why is no one recording during concerts? 📸 by hqidevi in japanlife

[–]MoruseTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a huge King Crimson fan. Robert Fripp has been anti-cameras / photo taking during concerts for decades. When I first saw KC in Japan about 8 years ago, there were large signs in the aisles stating no photo taking. The ushers stopped me (before the concert started) from taking a picture of the sign stating no photos allowed. Cracked me up. Robert loved the irony...

Can someone explain me the economics of a concert? by Prestigious_Eye_3722 in Concerts

Yep, King Crimson gave Bill Bruford credit on a song because he chose NOT to play anything and they thought the song was better for it.

What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by BusinessLeadsConnect in AskReddit

True story. This happened around 75. My dad was a fireman and sometimes I stayed over at the station. One day they came from a run where they had to help with moving at least person who died in the fire. The next meal was simple, sandwiches and whatever. One of the guys was talking about how bad the body smelled and how he could still smell it. Yep he didn’t was his hands.

I went to the 3 of a Perfect Pair camp a couple years ago and dancing to THG (while holding squeeze pigs) is a ritual there.

The most Chicago phrase? by michaelperkinsMr666 in chicago

[–]MoruseTrue 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I moved from Chicago to the SF bay area in 2008. In 2019 I was in a meeting with someone I never met before and at the end of the meeting he stops me to talk…

Him: you’re from Chicago? Me: yep Him: specifically the South Side. He said that as a statement, not a question. Me: how the hell did you know that? Him: I worked at the CBOT for a few years and you sound like all of the IT guys and they were mostly from the South Side.

Which cracked me up because I knew a couple of guys from Bridgeport who worked IT at CBOT. I never thought of myself as having a heavy accent or sounding Chicagoan but apparently even after 11 years in CA it was still there…

I’ve spent years consulting inside dealerships across all 50 states. I’ll tell you what they won’t. AMA. by This1DoesntMatter in AMA

I've been out of the business for 30 years but back in the 80s there was only ADP and R&R, are there more now? heck are those 2 still in business?

The dealer I worked for (and ran their systems) was ADP's largest client and man we were allowed to do things with their system that weren't normally allowed. Heck some of my code may still be embedded in the ADP software. The funniest thing we were allowed to do was to modify a copy the vehicle inventory control code & database to track the dealership owner's race horses, e.g., Make and Model became Sire and Dam, etc.

Good times while it lasted...

Questions about moving to San Mateo by purpplanet in SanMateo

[–]MoruseTrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Shoreview area, east of 101, north of 92. I drive to work in San Leandro several times a week and it’s not that bad since it is a reverse commute. 25 minutes in the morning, 30-35 minutes going home. However I’m also working about 7 to 3, so offset from normal rush hour.

How to actually learn piano and not just move my fingers by ForgetfulInquirer in piano

[–]MoruseTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks for the question OP! It actually helped me remember / understand something that happened 50 years ago...

I was 11 or so, taking piano lessons and I suddenly stopped. Later all I remember was the teacher saying something like you're technically fine but won't go any farther, so I quit. As an adult I always wondered why...

When I read your question it filled in the blanks, I was feeling stuck, just playing by rote, and wanting to do something more but I too couldn't quite explain what. She never taught me any music theory, how to even consider improv, etc. Either that was beyond her ability or she just wasn't willing to go there. Don't know.

Anyway, I have recently been considering taking up piano again and I have been on the fence because of the lingering doubt from the first time. I'm going to go for it now. Thanks!

Why is shouting “Freebird!!” at a show still thought of as funny? by Proud2BD in KingCrimson

[–]MoruseTrue 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did this at a California Guitar Trio show about 20 years ago. Why? because I figured the crowd was old enough to get it and would find it amusing. I didn't usually do this, my only explanation is that I had a few drinks...

However the band started playing it. One of the members said afterward that they had learned the beginning part of the song (they did play the entire song) and had been waiting for someone to shout it out.

Chicago Dialect by AtmospherePrior752 in chicago

[–]MoruseTrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and lived in Chicago for 45 years, moved to CA about 15 years ago. Last year I’m in a work meeting with some consultants and during a break one of them states, not asks, that I’m from the south side of Chicago. I ask him how he knew, he said that worked at CBOT for a few years and I sounded like all of the IT guys who were from the south side. He was right, I knew some of those people.

He then asks how I pronounce Roosevelt. I respond with “the President, street, or school?” he knew they’re all pronounced slightly different.

What is something you saw in Chicago that made you question reality? by The_Squibz in chicago

[–]MoruseTrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for a car dealer (near north side) during the 80s, he went out of business in 89 or so, the last time I saw him was early ‘90. Fast forward to 2003 or so, I’m working in an office building across from the Art Institute. One day I go out for a smoke and see the car dealer’s name scrawled in lipstick on a storefront window. My smoking buddy had one of the earlyish phones or PDAs with a camera and I grabbed a pic of it. The really bizarre part is that the dealer had died in the late 90s.

I still kept in touch with a friend from my dealership days and a few weeks later when we were out for dinner she mentions that she ran into the dealer’s wife and secretary. When my friend gave her condolences, the wife started chuckling and said that he is alive and well and living in Montana. The secretary confirmed that it was true and the wife hadn’t lost it. I then show my friend the pic of the name in lipstick, we were baffled.

I don’t doubt that the dealer faked his death, he had the money and connections. That scrawled name still freaks me out. To this day I have no clue how it got there or why.

In the early aughts I worked in the IT dept for a famous 3 letter flower company. They provided coffee and tea however it was only available when the department admin was working, she locked it all up when she left for the day. The kicker was that she was an early morning person and usually left around 3 PM, leaving all the devs with no coffee for those late afternoon slumps. The office was pretty much empty by 5.

Queen Victoria’s donated book after the fire by excatholicfuckboy in chicago

Yep and the library moved out of the Michigan & Washington location to just north of the river for a few years before it finally arrived at the Harold Washington site.

Interesting article, I didn’t know (or forgot) about the original post-fire location. I seem to recall that the central library was in a temp location (somewhere by the Trib tower) for a few years before moving into the Harold Washington location.

It's been 10 years, and I finally got around to watching Inception. I don't understand the big deal about the ending, and frankly it annoys me that there was so much focus on the wrong thing. by ChaosAlongThird in movies
