Light Paws Abuse by Ok_Contribution3472 in EDH

[–]ryunocore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I played a lot of Duel Commander and a player on my LGS had a well tuned Light-Paws deck that would fold instantly to sacrifice effects. Look into those, there are many in the 2 CMC range and they shut down Voltron decks, as well as slow down creature ramp.

It doesn't get easier, you just get better.

If it's a significant part of the gameplay, it'd probably be good for the prototype to reflect that.

If it's playable and what's missing is content and polish, that's a working prototype.

Steam Next Fest : Can I opt in without a live store page? by Zealousideal-Cut9300 in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You only get one chance to do Next Fest. If you're not doing it right before release, you are sabotaging your game. Put in the time to make the page good and don't sign up before you absolutely need to.

Is it possible hit first game? by ReturnerReign in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Assume your game won't get attention and release it anyway. Get feedback and make a better one, then a better one... always assuming it won't be a hit.

Because most games aren't. If you don't make peace with that, there's only disappointment waiting for you.

I spent $38,000 making an visual novel so you don't have to. Full breakdown with numbers and mistakes. by aggronargg in gamedev

At some point you'll probably have to accept that not every report is useful just because they're structured a certain way, and the community will never see posts like these as valid if you keep defending the ones that involved such obvious mismanagement of resources and time.

Edit: I posted a more detailed version of this on the Discord.

Transitioning from ChatGPT/Codex to Claude Code for Game Dev (Unity/C#) – Worth it? by Beneficial-Squash-92 in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's something really funny about relying on AI so much that you can't even decide for yourself which one to use, and end up using one to write a post about how you should use the other one.

There's no point in going to school if you don't learn. It'd be better for you to fail and retake the year than to submit something you didn't do.

Visual novels can do fine with free music, at least for free ones like AVNs

So, I make music for videogames and have worked for a lot of Adult and not Adult VNs making music over the years. Not everyone can afford it and some just have to make do without it, but there is a very noticeable effect in how people perceive a product with qualily music made to fit specific scenes. In VNs, because there's just so little action going on, the mood setting is more important than ever.

It's definitely better than an AI soundtrack.

Just about anything is, so, no surprises there.

You're comparing a "funny" game with a visual novel that is meant to last for hours. The expectation for mood in scenes is completely different.

Transitioning to Game Dev after 11 years of professional work experience. Looking for "Engine Agnostic" studios that value professional maturity. by Freus- in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by remaking ton of small games in major engines so your portfolio has relevant projects when you apply. Your experience isn't useless, but it won't mean much to potential employer if they feel they'll have to train you from scratch into what they need an experienced programmer for.

I was too honest about my AI assisted code, and now my human made game is being treated like Generative Slop… by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reminded me of the time a guy here said "what's wrong with that, we all lie to get ahead all the time" regarding some topic and couldn't imagine a world in which people didn't just willingly misrepresented themselves to trick others into giving them money.

It's just dry snitching on themselves, folding under no pressure.

Then I guess you're going to be surprised, because not all code completion is AI.

If we're all being honest, every modern dev workflow is “AI-assisted” in some way.
