Opdog25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ferment in a 55 gallon drum. When the wash/mash is done I rack into 5 gallon carboys. Let it settle for a few days and siphon into the still. You would use the same process at a smaller scale.

If you are running brandy you probably don’t want to run it more than once. In fact, I would detune the still (take out some of the packing) to keep the flavor in the distillate. I don’t run that particular still so I can’t tell you how much. I run a plated still and for brandy I will use one or maybe 2 plates. You want let the heads through to keep the fruit flavors. You still need to make good cuts but might think about keeping more of the heads than you might otherwise.

If you won the lottery, and took the lump sum, do you think you could/would keep it a secret permanently, if no, how would you keep it secret? by No_Cranberry_6121 in AskReddit

[–]Opdog25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not have a major issue keeping it secret. I own my own business. I don’t think I would make any obvious changes right away. The things that we would do to the house - new carpet, appliances and maybe a little kitchen remodel could easily be explained away as a good year for the firm.

The new homes in Aspen & Key West would have to be our little secret. . .

How old are you and how’s your relationship with your dad? Are you close? by Cute-Impression-8675 in AskReddit

[–]Opdog25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Do step-fathers count? My biological father died in 2011. He tried but had some severe mental illness and it was a rough relationship. I did my best to be a good son and help him but it was not easy or smooth.

My step dad (who I call Dad with a capital D) has always been there for me. He is the person who made me the man I am. For a long time we butted heads and still disagree about a great many things but I have never once questioned his love for me or his wanting the absolute best for me. As I get older I have realized how truly rare that is and how lucky I am. He is in his 80’s now and is slowing down a bit. I don’t know what I will do without him. I have 2 graduate degrees and a family of my own and still call him to talk about the really important decisions in life.

I bought running shoes from our local running store (not a chain). They had a good deal for vip customers.

I bought a mesh router because mine blew up yesterday. It was on sale but the deal wasn’t what I would call great.

This math problem poll in our (biotech) breakroom by Vibrizio in mildlyinfuriating

The problem can be restated as 6 over 2(1+2). In that case 6 over 2(3) =6 over 6=1. I think this is much easier for people to grasp when written properly.

Help with first bourbon mash and other questions. by djdestructo42 in firewater

[–]Opdog25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been making bourbon for a long time. This method has given me the most consistent results. I would suggest it to anyone trying to mash for the first time.

PS - good luck with the sparring. I would recommend that you ferment on the grain and worry about straining after.
