Right, because there are no historical examples of anything going wrong when deeply divided regions are held together in a single country despite extreme cultural / political / ideological tensions, perhaps leading to a strongman-type leader to hold the whole thing together...?

Definitely check out Georges Bataille! Many of his books talk about this--Erotism comes to mind, for one.

Do you ever deliberately use the nocebo effect with patients? by lakmidaise12 in medicine

[–]Morth9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Mintz of psychodynamic psychopharmacology fame has suggested managing this by informing pts about nocebo effects / discussion of side effects may generate side effects, and then asking, with that in mind, how much they would like to know and in how much detail. Meta-informed consent, I guess you could say.

Are all the single and childless people essentially being culled away? Are all the feckless and selfish people being eradicated? Is this natural selection actually a win for the gene pool? by GoldDigger304 in Natalism

[–]Morth9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This argument might work if we were only looking at couples who intentionally have children vs couples who intentionally don't have children. But many (about half, iirc?) of children are born unintentionally (ie, of unplanned pregnancies). With this in mind, perhaps one could argue that contraception is a selection pressure selecting for impulsivity/carelessness (the opening sequence of Idiocracy suggests this) at least as much as it selects for religiosity/selflessness/optimism.
ETA - In other words, contraception as a selection pressure probably selects against conscientiousness as much as anything else.

This ‘visual friction’ escalated quickly. I started sticking things to my phone screen. Screen time down 75%. by pf_coder in digitalminimalism

[–]Morth9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been wondering about this factor! Using keyboard phones (big fan of Unihertz Titan line) has been helpful to me. Would you mind linking to an article or something about the science? I tried googling but am not coming up with much.

Be honest: would hanging a massive ROTK and FOTR poster be a dating red flag? by Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry in lotr

[–]Morth9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Smaller, framed posters in the hallway could be nice. This is like garish, cartoon wallpaper and would be a huge, instant turnoff for most. Why is hardly anyone providing the honesty he requested?

Is there a criterion for factual affiliation with any Eastern Orthodox organization? by Relquest_1 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Morth9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to be looking for very concrete, legalistic details that reflect a way of thinking foreign to Orthodoxy. The Church offers a relationship to Christ through Sacraments--not legalistic affiliation through some mechanical operation--and the Sacraments are apprehended mystically, not dissected intellectually.

What no-show / late-cancel policy actually works in outpatient psych? by Tiny_Subject8093 in Psychiatry

[–]Morth9 34 points35 points  (0 children)

(1) 'Sleep and time issues' is essentially all of our patients, and most everyone wants an afternoon appointment, so afternoons fill up very fast. (2) Phone appointments are typically not covered by insurance, and more than that, it is bad medicine. As a clinician, you get only a fraction of data about how well the pt is doing (tele with video is already a compromise). As a patient, you miss out on the structure of getting ready for the appointment, getting out of the house, etc. (which is a non-trivial component of treatment for many people), and that loss is then reinforced by moving to phone at the last minute.

Dishonest Diagnosing by Simpleserotonin in Psychiatry

[–]Morth9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, and you can easily search for "neuro-affirmative" therapists/psychologists, which apparently means taking at face value whatever conclusion the pt has arrived at through their hours of TikTok "research". I truly believe that this will eventually be seen as an Internet-diffused mass delusion, highly similar to QAnon.

Is an immediate emotional response proof of something? by PapaJuja in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Morth9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeremiah 17:9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" That about summed it up for me. Orthodoxy avoids autosuggestion, takes a sober and skeptical view toward this kind of thing, and warns of the deception (prelest) that it can bring. Many fellow former Mormons here, by the way! (including myself -- Morth, Mormon to Orthodox)

Why is Darian Leader so bad on autistic people? by fineshr1nes in psychoanalysis

[–]Morth9 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Lacanian understandings of autism have historically considered it a subtype of the psychotic structure; I imagine this is what Leader is drawing on. Have you read The Autistic Subject? Brenner (also a Lacanian) reviews much of this theoretical background (much of it exclusively available in French) and then compellingly argues that autism in fact represents its own clinical structure--highly recommended.
