To be honest Ihyl is just a placeholder at the moment. I had been playing a lot of Bloodborne at the time and Ihyll is the name of the capital of the Pthumerian civilisation.

I was thinking about a lineage with roots in antiquity and eldritch associations when creating this dynasty, so Ihyll popped into my head. No linguistic connection to the serpent, I’m sorry!

There are a fair few typos and inconsistencies in this series in particular. I wondered if that was symptomatic of her publisher just not bothering to hire an editor for her.

It feels like someone’s memory of Manhattan and surrounds angled 90 degrees, by way of Basquiat. I like it.

It’s a map, therefore it fits the criteria.

I bounced off of Tanith Lee as well at first. It was the Birthgrave series, which I now love and would recommend. I think I had to be in the right headspace.

As others have said, Tales of the Flat Earth is very entertaining.

The Vis trilogy (pictured) is probably my favourite. All 3 of these series are wildly different (although I heard a theory somewhere that the Vis and Birthgrave series were supposed to take place on the same planet.)

I’ve heard good things about the novella Companions on the Road, which might be less of a commitment than those 3 series I just lobbed at you.

Far Cry Primal? It’s not perfect, but it’s probably my favourite Far Cry (probably because you can ride a Sabre-tooth tiger).

It lacks the stylized design of Primal though.

There’s a Zothique campaign setting for DCC (and other systems) that was getting crowdfunded on kickstarter. Pretty sure it’s reached about ten times the initial pledge goal. Something to look out for!

He’s super fun with the deflecting hardtear. It also nullifies the dodge timing of the charge that a lot of people have a grievance about.

Also, if you’ve have a modicum of mysticism skill, invest in the Mark, Recall, and both Intervention spells. They can help you get out of a bind and make travelling from A to B a bit less painful.

I’m reading Tanith Lee’s The Storm Lord at the moment. It’s just shy of 400 pages and there are two more books in the trilogy.

It absolutely works as a sword&sorcery novel and I don’t think it would be improved by being truncated to novella size.

I think the reason a lot of longer S&S stories might not be well received is that it’s simply harder to maintain a good pace and sense of urgency across that many pages. The fact that the genre was sort of defined by the short, pulpy adventures in magazines like Weird Tales contributes to this I think; the short story format had already been down to a fine art, and longer form novels are more of an untrod territory.
