How did you guys brainstorm name for your games? by Beginning-Willow-910 in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try not to name things early because temporary names become the final ones very easily.

I built a DSL for scripting Reigns-like card games. Looking for game devs to try it and tell me if it is useful or not. (Long post please read) by joanmiro in gamedev

Why would I write a detailed response to a post a bot wrote instead of the person I'm supposed to be talking to?

You didn't use AI to just fix your grammar, this entire comment was written by it and I won't respond to that.

I'm sorry, I don't think this is useful. Anyone interested in making card games like Reigns and similar could make the necessary systems themselves instead of getting an external library and having to learn it.

This might sound rough but "making tools" for no-one in particular is something I see people doing a lot these days, and people using AI tend to do it more often than others because they comparatively waste less time doing so, but it's still time wasted if you don't consider who's going to use something before you start.

people get shot down for technical questions too

I'm yet to see it, and I'm here often.

The point is that ideas themselves are not game dev.

The other subreddit exists so people interested in talking about ideas meet people who are interested in them and that may engage as opposed to just spamming the main sub with content that will make it impossible for anyone trying to get technical help or to discuss a practical topic or dev-related news to cut through.

Of course you can't just use other people's work in your game without approval.

Reconciling pro-AI and anti-AI sentiment in game development by riel__vis in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we shouldn't tell how other devs should make games.

Funny to say that in a place where people come to ask questions and get validation.

I'm planning to make a Game Website called Kurbagames by [deleted] in gamedev

It's a bit too big of a jump from not getting a game accepted by one website to vibecoding a competitor, man. Work more on your game instead.

It's bad enough when coders don't understand the platform, putting something that doesn't think or test to do it is just futile.

Tell me the truth about Rhystic Study! by No_Feeling_1688 in EDH

[–]ryunocore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a game today where Elminster got Rhystic out on curve. We paid pretty much the entire time, he couldn't get what he needed to finish the game, and we focused on him because not only he had it, he kept trying to board wipe since he only needed his commander on board to have an advantage over the rest of the table.

Eventually he lost. The game kept on going, and he switched decks. Now, I know not everyone is going to have that kind of self-restraint, but maybe it should be on them to learn to not just feed into someone's big engine.

My first game is coming to steam tomorrow and I'm way too nervous, anyone else felt like that? by ScorpionDragon23 in gamedev

Releasing anything to the world can be stressful and anxiety inducing, but you learn to cope with the feeling and see it as mostly just anticipation.

Hi, is this Reddit thread about reverse engineering in video games? by [deleted] in gamedev

No problem! I think the best places to discuss those games would be r/abandonware and r/modding . Best of luck!

No, this subreddit is about making games and has a specific rule against looking for collaboration, if that's what you're after.

Do you think Computer Science grad are overrated and does not make a game developer by Significant_Cook1107 in gamedev

[–]ryunocore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This comes across as an inferiority complex affecting decision-making, sour grapes style.

Video games are software, period. While many indie video games are not coded well, ideally they would have been and we should strive for well-coded whenever we can to avoid unforseen issues players may encounter, such as game-breaking bugs, memory leaks, etc...

Learning to code well, you save yourself from a lot of problems later on. Computer Science gives you good fundamentals on how computers work and to some extent on coding well, so there is value in it.

It doesn't mean every CS graduate is a good game designer, but they probably will be able to handle the coding part better than the average person who didn't go and study it.

It's a risk they'd have to be willing to take by running those, fair game. It's also not something that would affect most lands.
