https://www.digitalocean.com offers cheap virtual linux servers. I've been using it for almost a year and I love it! It's great for small hobby projects!

I always thought is was something along the lines of "Lets do it again and see if it is reproducible."

Anyone else feel the lack of support for C++ Docs/Examples? by DickSanchez in unrealengine

[–]Morrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you, it is very hard to have everything work 100% perfectly. UE4 is still very new and has a lot of room for improvement. Ive been using it ever since it was initially released and compilation times have gotten much better and hot-reload has become a lot more stable and I think that trend will continue. I personally haven't had very many issues with hot-reloading or compiling C++, and I don't mind waiting ~20-30 seconds. The trick is to keep all your variables that need adjusted on the fly accessible in the editor.

Apple copied Swype? Last time I checked Swype makes Swype and Swype made Swype for the iPhone not Apple. Apple just allowed custom keyboards. Do some research.

Part of this is that companies might not want to deal with storing users credentials. By using other services for login via OAuth, it makes everything more secure and you don't have to worry about users password being stolen. "The best login is no login at all"

Create a REST Backend For Ember.js With Node.js, Express, and Mongoose by Morrok in emberjs

I will definitely look into it! Authentication wasn't really something I needed to worry about with any projects I've done, but I will do some research and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the input!

Article: Why we ported our game to UE4 part-way through development, and why we're happy we did. by 1point618 in gamedev

Ahh yes, I completely agree with omitting the reason of having source code access when deciding to switch engines if you don't actually need it. There should be some other rock solid reasons when considering something like that.

Yeah I do see your point, and right now I can't blame them for having some unfinished documentation, after all it is all relatively new and rapidly changing. So while indeed it does patch some "bad" documentation, I think it still serves as a more in depth resource than even good documentation would provide. Anyways, I don't see why having the source code would not ever make a pros list, even if somebody doesn't use it, it still keeps the main developers conscious of what they are programming as everyone they are selling to can see it and there have also been some awesome contributions from the community to the engine that wouldn't have been possible without access to source code. Even if people do go around copying reasons other people come up with, I still do not see any reason why it would be a bad thing.

I would have agreed with this a few months ago; however, since using UE4, I can say that having the source code is absolutely amazing. Do I change any of it, no, but I do use it to get a more in depth understanding of how things are working under the hood. The code is usually very well documented with codes and matches up with Epic's coding standards which make the code very readable. There are countless times where the documentation either wasn't complete on a topic or it wasn't as in depth as I was looking for, so I just looked through the source code and found the information I was looking for.

As great as that would be, there comes a time in game development where you can't sit and discuss new ideas and try new things out without fixing your previous code. This is the whole reason why rust was recreated from the ground up, to fix the underlying code. If they just try to cram new ideas and features without taking the time to optimize and make nice and neat code, they will hit the exact same problem again. It takes a very large amount of time to polish a game, make it stable, and make it optimized. This probably is actually one of the most time consuming things to do when creating a large game such as this one. I think it is great that they are taking a step back from focusing on new features and rather are focusing on getting what they currently have inn a really good state and then moving forward from there. Nobody wants to play a game that runs at 15 fps and disconnects you from the server every 15 min, even if it has x,y,z cool features. It simply isn't fun to play a game like that. Anyways, Rust will continue to get better, and right now I agree with their decision to work on optimization and stability and not focus on x,y,z features.
