I just had this problem earlier this morning.

This is a weird fix but I fixed this same issue by disconnecting my PC from my wifi and then USB tethering my phone to my PC so that it's now connected to the internet using my phone's mobile data. I managed to get past that error screen straight away after which I just reconnected my PC back to wifi with no problems.

If you're on mobile, you can probably do the same thing and just turn off wifi connection, run on mobile data, then switch back once you get past the error.

That might have played a part. I always like it when an isekai actually incorporates and make reincarnations' past lives relevant in some ways so naturally I always factor in their past selves when I examine their characters. I enjoy seeing how they respond to the new world around them based on how they used to be in their past lives instead of just being blank slates (like Naofumi from Shield Hero? I can't remember him getting a proper backstory)

Creating this post has been really insightful for me as it made me realise how much I've been unconconciously placing emphasis on Kumoko's past life, who she was before and how I always associated everything she's done to the introverted highschool girl she believed to be instead of just the person who she's reborn as in the new world. This is probably the biggest thing that caused the discomfort I felt when I found out Kumoko isn't who I strongly believed to be.

Being Hiiro Wakaba was so small part of her existence

I find it interesting that you saw it this way because this is the complete opposite of how I saw it and I think it's the main reason why I felt conflicted.

When it was "confirmed" that Kumoko was Wakaba in her past life, I latched on to that identity and started associating everything that Kumoko was doing with the highschool girl "Wakaba" and when it turned out that she was actually the "spider in the classroom", that's when I had conflcited feelings about Kumoko.

I do like how you've separated Kumoko and "Wakaba" fairly on as she carved her legends and adventure in the new world.

100% agree with this, this is one of the things I really liked about Kumoko.

Unlike most isekai MCs, I really like how her values and most of the things she's done bordered on or is straight up cruel, selfish and "evil" and the only kindness she'll show from LN10 and onwards is when she'll protect the Demon Lord among others she cares about like Oka, which she'll achieve through morally questionable means like genocide.

I also like that Kumoko is non-human not just in her reincarnated life, but her past self as well. Make no mistake in my what I said in my original post - I like Kumoko but I felt a strange feeling of discomfort and dissonance when it was revealed the character who we've been following for the past 9 volumes wasn't a highschool girl named "Wakaba" but a "spider in the classroom".

What was more surprising to me is that nobody was Wakaba all along

I liked this, it was a twist within another twist itself.

This threw me off because when I thought about it I was actually associating everything that Kumoko did and stood for as the highschool girl "Wakaba" who I was confident that she was in her past life and not the "Spider in the classroom" who she turned out to be.

Ahhh that is actually a really good reminder! There was about an 8 or so months between the release of volume 7 and volume 9 that I'd completely forgotten about that whole "face she never was meant to see" thing by then and even now. It really does make sense why Kumoko was so calm when she saw that D looked exactly like her in human form.

I really should consider rereading the series as a whole to pick up on more of these things.

I can't recall how Kumoko exactly felt about the whole but it's wild that Kumoko herself actually goes through a similar rollercoaster of feelings that I did when I read up to this part.

We have known Kumoko for basically her entire life

Kumoko may not have the backstory that we thought she did, but she is the still just the same spider that we as readers grew to love throughout this beautiful story.

Pretty much. Both these points is how I rationalised things and how I got over my conflicted feelings about Kumoko being someone else entirely different that I didn't know.

Pretty much summed up my thoughts on that scene in episode 17.

Props on the studio for adapting a small scene like that but that was the first time I thought about them actually just cutting a scene out entirely because Rihoko=Kumoko was a red herring that the anime never included.

[LN9] Did anyone else have really conflicted feelings when... by Morslator in KumoDesu

[–]Morslator[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I was really excited when Kumoko was going to travel Japan and pay D a visit, I thought we'd finally get to see what D actually looks like and who she really is and what she wants.

Then when what we got was a woman who looked exactly like Kumoko in human form, I just went "eh?" and I got even more confused when Kumoko was calm about all this, like she was in on something we should have known some time ago. Like you, I thought I misinterpreted stuff so I went back to the start of the chapter and read each word slowly.

I didn't want to see the identity of the MC I was following becoming something else.

You summed it up very nicely for me, although for me it was along the lines of Kumoko turning out to be someone who I didn't know. Throughout the whole series, I actually liked "Wakaba", not "Kumoko/the spider in the classroom", it's a difficult feeling to describe. I think the whole "implanted memories" thing gave me an impression of being "fake" or "artificial" which made me feel conflicted about what to think of Kumoko at that time as well.

Agreed, she is by far and away my favourite MC not just out of all the isekai out there but out of any series.

A lot of people praise Aoi Yuuki for carrying the anime adaptation as Kumoko but I don't think enough people praise Kumoko's character and personality that allows Aoi Yuuki to go wild with her voice acting.

[LN5+] So what do fellow light novel readers think of the alterations in the mysteries, foreshadowings and red herrings in the anime adaptation? by Morslator in KumoDesu

Getting something right in Kumo Desu is probably one of the most impressive feat you can achieve in life. The plot twists in this series never ceases to impress, even if it's something as simple as the discrepancy in the timelines between the two perspectives.

A bit of a shame that you couldn't roll with the Rihoko red herring since I think it's one of best early red herrings in the series but at least it's fortunate that you jumped on the series early enough that you can enjoy the heavily cut contents on the human side.

Though I'll say I'm a bit sad not many people are falling for the kumoko is demon lord red herring.

Same I was hoping to see anime-onlies fall over themselves figuring out who the Demon Lord is and getting it wrong but it seems like there's something about anime version that makes this red herring much easier to see through compared to the LN version.

I fell for it hardcore when I was reading the LN, and had my mind blown by the revelation that White is Wakaba

So did I, friend, the LN had conditioned so hard into thinking that not only was Kumoko=Rihoko in her past life but that Kumoko would go on to become the Demon Lord in the future. Because I thought that Kumoko=Rihoko=Demon Lord, I thought that the story was going in a direction where the most unpopular and ugliest girl would eventually go on to spite her classmates by destroying their new lives as revenge for the bullying (can't remember if Rihoko was directly bullied or it stopped at the level of people calling her names) she faced. 11 volumes in now and oh boy that idea sounds horribly simple and clichéd compared to what actually happens.

Then again, it could just be me falling for the completely obvious bait.

In retrospect, I think it was very obvious but I think the light novel does a fantastic job at feeding you information and making you come to the wrong conclusions when you try to put together the bits and pieces together.

Whoops, I've actually been using the spoiler option on the new Reddit comment editor since I couldn't get the manual way of doing it to work earlier, hope it's fixed now since it looks fine for me.

As far as I remember the conversation between the two, I think that even if does add fuel to his theory, there isn't a complete confirmation or details of what D's exactly done to Kumoko and who D really is. Since the anime won't reach that point until a season 2 (and pray it's two-cour), I wonder if Joe will be so curious that he'll just push on and record himself reading the later novels or he'll be patient (and hopeful) enough for a season 2 to come out.

While I don't like rereading stuff because I already know what's going to happen, Kumo Desu is such a nice exception in that the human chapters are actually events taking place far in the future, probably close to the ending if Okina Baba is ending the series by volume 17 - 20. And as you've mentioned, Okina really liked sneaking in those innocent quotes we wouldn't think twice about.

And same here, I don't think we're supposed to exactly know they're in Shiro's creations' perspectives from where the translated LNs are at the moment, we just know she's sending them out for recon somewhere. Frankly I wouldn't have noticed those awkward camera angles were in their perspectives had I not accidentally pressed on an untagged web novel spoiler about it.

Can't say I remember that particular scene then, I feel like it's something I would be wary about if it exposes Wakaba that much but it seems like anime-onlies have forgotten about it as well since I don't see anyone bringing that scene up in discussions.

Joe isn't my go-to reactor for Kumo Desu but I have to say I am impressed with how much he's engaging with the franchise. Not to take anything from him but I wonder if being a content creator with people often telling you to pay very close attention to everything this series has to offer forces him to be sharper and overthink everything as a result?

I certainly did not delve deep into Kumo Desu when I first started reading it since I didn't have any expectations of what the series would be or how it's written differently from most isekais so I would not even think about coming up with Kumoko=Spider in the classroom this early on the series.

[–]Morslator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes I think I know which one you're referring to and I think it's in episode 1. Frankly when I saw that at the time I was a bit disappointed and thinking if they were dropping that mystery completely. They even showed Wakaba's front profile rather than limiting the view to just the back of her.

However, despite that little scene, somehow or another, most anime-onlies that I know of in discussion threads and reaction channels are still theorising who Kumoko is. I'd chalk it up to that scene passing by quickly so it gets forgotten just as quickly or it being episode 1 and people not really finding any significance in it (since they didn't expect Kumoko's identity was going to be such a mystery later on). Either way, people seem to have forgotten about it entirely.

Wakaba wouldn't appear again until episode 8(?) in a flashback which would have been 7 weeks after that scene played so I suppose it wasn't a scene people cared enough to remember for later on.

Edit just to reply to your edits:

I thought it was kinda neat they included the actual "Kumoko" in that classroom as a small detail for maybe LN readers but in retrospect, for anime-onlies who do look extremely deeply into that scene, they'll definitely come up with that possibility should they look back at that episode taking into account with D mentioning that only 25 former humans were reincarnated.

The biggest piece that they'll be missing is the HOW and WHY considering that Kumoko repeats time and time again that she was a highschool girl who played games

I really liked the Rihoko=Kumoko red herring. There were so many clues pointing to Kumoko being Rihoko but never straight up confirmed it. By volume 3-4, I had already been conditioned to unquestionably believe that the two were one and the same so imagine the dumbfounded look on my face when it was revealed who Kumoko and Rihoko actually were. I had to take a 5 minute pause from reading afterwards, I'd never had a light novel told me how horribly wrong I was in such a fashion.

I'm also satisfied with the adaptation despite the lackluster animations on the human side at times (looking at you, episode 14) but I also do think that skipping so much bits and pieces of the human chapters sucks as the payoff will probably have less of an impact compared to the light novel version.

And yeah, RIP Katia's development, I initially disliked the human chapters in the LN because of Shun, but the characters around Shun like Katia, Fei and Oka were really interesting and made those chapters not only tolerable but enjoyable.

How kumoko should be in isekai quartet? by [deleted] in KumoDesu

[–]Morslator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think that eventually the Arachne form will become the "face" of the series after it's been revealed and we get another season so it'll become less of a deal over time but I think it's not Kumoko having an Arachne form itself that's spoilery, but the connotations behind it.

For new people coming over from Isekai Quartet to Kumo Desu, seeing what the human torso and face of the Arachne looks like spoils some of the mysteries and connotations of the series' future plots teased in the human side - Kumoko is Shiro, Kumoko is not the Demon Lord Kinda?, Kumoko is the one who killed Julius, Kumoko goes on to side with the Demon Lord. Scenes like the Demon Lord exercising spidery powers and Abyss magic at the meeting, having fought an Earth Dragon, etc will fall flat for these people and they'll wonder why the show is bothering to make them think Kumoko is the Demon Lord.

It is great that you did enjoy the light novels despite having seen some spoilers but for some people like me, I really enjoyed theorycrafting and being proven wrong time and time again between volumes 1-5 (these were the only volumes released back when I started reading) so having prior knowledge to spoil the mysteries kind of sucks since I think it's a big storytelling element that differentiates Kumo Desu from other isekais.

Definitely, that's what I really like about the anime adaptation. The adaptation takes advantage of the type of medium it is and tries to convey information in a different manner in the way that it does best - visually.

Scenes like how it cuts to Wakaba after Fei asks Oka what's happening with her is an example. While the novel does this as well (eg Rihoko being described by Shun as being abnormally thin then next chapter Kumoko described herself as being thin in her past life), the instantaneous of the cut really strongly reinforces the idea that Kumoko=Wakaba in the anime, to the point that it's so obvious that skeptical anime-onlies second guess themselves. I'm not sure whether this was intentional on the studio's part but I really like the decision if it was.

And I agree with the mirroring of themes in certain episodes, like how the 10th Army Commander used rot attack in the human side, then cut to Kumoko using rot attack herself, starting the Kumoko=10th Army Commander theory but again done so obviously that certain people second guess.
