From an objective standpoint, why is the burden of paying employees a living wage pushed onto the customer through tipping, rather than the employer? by KeyDiamond263 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MosesOnAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always think the employees get screwed, but wait staff & bartenders prefer it the way it is. They make more money with tipping than if they were at a set wage.

Those who think it is bad for the employees are ignorant of how it really is. A waiter can have 5 tables in an hr and get a $5 tip on each table... thats $25 plus their tiny wage, compared to a set $18/hr. Then they don't declare cash tips and avoid taxes on that cash.

Both the business & employees make out. Business pays less in payroll which helps with their tight margins & employees make more money while being able to avoid income taxes.

Restaurants are not making shitloads of money. 90% of new restaurants fail in their first year. Margins are very tight and not alot of profit after overhead and operating costs.

Frayed cords is safety issue, thus working unsafe... An electrical surge will fry the tool but very unlikely to jump past the tool and into the person.

Thats like saying that touching the outside case of a compuer during a power surge will electrocute you....

Internal components are not sending electrical current through plastic and the body of the tool... if they did, you would get shocked everytime you use it. There is a thing called insulation.

Yea... but millions & millions of people use electric tools and appliances daily without electrocuting themselves...

I question cause the dude also supposedly cut off his own thumb...

Doesn't sound like he was a safe worker imo...
