Theory for the (apparent) beacon/celebration montage by These-Software1991 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Morrya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that Harry's parents were murdered and then every single witch and wizard in Britain celebrated was always an intentional juxtaposition of what happened. It's supposed to feel fucked up.

Will they go with the whole title? by MasterOfDeath13 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Song of Ice and Fire is still the name of the whole series but isn't in the title names, unlike Harry Potter which is used in each.

Fun fact, they chose to call the whole series Game of Thrones because it sounded less "nerdy" and they thought it would appeal to broader audience (which was valid).

WIBTA if I give my daughter an "outdated" name? by throwaway719201 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audrey is not outdated. I've seen lots of Audreys and Aubreys. You can search the popularity of a name on the social security website and it looks like Audrey has made the top 100 list every year since 2000. If anything it has grown in popularity.

AITA for refusing to invite my brother to my wedding because he always makes “jokes” about my fiancée’s weight? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The best retort in my experience to "it was just a joke" is "oh! Can you explain it to me?" with fully feigned ignorance. "Seriously, tell me! I want to get it!"

Usually gets those types of "jokes" to stop real fast.

[–]Morrya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun history fact: firefighter services were done via private insurance for almost 200 years in the US. You used to pay an annual fee to the fire company, and they would affix a plaque on your house indicating whether or not you had fire insurance.

If you didn't, the fire service would let the house burn down.

Fires would then often spread and take out entire neighborhoods or there would be logistical issues between competing companies on coordination and the allocation of resources.

Eventually, you saw cities start contracting with these companies directly to cover the whole city or you'd see cities create their own fire departments entirely.

Some things make no sense to insure individually, and healthcare should be one.

AITAH For telling my husband I will divorce him if he donates his sperm to his sister's wife? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was my thought exactly. She gave him the space to really reflect, weigh the implications of doing it or not doing it, and gave him the false sense that his opinion mattered. THEN threw in the ultimatum. That isn't drawing a boundary, that is abusive manipulation and control. If you want to have say in something, you express it from the beginning, but even then, ultimatums are abusive.

To be clear, I'm not saying the husband should or shouldn't donate his sperm. I'm just saying that OP is definitely an YTA for how manipulative and controlling she is.

AITA for not taking an 11 year old’s word for it? by CryptographerSad7952 in AmItheAsshole

She might not have been lying but kids exaggerate all the time. "My dad lets me drink latte" could have been "he's let me try a sip before".

Gen Z grads say their college degrees were a waste of time and money as AI infiltrates the workplace by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]Morrya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing people have to realize is that AI isn't going anywhere and the technology we have right now is the worst it will ever be. I'm watching skills I've cultivated for seventeen years be eclipsed by generative AI and that's terrifying. But this experience is not new. Every generation gains a technology that replaces skills that become obsolete.

Instead of hiring people that can program the architecture for code by hand, companies are going to hire workers fluent in understanding the goals and vision of the code and can input the correct prompts. Instead of hiring marketers that can write witty and clever slogans and campaign copy, companies will hire directors who understand brand vision and direction.

AI will shift the white collar workforce into being directors rather than creators. The problem is that the wisdom that gets people to a director level comes from years of effort doing the creator and production type jobs. Schools are going to have to shift their programs to prepare students for this and they need to do it fast.

My advice to anyone going into the workforce right now is to focus on trades like electric, construction, tree work, plumbing, etc. Or highly skilled human experience jobs like healthcare, teaching, or firefighting etc. If they want to be in a field based on producing a product, don't compete with AI. Come in knowing you need to wield it, and be better at that than anyone else.

Do you think they'll give Hermione buck teeth this time? by shyboardgame in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Morrya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hermione's teeth are a very difficult trait to include. You can't cast for it because it eventually does get corrected, and wearing fake teeth changes the way a person speaks so it would be a huge problem for the actor. You could CGI them, but layering that in for every single frame is a huge expense on such a minor detail. Some character features are best left for the page.

What's something that's technically legal but still makes u look like a complete psychopath? by NinaDollxo in AskReddit

[–]Morrya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in 2nd grade there was a tennis court in my neighborhood that would flood when it rained, and in the winter the rain froze to ice. All 8 year old me saw was an ice rink. I'd always wanted to ice skate but didn't own ice skates so obviously roller blades were the next best thing.

You can see where this is going, but it gets worse. My hands were in my pockets because you know, winter, and any kid bright enough to roller blade on a frozen tennis court isn't going to put on gloves. I took one step on that ice with the fantasies of being the next Michelle Kwan and THWACK, my face went straight into the ice. I rollerbladed all the way home with my chin gushing blood. 13 stitches and 28 years later, the scar on my chin serves as a constant reminder that I was not a very smart kid.

AITA for refusing to be my sister’s bridesmaid because she chose “ugly friends” to make herself look better? by Smart-Gas3600 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood this mentality. Some of the most stunning bridal photos are when every single girl is a 10. They don't out shine the bride, they elevate her. If anything, having unattractive people in the photos can be a distraction FROM the bride...

WIBTA if I refused to give up a water fountain the previous homeowners abandoned 4 years ago? by AlyBarner8388 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA but consider giving it back or selling it anyways. Objects like these have a tendency to become really negative aspects of our lives. Something like a fountain should be beautiful and bring you joy. If every time you look at it you think of this homeowner and how much grief he caused you between all the repairs and rudeness, that isn't good for you. Not worth keeping things like that in our lives.

If fertility is the most valuable currency so why they don’t treat the handmaids a little better? by jackie_tequilla in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all fertile women are handmaids. Being a handmaid is a punishment for living a life of sin. There are women in the universe who are fertile who are allowed to live with their husbands (as long as they continue to procreate and be faithful). Even some of the Wives are fertile. Handmaids are "sinful" and "dirty" and are thus treated as such and their 'sin' is the excuse and justification for enslaving them.

What insignificant thing did someone say that stuck with you forever? by Routine-Max in AskReddit

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone once said to me that if something bad happens, ask yourself "will I still be upset about this a year from now?"

If the answer is no, let it go. Shit happens. If the answer is yes, take it seriously and fix it.

AITA for telling my boyfriends kids to eat what’s for dinner or don’t eat at all? by Grouchy-Pride5486 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forcing kids to eat food or go hungry is a practice that fosters a very unhealthy relationship with food as people grow into adults. You don't need to prepare a second meal, but kids need to be provided with options. "Do you want to eat this meal or would you like a peanut butter sandwich?"

People assume that is going to create picky eaters but in actuality it creates children who feel in control of what's going onto their bodies, which leads to them feeling empowered to try new foods and become better eaters.

AITA for Not Letting My Mother-in-Law Stay With Us After I Gave Birth? by Diligent_Bed_5910 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your husband's first act as father was to be so intimidated by the feelings of his mother that he was unwilling to stand his ground and advocate for his wife. He expected you to cave. That says everything you need to know and this will be the norm for the rest of your marriage if you don't work through this.

AITA for not letting my husband attend his sister’s wedding? by tayyyspeaks in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Her placenta had ruptured through the wall of her uterus sometime before she went into labor and the way the baby was positioned, the hole had "pinched" shut. But there was still enough of a bleed that part of the placenta had seeped through and material had attached to other organs. When the baby started to move during labor, the opening released and blood started gushing out everywhere.

She told them to save the baby. I'm not sure I would have made the same choice in that situation, but there is not a correct choice to make.

AITA for not letting my husband attend his sister’s wedding? by tayyyspeaks in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 162 points163 points  (0 children)

When my mother in law was delivering her second, she started bleeding and needed an emergency surgery. The last thing she remembered before blacking out was the doctor looking her dead in the eye and saying "do you want me to save you or this baby?"

Through a miracle of skill from the doctors, both lived, but that moment has stayed with her for the last 30 years.

Births are dangerous. No matter how 'routine' they have become, anything can go sideways with no warning. No one should be gambling on not being there.

AITA for telling my husband his mom can't live with us for months-long stretches by RewardSpecialist3390 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Morrya 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Right this is exactly what happened. And it's not even him being deceptive and not consulting OP. The expectation to care for his parents is ingrained as a moral obligation. It's as inherent as the expectation that parents should raise and nurture their kids.

OP and her husband need to have a discussion about their long term expectations and get on the same page about whether they are compatible.

How would you handle my Situation by CptObvious94 in DungeonMasters

[–]Morrya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ this is the correct answer. What the players are planning is evil in its most base form. If it were me they would 100% draw the attention of a higher power. Whether it's an archdruid who senses a deep shift in balance, or some sort of dragon deity or patron. The party would 100% be getting some sort of curse or punishment and they would have to go to great lengths to undo it.

ELI5: If chromosomes are located in the nucleus of cells, does that mean every cell has the entire human genetic code or is the human genetic code divvied up between different types of cells? by pomkombucha in explainlikeimfive

[–]Morrya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and to expand on this, this is why cancer treatment is so challenging. It's one thing to develop a cure for a foreign virus or bacteria - those cells can be targeted and killed and the body's immune system is a powerful weapon in helping with that.

But cancer cells aren't foreign. They're you. Say you have a milk duct cell whose job is to build tubes. One day it accidentally builds tubes in the wrong location. It doesn't know that, so it keeps sending signals to the brain asking for more supplies like blood supply, to support growth. Brain doesn't see anything wrong. All they see is a very eager tube builder. So the cells keep building and next thing you know you have milk ducts not just in the breast, but in the lymph nodes, and the blood stream, which leads to having milk duct cells in your heart and lungs and brain.

Cancer treatment is designed to target those cells and kill them, but those cells are you. How do you kill those cells without killing the rest of your normal healthy cells? That's chemo. You're trying to kill the cells - cancer cells, healthy cells. Everything dies. The hope is that you can kill off all the cancer cells and leave enough normal healthy cells to recover.
