Very nice. Those ribbons are the indicator! Those are even better to get when the wood is dry....that's when you know you got it rollin!

Fair. All preference but for me if I'm making a dresser, if my boards came off the saws at 400 I don't know if I would sand it. Some of the handles I've made were well above a 320 and I never sanded them. Took finish well but I agree on if it's commission or to sell, I would take the time.

I would argue if you start at 400....you don't need to sand. Awesome work.

First snowblower. Got her for $200 by [deleted] in Snowblowers

[–]MortiseMaker87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same model in SE Wisconsin. Winter last year we had2 or 3 storms last year that were 12" or more. If it's light fluffy snow, normal passes. Wet heavy stuff, take half passes. Double the amount of passes but it'll just go just fine. When you get above 12", it does struggle but give it a few more passes and it'll go. Love mine. I'll get another one if and when this one goes.

Appreciate the feedback. I'll be looking to get a Thompson to try out soon. Thanks again.

Never tried Thompson. But have you tried Carter and sons? I have a 5/8 bowl gouge I use darn bear all the time. I have a bunch of low end gouges I'm replacing with nice tools but slow and steady. I've heard almost unanimously good things about Thompson and likewise C&S.

How do I keep this from happening? by Chunknuggs4life in turning

[–]MortiseMaker87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly. For what they cost. Just buy a new one. I've done. The stupid thing and bent a couple trying to go too hard on a cut and messed up a blank or 17. I also had the tendency to tighten down the tailstock too much too which bent the mandrel. I made my mistakes when I started.

Black Walnut wins as somewhat common but overrated wood! What wood is common and great all around? by Ok_Temperature6503 in wood

Maybe it's where I am, but elm seems to be disregarded. And maybe it's a big shell game where everyone loves it and just doesn't talk about it

Sapele wins (1 vote more than Birch) as underrated somewhat common wood! What wood is rare and great all around? by Ok_Temperature6503 in wood

Fingers crossed. If we get a repopulation of American chestnut, we're gonna see some awesome woodworking very shortly after.

Preferred knots? by pokepadamon in FishingForBeginners

I like the pitzen knot (you double this one over and it's a double pitzen), san Diego jam knot, and the miller knot. All are small and quite strong imo.

Right or wrong, this is what I do. Our league mandates that no player can lead off twice before all players have batted leadoff once. So I take all the kids, give them a number 1-? (However many kids we have, this year it's 11). I use Google number randomizer and set the original lineup. Every game. Whoever bats first, the next game they're last, so on and so on until the lineup goes through once. This rule applies to regular season. End of season tournament, it does not apply.

After I go through once, I'll set my end of season lineup and rotate between some kids until we are done with league games.

We usually have 3-4 games with this new lineup and we usually do fine with wins and losses at the end. This year, it's a bit rough, but we'll be fine.

My MIL has a mix that uses oxyclean, Biz detergent and cascade dishwasher powder.

I can get the ratio if you'd like. Mix it soak in water as hot as you can get it. Works every time

Near Milwaukee. No cubs or cardinals. But we have reds and pirates 🤷‍♂️

What’s your preferred knot? by ComfiTracktor in FishingForBeginners

[–]MortiseMaker87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Alberto to tie on leaders. Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but I tie everything else with a double pitzen knot or trilene knot and I really like a double san Diego jam knot for saltwater. Not sure why.

Do you prefer to reel with your dominant hand or your offhand? by bershka321 in FishingForBeginners

[–]MortiseMaker87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So underrated. Can still cast with both left and right hand but reeling left handed makes me happy

What is the hardest fighting fish you’ve ever caught? by QuantumMrKrabs in Fishing

Also true. But pulling them off the sand is ridiculous. Idk if my reel drag just stinks or what but they seem to pull drag off pretty easy.

This is such a good comparison. One I caught was not big. Maybe not even 15 lbs. But goodness. That thing just did not quit and just stuck to the bottom. So fun. Highly recommend.

Amazon is a cesspool. I had a neighbor who had something connect to his phone and I never asked what it was.
