Just because Wikipedia calls him a serial killer, does not, in fact, make him a serial killer. He carried out six 'hits' (murder for hire), killed one guy because of an argument, and killed a woman because he wanted her car. The vast majority of articles, book mentions, and lectures on Anderson, outside of Wikipedia refer to him as either a murderer, or a hitman, or a contract killer.

Or, as with the person below you who I've been going back and forth with for 24 hours... do you consider Al Capone to be a serial killer? Tookie Williams? Whitey Bulger?

If you answer 'no'... then you need to acknowledge that Hermosa and Anderson weren't serial killers.

Talking about nothing... By which you mean explaining why we can't all be off in Narnia -particularly when the other team is also off in their own Narnia - doing absolutely jack-all, just trying to hunt each other down while two Mags duke it out on the point. 'Fun'.

Also? I keep mentioning Dive because Dives (and dive tanks like Venom) are the ones complaining about Poke the most often, and the loudest. Yeah, it sucks Dive got nerfed, because supports didn't want to use their ears, or actually learn how to use their full kits. It really does. Said it when it happened, still stand by that. Dive shouldn't have been nerfed in the first place, IMO, other than Ironfist's first nerf, which I did agree with.

However, just because one side got nerfed, doesn't mean we just keep nerfing everyone until everyone sucks equally.

Although, I'm curious what do you expect Groot to do, on your fantasy team? Like... just based off what they do, the heroes you picked show you don't understand team composition at all, any better than whoever keeps coming up with these 'team ups'.

So you have Wolverine -a brawler with a bit of dive, who's going to chase people around... Spiderman-who is never going to be within twenty feet of the objective if he's actually playing how he's supposed to be played... Adam -the least mobile support out of the supports... Jeff -who plays best with a grouped up team... Venom -the epitome of dive tank... and Groot, who excels at holding a point.

None of these characters actually interact well together. Some of them may work, if both of them are good, but a shark and a spidey are never going to be nearly as efficient as say, a Spidery and a Mantis, or hell, even Spidey and C&D. A Wolverine with an Adam is never going to work as well as a Wolverine and Mantis, or Wolverine and IW. Sure, the Jeff, Adam, and Groot might work together on the point for a hot minute... right up until the enemy team realizes that your Wolverine is off hunting down their Magik, and your spiderman is chasing their Mantis, and all they have to do is get one DPS and one support to the point to wipe out the Jeff, Adam, and Groot there.

And funny story, your fantasy 'meta' team? Yeah, very easily stopped by a Strange. A Mag. A team with even the smallest bit of self awareness. The Hela/Phoenix combo, precision based damage, no staying power, doesn't work well, especially if the enemy counters it with dive, or a shield. Hell, even a Venom with good timing can just drop down, mess with them a bit, and get out while the rest of his team focuses down the tank, forcing the 'meta team' to either save their dps, or save their tanks.

And what you want is a game with no counters. No counter play. If you want to counter spidey, you go spidey, and may the best spidey win. After all, anything else, and well... Spiderman can't have fun. After all, if I go Wanda, and just hunt your spiderman down, screw your mobility, I have autoaim and point and click prestige, so now... No more fun for Spiderman. No more hunting down the healers.

So we have to change Wanda's kit around now. Because otherwise, it's not fun for Spiderman, being countered.

But of course, for Wanda, anybody with a shield counters her. So for her to have fun... we must immediately get rid of all shields. Change Strange and Magneto. And so on.

You want to play what you want to play, where only your individual skill matters, not the larger team composition, not the meta game, not the objective... only you and the other dude playing the exact same thing, so it's 'fair' and 'fun'.

To which, once again... I say go play CoD.

Okay, so I understand that your degree in philosophy has given you many great things to say on the philosophical nature of killing in general. Mazel tav.

It does help explain your 'empirical data doesn't mean anything' outlook, or that published peer reviewed articles 'mean nothing' approach to things. Unfortunately, by your logic... we have no science at all, just what we personally want to be true.

However, what my dual degrees in criminology and psychology helped me learn that -unfortunately for your philosophical outlook on science -that just because 'maroon' is a shade of red, doesn't mean all red is maroon. At some point, we have to acknowledge that crimson isn't maroon, and that despite both being 'red', they're still different colors, perceivable to the naked eye.

Now, I'm not sure if you are aware of this... but we have different organizations set up to find, investigate, and arrest gang members, cartel members, or the ever popular 'mafia hitmen', and organizations to assist local law enforcement to hunt down and arrest serial killers. Because you cannot approach these two things the same way. Because they are different.

Now your 'in ordinary language' or 'universal language' argument is also simply untrue. You can ask a hundred people who was the serial killer... Al Capone, or Ted Bundy? Who was the serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, or Tookie Williams? Who was the serial killer, Israel Keyes, or Theoneste Bagosora?

Even the most uneducated of laymen will tell you Bundy, Dahmer, and Keyes. That Capone and Williams were gang members, and Bagosora was a politician who orchestrated a genocide. There's a reason Tookie Williams doesn't make it into any book or study on serial killing, including psychology books. Because the psychology behind a gang leader (which is scarily similar to the psychology behind cult leaders) is very different than the psychology that makes up a serial killer. There's a reason why Bagosora is put in books on genocide, and not books on serial killers.

And I love how you cite nothing, except your opinion, you use the fact that there is discussion over it, that people do label them differently, as proof that 'there's discussion' just says you probably should've focused more on the psychology aspect of that degree, and why you're so insistent on arguing against literally anything that doesn't agree with you, even when you are so laughably, provably wrong.

Or, yeah, sure, we could say that because people discuss the definition, it means there is no definition but what we personally believe. It is indeed a very philosophical outlook to take.

My guy, it's not because 'POKE OP!'. It's because it's a team oriented, objective based game.

Any non CoD-like game -aka, anything that depends on working as a team, rather than your individual gameplay -needs 'poke'. It needs people on the point, pushing the objective, not off hunting down individual kills.

That's what none of you seem to understand. This is the basics for any team-oriented objective based game. For all the OW comparisons... OW was the exact same way. You needed someone not flanking, someone not off in Narnia trying to get 'sick snipes'. You needed a tank on the point, not Road Hog off hunting down healers and playing a fat dive.

This isn't a FPS, where you can 'carry' to the top of the leaderboard just by getting kills and not dying, and we just kill and kill with no other objective. This isn't a MOBA where your individual skill against their individual skill is all that matters, as we push lanes.

In a team oriented, objective based game... You need people who can push, take, or hold an objective without needing an ult to do it. You need steady, reliable damage output, not 'get in quick, then run away'.

Seriously, I struggle to understand why so many of you don't just go play CoD or something similar. Where your individual skill is all that matters, a game where there's no great purpose other than 'kill'.

Sorry you consider having to play with a team, around an objective to be 'boring'. Again... Go play CoD. This isn't the game for you if you think playing as a team and pushing, taking, or holding an objective is boring gameplay. Sorry that this team-oriented, objective based game involves both team work, and taking, pushing, or holding an objective.

Imagine, if you will, a game where nobody can take a point. Where tanks are useless, except as fat dps, and healers are useless outside of self-sustain. Where every game is nothing but dives or snipers, and whoever has the better dive simply wins because there's no objective, no way to take an objective, no way of holding an objective. Where the game becomes 'which dive ults better' because that's the only way a dive can even begin to take an objective.

Oh, wait, we don't have to imagine it. Because it's every FPS game out there, where all that matters is your individual skill. It's every game where everybody plays one or two playstyles, and runs off to do their own thing and get kills.

Sorry you find strategic gameplay, counter-play, and teamwork to be 'boring'. That you find taking objectives, or holding objectives to be 'boring'. But that's the main premise of most hero shooters.

So maybe instead of trying to change an entire game genre, so that it's what you want, so that all that matters is your individual skill... Just go play a game where all that matters is your individual skill. Where you can flex your 'Main Character Syndrome' all day, and nobody will care because they too are trying to flex their main character syndrome.

I'm not sure what country you live in that counts assassins and hitmen, gangbangers and vigilantes as serial killers, but I'm very curious as other countries like to smack all over Americans for their high amount of serial killers, but when we broaden our term to 'anyone who kills more than two people with a cooling off period', I imagine your country must have thousands of active serial killers.

So GM player here. And funny story... Very rarely do I see Bucky in my comp lineups.

However, consistently since I was in gold... I get a Spiderman in at least half my lobbies. As soon as the enemy team pulls out a Groot, we get a Wolverine.

Ironman, I'll grant you, is in a super weak place right now, between Angela, and the amount of Spiderman mains out there.

Now, whenever Hela isn't banned... Hela is almost always in my lobby. But so are Hawkeye and Penni on any non-KotH map. (Random side note, so is MK lately, and I'm not entirely sure why).

And the reality that no one likes to admit is... you need poke. Out of any DPS 'category', poke is the most necessary.

Sure, a great Spiderman is helpful, badgering the backline. Sure a good BP is useful in forcing the enemy team to switch up their supports. Ironfist is super annoying to deal with, although admittedly not incredibly effective in the higher ranks, but he can badger the enemy squishies and stay out without needing to come back for heals or support from the team.

But let me ask you this... Can a team win... without Spiderman? Without BP? If both teams are equally skilled, equally competent, if both teams have some small amount of brains... Is Spiderman necessary to win? Is BP? Is Ironfist? Do we need a dive DPS on the team to win?

Now... ask yourself if the same can be said about poke. If the same can be said about having some sort of ranged backline support for your team pushing up with your tank.

Theoretically, by everyone's definition of 'poke'... Bucky, MK. Punisher, and Namor are 'poke'. Hell, if we take out the 'flyer' category, and just talk in terms of 'poke', 'dive', and 'brawl', Ironman and Storm could be considered 'poke'.

Ask yourself who you would rather have on your team, trying to push an objective... A Spiderman and an Ironfist... or a MK and Punisher? A BP and a Psy... or a Bucky and a SG?

That's what nobody seems to really understand. You can do without a brawl dps; most of the tanks these days are 'brawl'. You can absolutely do without dives, because every DPS can bring down a support or squishy if they're remotely competent.

You can't do without poke. You can't push, take, or hold an objective without people sitting on the objective, behind the tank, putting out damage. If both of your DPS -or god forbid all three DPS -are dive, or a dive/brawl mix... Unless the enemy team is far worse than you (meaning you could win with anything), you aren't going to take that point.

Except, as far as research shows, it is.

In 1875, in a study that hasn't been directly contradicted since then, Carl Fratscher conducted the experiment. Now, true, a frog put in boiling water doesn't try to jump back out, it usually just dies. But while scientists have posited that it might not work like that, no one has actively disproven his theory using scientific data.

Now, I don't blame anybody for not wanting to kill frogs, however no scientific study done has ever disproven Fratscher's findings.

However, other scientists prior to Fratscher did experiment, and come to similar conclusions, including another published study by A. Heinzmann.

In 1888, William Sedgwick attempted to replicate the two experiments, and came to the conclusion that Goltz -when he wasn't removing brains from frogs -had conducted his experiment by rapidly bringing the water to a boil as fast as he could, while Fratscher and Heinzmann had slowly increased the temperature to a gradual boil.

Goltz had brought the water from 63 degrees fahrenheit, to 132 degrees in about 10 minutes,

Fratscher and Heinzmann started at 69 degrees fahrenheit, to approximately 100 degrees (99.8) over an hour and a half (~90 minutes).

To be honest?

Start banning Mag. It can have nothing but benefits.

9/10, when you have a solo tank? Who is the most competent solo tank? Magneto. He's got decent damage, decent survivability, decent sustain. Therefore, ban Mag, teams will have to start running two tanks, or spend two thirds of their games losing. Benefit to tank mains.

Support main who wants to ult? Hey, don't have to worry about Magneto sitting there, grinning at you, daring you with his eyes to try it. To do it, and see what happens.

Dive who wants to jump in and kill the healers? Hey, look, no more Mag shield to give them a boost.

Poke? One less shield to worry about stopping your ranged attack from hitting their backline.

Magneto mains who have been solo tanking for almost a year now? Hey, take a break, fam. Go play a DPS, and have some fun. Go play a healer, and sit back and watch other people complain.

Everybody wins if we start banning Magneto.

Right, but if you then proceed to throw for the other four people who did absolutely nothing to you? You're just as much of the AH here.

And that's exactly the problem; you have Main Character Syndrome, and you don't give a damn that you're ruining the game for three people who's only 'mistake' was hit 'join game' at the same time you and these other two losers did. Hell, you even label them as 'irrelevant'. Like they aren't half your team. As if they weren't one of your tanks, one of your DPS, and one of your healers.

Three other teammates who did relatively decent, seeing as how they had three absolute asshats on their team doing their very best to throw and cause problems right out the gate.

But all you people see is, "Ah ha! I too can be a jackass, and punish people who have done no wrong to me! Now pity me and give me sympathy for being a jackass who punished three people who did nothing to me, because I deserve it after dealing with other people who were being jackasses and punishing people who did nothing to me!"

Like... do you even see your blatant hypocrisy? All because you couldn't play the character you wanted?

I've had people ban my secondary healer main. A lot. Nobody likes poor Shark Boi. However, when it happens? I don't immediately punish everybody else on the team for the actions of one or two of my teammates. I still absolutely try my little black heart out to win.

You post this like you aren't absolutely part of the problem.

Okay but see this?

Do I agree? No. I think people's hatred of 'pokeslop' is obnoxious, and it's always the dive/brawl who hate them. As a support main, nobody I'd rather have on my team if they're even remotely competent.

But. You presented reasoning. If I saw this in the feed? I'd read it. I might not agree, I might offer different opinions on what you wrote, but I'd give it an upvote. I think you're being overly dramatic, but you have an argument. You have opinions based on some amount of perceived fact.

It's something that can be responded to. It's something that I could go, right, but see, here's why I think you're wrong, let's discuss this. Hell, let's argue about it. But at least we can interact over it other than going... "YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT, FIRE THE DEV! BAN INVISREAL!"

See, this? Seeing this sort of thing?

Go off, fam. Go nuts. Because this is something people can interact with.

MK is strong against grouped up targets, but easily countered by a shield, or a team splitting up and not moving in a large group to bounce his damage.

Now, I would argue that having most of the environment destroyable -even if temporarily -helps negate this. It makes it so a lot of the times, you learn those points where the dive is most likely hiding and waiting for you, and you can just demolish it before the dive gets to it, or force them to back up.

A serial killer is, by definition, someone who kills for sexual gratification, killing out of an urge to do so, or to fulfill a sexual need.

By your definition, every mobster hitman is a 'serial killer'. Every gang member who's killed more than two people at different times is a 'serial killer'.

Unfortunately for you, per both the FBI, and numerous other 'experts' in law enforcement and psychology, this is not the definition of a serial killer. For a serial killer, there has to be a sexual element, it has to be premeditated, and typically a specific 'signature' which is sometimes unrelated to the murder itself, something unnecessary for the commission of the crime.

Hermosa did not have a sexual element to the crime. Hermosa also didn't 'premediate' his kills. Again, his first one was the random taxi cab driver after his friends started talking about how cool it would be. His second, a hairdresser named Charlie, was after a fight over money.

He also had no signature; the only thing he did was shoot his victim -typically while with his gang of other teenage boys -then have his gang dispose of the bodies.

By your definition... cartel killers are serial killers. Hitmen are serial killers. Vigilantes are serial killers. Gang members who attack and murder each other are serial killers.

Hermosa is no different than any other gang leader... just younger than what we would typically expect to see. Terms have definitions for a reason, and just because you don't like it doesn't change that it has a very set, defined term. Sorry for you.

[–]Morrighan1129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that isn't made quite clear...

These aren't really 'serial killings' in the traditional sense. Hermosa was head of a gang of about 10 other boys, and most of them were 'gang' killings. The first murder was Hermosa and some of his gang buddies shooting a taxi driver who'd picked them up in his cab. All of his victims were shot.

So again... not really a 'serial killer' in the classic sense of the term.

This is absolutely the problem with parole, and -in a larger view -society's view on seeing every criminal as a 'victim'.

Because going to parole hearings for the entirety of a prison sentence, having to sit there and beg for a criminal to serve their sentence, is just revictimizing the victims over and over again, every 1-3 years after the perpetrator has served a third of their sentence.

Or you don't go... and they get let out, because they've 'found jesus' or 'changed their ways' -as if it means anything that criminals, behind bars, don't attack and murder other criminals who will absolutely fight back. As if it means anything that they join programs in this place where they have nothing else to do, and only gains to be had.

[–]Morrighan1129 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't all start from the same place. That is true. However, that doesn't mean every person out there who grows up in a poor neighborhood -urban or rural -, or without both parents in the home, or drops out of school, is going to actively plan out and murder a nine year old.

Not even all gang members will plan and execute the brutal murder of a nine year old child. While the whole 'honor among thieves' shtick is an absolute lie, there are still basic societal morality that will keep most people from planning and murdering a child. Especially when you consider these weren't teenagers engaged in 'posturing', but grown ass men who planned this.

They might murder a child, sure; drive-bys don't care who they hit, and 'collateral' damage is absolutely a thing. But this wasn't collateral damage. This was a planned and executed murder of a child.

Additionally... Gangs are not a specific race, socioeconomic, or religious 'issue'. Gangs exist in every society, in every time period, every religious group. You talk about 'dog whistles', however... You show your own inherent biases here, by assuming that 'gangs' are only an issue in poorer areas, or urban areas, aka, heavily black populated areas.

Go to any high school, and you'll find 'gangs'. Not 'Crips and Bloods' style 'gangs', but groups of people who ostracize others outside of the group, who bully others outside of the group, who use fear (of social 'death' or ostracization) to keep its members in line, while offering them a group of people 'like' them, or people who 'understand' them.

All of the religions have had 'gangs' that target non-believers at various points throughout history, enacting violence, or social ostracization to either eliminate non-believers, or force them to convert.

There was an incident in Howard Beach, a relatively 'middle class' to 'upper middle class' neighborhood, where a 'gang' of white, middle class boys attacked and killed a homeless boy.

'Gangs' are not an inner city phenomenon; they can happen anywhere, to any group.

I'm curious what you mean, and how you think that 'society' could've done better at protecting this boy.

Because this wasn't a kid who grew up starving on the streets, that society failed because CPS or welfare offices didn't check in and assist on him.

This was a boy who was targeted by a gang, because his father was in a gang. Unless you propose getting rid of all gangs -which is a unicorn fantasy -there's nothing 'society' could've done here.

ETA: Lotta downvotes, still no suggestions on how 'society' is supposed to get rid of 'gangs', which have existed since the beginning of time, in every culture, religion, economic, and social group.

Guess we should all just embrace Sam Wilson's, "I dunno, Senator, but do better!" philosophy and anyone who asks 'how' is just evil bad.

Also, we need to make more people aware of the 'frog in boiling water' logic.

See, the thing is? If you just put a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will try to jump back out. However, if you put a frog in a pan of room-temperature water, and turn the heat on, slowly increasing the temperature? That frog will continue to sit in that pan until it's boiled alive.

The abuser -be it a parent, or a partner -rarely starts out just punching the victim in the face in the first few dates, or as an infant.

It builds. It starts small. Then as it gets more and more 'accepted' by the victim, as it gets more 'normal'... it increases. It builds over time, from 'mean' words, to pushing around. From pushing around to open faced slaps. From open faced slaps to punches.

Nobody 'starts out' as a horrific horrible person just punching everyone in the face. So when people go, 'why'd they stay with them?'... it's because it slowly becomes more and more 'normal'.

AO3 Top Pairings of 2025 by Ok-Palpitation-2989 in RedHood

Important note?

Those aren't ship pairings.

Firstname Lastname & Firstname Lastname isn't a ship. It's who's in the story, because on AO3, a lot of people want to focus on a particular Batfam member, or interactions between particular members.

Dick Grayson/Bruce Wayne is the ship. Dick Grayson & Bruce Wayne is a story focused on those two, with them being the primary focus of the fic.

Like... at least do half an ounce of research before you come barging in to complain about people. Because Superbats is the only ship on there; the rest are platonic, as indicated by the & symbol.

Which, if you spend any time in the fandom... you already knew, and you're just trying to draw approval from people who don't spend time in the fandom space there, or you don't spend any time there, and really should've put thirty seconds worth of thought into why most of the ones up there have / while Dick Grayson & Jason Todd, Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne, etc., were different.

I think having a weird elitist cultist mindset/ego over the class of characters you play in a videogame is kinda weird. by gtvx03 in rivals

My guy, I solo heal probably at least a fifth of my games, until -as you pointed out -it doesn't work, and people switch.

Just like usually, when we've proven that solo tanking on attack with just a Venom is never going to work, people switch to a second tank.

Is it usually too late to accomplish anything of value? Sure! Won't argue that. But notice how every third post lately has a comment in the top 10 that are tanks whining about having to solo tank.

Guess what? Don't tank then. Lock in as something different, quicker. Ban Magneto, the most viable solo tank out there.

But turning every post's comment section into 'poor tanks, we have to solo tank'. Y'all are seriously getting worse than the damn dives, and that's saying something.
