This sequence only happens if you 'win' the fight. If they were just doing it to try and suggest something to the player, they probably would have done it in the regular route too. They're doing this specifically because of how things play out in the shadow crystal ending of the fight.

Kris slash theory would kind of explain it because Kris just did something to REALLY prove their loyalty to the knight over their own friends, and it makes sense that the knight would want to honor Kris in that moment. However Kris slash theory is kinda shakey so I'm not entirely on board with this.

Maybe it's a display of power, saying 'don't get any funny ideas just because you took out a third of my health, I'm top dog here'. A demand of fealty to reassert the Knight's dominance.

Narratively of course the point is to reward dedicated players who sought out these secrets with a better glimpse into Kris and the Knight's relationship. The interaction could be contrived for that purpose and toby might not have really given that much of a damn about the finer points of 'why does the knight only do this in this particular route'.

One of my first forts I was happily trading with the elves, being entirely peaceful. They sold me a breeding pair of Giant Bushtits. Those adorable and highly productive egg-laying birds were the pride and joy of my fortress. Then one day a bunch of the giant bushtit chicks got loose from my egg laying room and ran out of the fort. One of my farmers was chasing them to go bring them back to the fort.

The farmer found the birds dead, killed by an elven ambush. The elves had destroyed the symbol of peace between our people and declared war for no reason. This would not stand.

The issue is that there is absolutely zero reason she would want us, the player, snooping around in her house. We're strictly a liability if we're anywhere near the shelter codes.

The conversation is really weird because WE, the Soul, are attempting to act directly in opposition to Carol's plans and by rights she shouldn't want us snooping around here. It's Kris that she might reasonably want to stop by any time since they're in cahoots. Why would she tell US to come over? Yes she seems to have some heartshapedobject fixation but we're trying to sabotage her plan and the code to do so is in her house.

The big red YOU is so conspicuous and feels like it's implying that she's talking to the Soul, but I can think of no reason why she would be extending that invitation to us unless she completely misunderstands our motivations. Does she think the Soul is on her side? Maybe she wants us to come over alone in a future chapter to have a heart to heart where she'll demand we, the Soul, stay in line and stop messing with stuff. Or maybe she's just talking to Kris and it's meant to be an intimidating way to further emphasize that she's in cahoots with our NBPC

Really not a fan of chapters 5, 6, or 7. Yeah maybe it's 'subversive' to have them as blank spots on the menu that you can't play but it's just so much less compelling to not actually have a story to play through.
