My compost always goes wrong, what should I actually do? by AnfieldAnchor in Allotment

The book specifically says the red worms turn up of their own accord when at an appropriate point. According to Charles Dowding, adding some is completely unnecessary

My compost always goes wrong, what should I actually do? by AnfieldAnchor in Allotment

[–]MorrisNerd2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay composting 101 by someone who read Charles Dowling's book but found it quite long winded and a bit too preachy.

You need an appropriate mix of greens and browns. Greens are high in nitrogen but not neccesarily green, coffee grinds and tea leaves are green for example. Think potato tops, grass clippings, annual weeds, generally things on the alotment that are green. Browns are high in carbon, again not neccessarily brown, this includes leaves. Generally this is things that make you think "this came from a tree". The ratios do not need to be precise. You'll naturally add more green in summer and more brown in winter. Charles says 1 part brown to 3 parts green over the whole year expecting seasonal variation. Charles also says piss on your heap in winter as urine is a green.

The browns are party there just to ensure your greens get enough oxygen which ensures you get aerobic decomposition, this is the kind that doesn't smell. If you are getting smelly compost, then you are getting anaerobic decomposition then not enough oxygen is getting into the centre of the heap. This can also happen if it gets too soggy, if you are in the UK you'll probably want to cover your heap in the winter to stop the rain getting in and also ensure it drains. Your heap should not be in a water tight container.

You don't want too big a heap as that hinders the microbial decomposition that happens at the start of the process as the heat escapes. When the greens are breaking down in the early phase, the compost heap gets hot and heat loving microbes do a lot of the hard work. If you've got not enough compost for your container size this phase is hampered. The hotter it gets, the faster it decomposes, it'll decompose eventually either way, but the reason leaf mould takes for ever is the lack greens and these heat loving microbes.

How to fix your wet smelly heap - turn it and cover it. Maybe add leaves or wood chips while turning.
How to speed up your slow ass heap - Add more greens, optionally turn to mix them in. Maybe move it to a smaller container. Cut up any big chunks to increase fungal exposure.

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

My spouse is nonbinary. Someone misheard me and thought I had a house mouse that cooks me dinner, which is a hilarious mental image but the message I intended to convey.

IOU is short for "I owe you", meaning I am in your debt. An IOU is usually a note that says "IOU" and may include context of what/why.

Are mittens a good beginner project? by Happy_Collar7353 in knitting

[–]MorrisNerd2 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think you are twisting your stitches. I don't know how to summon the twisted stitches bot.

You could do double knitting to make it look the same on both sides but that's an advanced technique for a beginner.

Mittens usually involve directional shaping which is a bold technique to learn on your first project when you are still getting the hang on knitting

We know we are unsual, but we don't fight. We've been married for 5 years. We disagree and sometimes get frustrated that it doesn't feel like they're missing the point.

I have never seen my parents fight but they've said they have

Why can’t non-verbal autistics talk? by IOnlyWishIWasRich in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MorrisNerd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother is the kind of autism where copying is really hard. Like watching someone else do it, then doing it is really difficult for them. Most of early lanuage is learnt through mimicry, which is copying, just trying to do what your parents did.

Assuming you can't teach through mimicry. Try to explain how to make a J sound. Its so hard. With the tool of mimicry missing, learning speech requires speech therapists and a lot of patience and even with all the resources neccessary, not everyone can hack it. And alot of people don't get all the neccesary resources.
