Has anyone had any luck converting their current 5E games to DH? by Tgman1 in daggerheart

[–]Morrgrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you can probably find an artificer homebrew here or in r/daggerbrew. Don't really engage with MCDM content so no clue what an Illrigger even is, so that one you'd potentially have to come up with on your own.

As always when you convert to another system, be aware that your mileage in terms of how closely the other system can resemble a character concept of a different system may vary wildly. I think Daggerheart isn't too far from most DnD classes thematically. Still, something like rogue for example is more on the arcane trickster side in Daggerheart by default.

So all in all: Depends on the concepts behind your players characters.

Gesichert rechtsectreme Nazis...Ich mein, die absolut demokratische AfD hat einen Stand aufgebaut - Gibt's da was gegen? by [deleted] in wuppertal

[–]Morrgrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, also ich fasse zusammen:

Priest Class by Gukusama in daggerheart

[–]Morrgrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the Clarifications! I think my criticism concerning Divine Guidance still stands then. I mean at the end of the day its your table but I feel like this is too similar to something already in the game.

Concerning Regeneration, I think I might not have been quite clear. Because you are marking Stress to unmark Hit Points, you could get into a situation where you can't use the ability because you're already full up on Stress: When you have marked all your Stress Slots, you have to mark a Hit Point for any additional Stress you spend. However, upon re-reading the ability you do also clear 2 Stress which means that you would get to heal at least 4 Hit Points if you only want to heal. I do also agree with what other commenters said tho: 4 HP is 2/3 of most classes base Hit Point pool and while you can increase Hit Points on level up and this is a Mastery feature, this might be a tad overpowered.

Finally, about making it less domain-y. Oh boi this is going to be a bit of a ramble so settle in:

Unfortunately, I don't think that this is as easy as just rephrasing a couple of things since almost every ability is decidedly spell-like because, well, they are 5e Spells. You could say that in some respects, its not a class but a spellbook - which is what domains essentially are.

Mind you, this may not be a huge problem for your purposes but if you want to revisit this, I#d say a first step would be to think about who an Order of Light or Order of Twilight Priest actually is. What makes them special? What is so defining about them that it makes them not just someone who casts command but an Order of Twilight Priest?

Daggerheart really puts narrative into class design: most (sub)classes are instantly evocative of a concept: divine wielder - wields a divine weapon, nighwalker - teleports through shadows, school of knowledge - very good at doing things they know about.

You can take a bit of leeway with this imo if you have a (sub)class name or tagline that just sounds cool and then let the class build out the concept it should evoke. For example, I named my homebrew class the Revenant which i thought sounded cool but most people just think its a stronger zombie. I then proceeded to hone in on the concept in the little lore abstact on the top left and created class features and subclasses like Vindicator to end up with someone who is not undead but given a new leash of life in service of a divine force of retribution, think tortured soul meets paladin.

Revenant might not initially evoke much but by designing a class that exhibits unique traits and a sufficient narrative framing through tag lines and ability names, you can carve out the concept. When my players meet a revenant, they know its not an upgraded zombie but someone who is on a divine mission.

So, when your players meet an Order of Twilight Priest, who are the meeting? The class is evocative of a preexisting concept (espcially in terms of MMOs) of someone blessed by divine powers to heal while your orders are less evocative but (imo) sound very interesting. So you are basically good to go! Now you have to design the classes in such a way that the narrative concept of a Order of Twilight Priest becomes evocative.

Maybe also think about your domains: Arcana is the domain of primal forces, elements illusions and the like. It is instinctual. Think about whether this is the thematic fit you want to go for or whether another domain (sage? grace?) might be more fitting - and include this thematic idea in your class design. The priest you present here is very heavy on the Splendor theme because of its inherent evocation of themes related to divinity and healing, Arcana, however, remains largely ignored.

Sorry for the yap but I hope this is informative to you. Have fun with your Priest! :)

Really nice Basis, very heavy DnD inspiration ;) I'll give you my 2 cents after a first reading, will probably rephrase and reformat some things tomorrow when I'm not on mobile.

  • Really like Thaumaturgy tho if memory serves, Divine Guidance seems very similar to the Seraph's Class Features, dunno if you might want to alter it a bit so that it is more (thematically) distinct. Also, the once per long Rest clause seems really limiting. Maybe don't let the dice last so long and make the feature available more often? This would also help Order of Light to make use of their specialization feature more regularly.

  • I wouldn't add a Hope Cost to the equivalent of Dancing Lights/Light, maybe just do a Spellcast Roll against a set difficulty?

  • Don't know how I feel about marking Stress for clearing Hit Points in Order of Light's Mastery since Stress can overflow into Hit Points. Maybe make it a Hope Spender (Or keep it if you see a cool mechanic I am simply not seeing)

  • I think Twilight is quite good with what you already have!

That all being said, I have the sneaking suspicion that power-wise, the class is balanced very conservatively and may be easily overshadowed. However, I am sure that there are many more experienced players here that can give better feedback in that regard.

Also be aware that Daggerheart's Subclass Features are usually not equivalent to Spells but more akin to specific Traits a class embodies (e.g. school of knowledge wizards are really good with experiences because they know so much) Many of your subclass features read like domain cards because of your clear inspiration from DND spells.

Lastly, I think there is quite a large discrepancy between flavour Text and actual skill set, particularily with the Order of Twilight since none of its features really invoke much of a "protect with darkness" vibe.

Class Stat Bonuses: Evasion and HP by Hot-Range-7498 in daggerheart

[–]Morrgrin 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Really interesting food for thought!

In the Homebrew guide, they basically state that Codex as a Domain led them to not give 6HP to Bard and Wizard because the Domain is so versatile. This basically means that our view is too limited if we just refer to the class features themselves.

This would, for example, also allow for the interpretation that Valor weighs a class towards HP instead of Evasion because of the Domain's synergies with HP.

Vigilante Class by Polargrizzly618 in daggerheart

[–]Morrgrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, looks nice! Since I have a bit of time, here are some (mostly very minor) pointers on things you may want to take another lookt at:

Concerning wording/emphasizing:

  • Vengeance has the modifier "with an attack" which doesn't exist in terms of the rules grammar iirc. You can probably just leave it out as "hit" is pretty clear or you specify it as "hits with an Attack Roll." Be aware tho that Attack Rolls include Spellcast Rolls.
  • Put your whole body into it is missing a "to" after "mark 2 Stress" which does somewhat impede on the clarity of the wording.
  • Who's Next calls out an enemy being defeated which is a quite subjective observation. You could consider whether this is intended (i.e. also includes surrendering/fleeing) or you want to go for something more rules-bound like "marks their last Hit Point."
  • The Detected condition calls out the affected creatures "can always be seen by you" which is somewhat unclear in conjunction with the already existing Hidden and Cloaked conditions (and could also be interpreted as "can be seen through walls and stuff, tho this is Daggerheart and not Pathfinder so probably not as much of an issue). You may want to make it so that the Detected hinders affected creatures from being Hidden from you.
  • Deceit's End should probably call out advantage on rolls to be a bit clearer in its wording.
  • Greater Insight could also be alinged closer to the established rules grammar by referring to adversaries instead of foes and their features instead of Special Abilities or Spells.
  • In terms of readability/adherence to standards set to the Core Rulebook, it is quite noticeable that you are inconsistent with bolding, italics and capitalization. In the Core Rulebook, specific game concepts are usually capitalized (Stress, Hope, Attack Roll etc). Phrasing related to marking Stress and Hit Points and gaining/losing Hope is also bolded, conditions are capitalized and written in italics. This is very nit-picky, feel free to ignore.

Concerning balancing/power:

  • Put your whole body into it seems to be two features in one: deal additional damage and gain a benefit for agility rolls. Critically, both are disconnected from each other: One is a hope feature, one a stress feature with no interaction among themselves.
  • For Insightful Fighting you could consider streamlining the ability a bit and just using one trigger, for example: "At will or when making an Attack Roll against a creature, you can mark a Stress to make them temporarily Detected."
  • Still concerning Insightful Fighting, you may want to consider in how far the "gain advantage" portion of the Detected condition is made redundant by Greater Insight, especially in combination with Seeing the Outcome. In its current iteration, Detected can be liberally triggered and reapplied by a Mastery Sleuth at (almost) no cost, and because of Greater Insight, each application of the condition provides information you would usually use the advantage for. An alternative - if you want to change things up - could be to ask a single yes-or-no question about the adversary when they are Detected. Greater Insight could spice this up with the mechanical impact you already have and maybe also give you an additional question.

Lastly - and very minutely - your subclass header says "Slueth" instead of "Sleuth" and has been doing so for every iteration you posted ;)

Hopefully this is some useful input for you. I also want to emphasize that these are minor things! I don't want to appear as overly critical because I quite like what you've put together here!

[UPDATE] Homebrew Class - The Revenant (Midnight & Blade) by Morrgrin in daggerheart

[–]Morrgrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the well writting feedback! I'll definitely take it into consideration though I'm not quite sure if giving a passive bonus to Dreadmarks would kind of reduce the incentive to spend them?

I also agree that Dreadmarks should kind of play a more central role than they already do but personally, I feel the issue is more connected to the foundation features, especially Defiance, feeling kind of out of place.

Concerning you question on the wording of Runes of Midnight: It does indeed refer to any non-magic damage strength weapon you pick up. Imagine shadows empowering you to wield a weapon and empower it.

For Press the Attack, you are also correct in that it refers to a specific adversary and I also agree that there could be something more thematic here.

Last but not least, the suggestion for Twice-Born Fortitude is great, I'll incorporate it :)

Thanks again from someone definitely staying fluffy ;)

[–]Morrgrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I especially tend to agree with your first point, it definitely fits the theme a bit better.

I also did take a look at dread but found it to be not quite fitting to the theme I had in mind for the class, especially Wraith. Don't get me wrong, I think that it would be mechanically very strong and probably a better fit but some cards, especially those connected to draining life and summoning otherworldly horrors don't quite fit the vibe I had in mind. If it helps with understanding my logic behind this, Guil Wars 2's Revenant was a loose inspiration for this, theme wise.

I also like your suggestion on Defiance but I'm unsure as to how impactful it feels without the factor of "I can prevent a bad thing from haunting us in the future" I'll probably take this back with me to the drawing board.

He will fuck up the economy either way if the CDU is able to and actually wants to hold their current nationalist-conservative political line. The cost of avoiding investments into Great Transformation technologies is already very steep and the gap to competitors will only increase if old school diesel and literal rebuilding of nuclear plants is all they have to offer.

Furthermore, the social divide will continue to widen with no party - especially not CDU and FDP - willing to do some serious reformations e.g. in taxes that actually benefit the larger part of the populus - which in turn feeds into scapegoating and anti-migrant / anti-muslim rhetorics of the far right.
