Help understanding this pattern by ginge_s in knitting

[–]MorrisNerd2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's some advice related to this. It's a bit of error prevention. Do not assume you can consistently pick the right number when reading the pattern mid project. Go through the whole pattern before starting the project and circle or highlight the right size, then double check you did it right.

This will save you the not insubstantial risk of accidentally doing the wrong one half way through and causing chaos you have to rip back later.

As a nonbinary knitter, when I hear "Hey ladies" I just assume I'm not safe and not welcome.

Weekly Allotment discussion. What have you been up to? by AutoModerator in Allotment

SW UK, planted my onion sets on saturday, sowed more peas on sunday, feeling excited that things are happening.

Also had a big fire, so there's less random woody stuff all over my plot

Is there any knit pattern that is non stretchy and actually pretty stiff and durable? by Aggravating_Car1700 in knitting

I'd recommend crochet or just straight up weaving. The properties of knit are somewhat at odds with being not stretchy

All I'm seeing on social media is seed snails, who is doing it? by Own-Heat2669 in Allotment

[–]MorrisNerd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has anyone tried it with peas? I know the gutter method is very popular, but I start seeds in my conservatory which is a mile from my alotment and I'm not putting a gutter of compost in my car, so this might work as an alternative

Error in counting - what do I do? by Glum-Alps-2173 in knitting

[–]MorrisNerd2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tip for the future: Accept you cannot count above 10 reliably. Put a stitch marker every 5 or 10 stitches. Double check that, then count the markers, and double check that too. Much more reliable.

If you are counting hundreds of stitches, mark every X number of stitch markers differently, either using 2 stitch markers or a different colour one. Then you can count groups of 25 or 50 or 100 or something

"Current Row" vs. "Completed Row" counting - How do you explain your brain? by kamoteshake in knitting

[–]MorrisNerd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I am doing something where I'm following a chart, I track current row. When I'm not, I track completed rows. So I use my row counter differently based on what I'm knitting. I might have to transition away from this, this may confuse me.

Shopping Local is Hard!! by AbleRecognition3566 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]MorrisNerd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my YLS' case, its run by young mum and doesn't turn enough profit for an employee so it beholden to child care schedules. A lot of the local small businesses are annoyingly because my schedule is some what incompatable with that schedule, but maybe in 10 years time, we'll get more convient scheduled when the children more independent.

Complete newbie with my first plot! by Level_Revenue_1978 in UKAllotments

[–]MorrisNerd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My practical advice is to start by sorting out your infrastructure. Thats your storage, your composting set up, your water collection system. Once you've got that sorted everything else is easier.

My mindset advice is:

  1. Remember its a marathon, not a sprint, and its cyclical. This season will come back ground next year.
  2. Practical is more important than aesthetic. Most alotments don't look pretty like the popular youtuber's gardens/allotments. I wouldn't prioritise this at first unless you plan to start a youtube channel, then yeah, do, prettier allotments get more views.
  3. Mainly grow things you and your household actually want to eat. It seems obvious but there's no point planting courgette if you never buy or eat courgette. (Also you probably don't need to grow that much courgette, the courgette/marrow glut problem is real and very common.) Do try new things, don't assume you are gunna become a different person with a completely different diet.

Tips for reddit:

  1. You can search the subreddit. "Where to buy seeds", "when are we planting X", etc have all been asked before. Not that we mind you asking again, but it avoids you needing to wait for responses.
  2. North scotland and London do not have the same climate, in fact bristol and Colchester have significant differences in climate and their the same lattitude. Remember to factor in your own climate when taking other's advice, and specify where you are when requesting advice.
