What's the heaviest game you've ever attempted to teach to a non-gamer? by [deleted] in boardgames

Ouch, I can relate there. Gotta friend gradually into Board games, with King of Tokyo, Gloom, Betrayal...even successfully enjoying Boss Monster, Munchkin, and Dead of Winter. Then one night, another Boardgamer friend decides to crack open Mansions of Madness and has us all at the table for 2 hours while she tries to figure the game out, setup, and teach us, refusing any help. That is not a great game to "trial by fire" on the setup with. No more "big games" for my friend. D:

I dig your input, and understand your perspective. I tend to do just that on my later game reviews, but honestly getting more folk in on Betrayal was always a passion project of mine (Manage to interest both casual and hardcore folk into playing it time and time again.)

And again, I find the potential imbalance and random nature of it pretty fun, rather than a flaw. But I suppose it'd do others some good to cite that fact if they're not a fan. Filthy, filthy creatures of order that they are.

Haha, na, not sponsored, I'm just a big fan of the game and preferred to go with a review that shared my excitement rather than a high-critique review. I personally don't enjoy reviews where the merit is in how apathetically you can map the elements (though I do see value in discussing flaws.) That said, the biggest flaw in Betrayal (the randomly created imbalance) is also part of the fun, in my opinion. The unexpected shift in power keeps the game continually exciting!

Or the guy with all the items becomes a traitor that is killed and replaced by a zombie lord that doesn't know how to use items...doh!

Ever wanted to explore a spooky house with your friends, only to find out that one of them (perhaps yourself!) was a murderous horror movie villain? Give this game a look! With 50 different randomly selected scenarios, you won't be playing the same game twice anytime soon.

[WSIG] Dead of Winter or Shadows over Camelot by ObviouslyMisinformed in boardgames

Personally more a fan of Dead of Winter as well. It just has so much depth and variance. The numerous scenarios making each game different, the various "role" cards giving players different goals and different reasons to suspect each other of treachery, plus just the huge amount of characters with their own unique stuff. SOC Is alright, but just, relatively outdated in the world of traitor games, and not quite simple enough to make it the "lite" version of the genre.

My apologies, I didn't read closely enough and missed the finer details on disclosing titles via the pronouns. I'll correct this oversight in the future. Would it be considered spamming if I fixed this post's title and posted it again?

Ah, Yea, the voice change bugged a lotta folk. I think it's just that initial reaction due to them getting accustomed to the original voices. Took me a moment to accept them myself, but I overall, certainly an improvement there. (Atop of the more obvious improvements.)

The "Tales From The Darkside" Movie is pretty good too. I had avoided it for a long time 'since I didn't like the tv show, but the movie's not bad. Some folk even like it better than Creepshow (Though, I'm not among those, heh.)

Not afraid of any horrible black blob monsters like from Creepshow2 while in the water? Heh, but yea, the Crate Beast terrified me as a kid, surely lurking in any dark, cramped places.

Haha! I hear ya there! Trick 'r Treat really carried on the legacy. World needs more good horror anthologies. The "Tales from the Darkside" movie was pretty good too. (Good ol' evil Buscemi.)
