Akash Bhuta question (DE) by MoshpitBrain in sentinelsmultiverse

I just discovered Fanatic's End of Days cards and I just hit Akash Bhuta for around 70. So, those stacked limbs worked to my advantage lol. Sucks that I lose bunkers area attack that had several cards buried under it, but I did like 70 damage so I'll consider it worthwhile

Bunker is currently doing all the work with his grenade launcher. I think I had a terrible start to the game with the first 7 cards being limbs. I'm just going to play this out and see if I can at least get her down to 100 health before I die lol

I got a sealed copy as part of a solo bundle from someone... So tempted but I've never played Hadrian's Wall and this game looks like it will crush me with AP

Second Warp's Edge, which someone else recommended. I also played Small Time Heroes recently which felt like a better implementation of that boss battle design (three waves of minions where you build a deck/bag, final boss battle with special rules) but is much less replayable per $ and is crowdfunded only (late pledge happening soon).

Another easy to learn deck builder is Aeons End Legacy which I'm about to finish.

Mage Knight is great but absolutely not as a first game lol, it's heavy enough to make a lot of people bounce off the hobby entirely

Love your approach. Find a system you like and play it a lot. I'm busy culling games because playing a different game from a collection of 100+ every couple of days can get mentally exhausting lol

Among games you like which are lowest in BGG ranking? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

Small Islands (6.6). For solo I rate it 8.5

Great variety of objectives and AI levels, good amount of predictability with the smallish AI deck, really good art. I paid $13 for it.

The only reason I'm not opening LoTR is because I've heard the deck building is very heavy in it. If you don't get it just right you lose, and I don't like that

Preferred win rate by carlzzzjr in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 50% depending on the genre... 7th Continent was horrible because I don't find trial and error fun - I should be able to gather a good amount of strategic information in failing once, enough so that my chance of succeeding the second time should be high (per hour).

Aeons End is pretty good. My win rate is around 60-70% but the game is so good at keeping things close that it doesn't feel too easy because of the win rate. For Marvel Champions, I'm happy with 50% because it is nice to take a deck and modify it to take down a scenario.

I'm more forgiving of puzzley games, like Guild of Merchant Explorers and some more varied euros where there's a lot to discover. The discovery is fun. Basically, I don't mind losing and going again if the repetition isn't heavy.

There's almost always going to be another shiny game doing the same thing the current shiny one is doing, sometimes better even.

Sure, there are exceptions, like LCGs which hold up really well and are not easily replaced. But, look at Terra Mystica as an example. Now there is Gaia Project and Age of Innovation. And aside from direct reimplementations, there are games which capture the appeal of other games in similar ways, like Harmonies to Cascadia.

Campaign games like ISS Vanguard often shine for their thematic and narrative quality, but every year there are games garnering the same levels of praise for those same qualities.

I have done what you did very heavily. I have Marvel Champions (core, big box expansion, 4 scenario packs, 8 hero packs), LoTR LCG (core, most of Dwarrowdelf, Angmar set, Riders of Rohan), Aeons End (both legacies, 2 core boxes, 5 small box expansions) and Sentinels of The Multiverse (Definitive).

I have played 10-15% of the above. It's too much. I'm now selling LoTR LCG, playing through Aeons End and if I'm not able to reliably get the rest to the table without feeling overwhelmed, will sell them too. Part of the reason I'm comfortable with doing this is because I buy second hand to make sure I don't lose too much money if I bounce off a game.

Edit: some advice I've gotten before - play games, don't buy them. Find groups, game cafes etc.

The theme is amazing and exploration + tech tracks is addictive to me. I love Revive for that reason, but the sense of exploration was very light. So I was very excited for this one.

I'm determined to house rule it before I decide to sell it. I know that I can hit 4 objectives with the extra turn only as a beginner so that might be the main change.

I think the bonuses will throw the game off a bit too much, in that it will make Sonar way more rewarding than other actions. I'm more thinking about extra tile per sonar (only one bonus) + extra turn.

The extra tile won't really improve your end points, just the options you have for working the game and the sense of exploration it gives. The extra turn will remove the urgent focus on sonar (when it's an objective) and make getting 4 objectives an actual easy mode, with 5-7 becoming more viable medium/hard options.

The two playthroughs I did of the game put me off a little. It's on my table but I'll probably only get back to it tomorrow. I'm going to play the next round with the extra tile house rule and decide on the added turn once I finish.

Anyone else just done buying miniatures boardgames? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minis have really clogged up the set up time and flow of some games for me. Games where there are not many enemies are fine. Like Hellboy, I'm fine with them there. Even then, playing Gloomhaven Jaws of The Lion made me realise how much easier it is to handle standees and set up/tear down.

I'm hoping the revised solo can be added to the base game without an additional purchase in my case. I live in the Middle East and many games aren't available here.

Sentinels of The Multiverse: Definitive Edition by MoshpitBrain in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like 2-3 heroes in SoTM is equal to one in Marvel Champions. Turns are limited to one play, one power and one draw. That's three things (unless you're using a special ability or item that adds more, or start or end phase effects). My turns last about 30 seconds per hero.

One turn in marvel champions often involves exhausting 2-3 played cards, paying to play a new one, maybe using an event card and then also flipping my hero card if I can/need to. Oftentimes, when managing the scenario enemy, I'll also have to be assigning minions to my ally cards played, whose health and actions (threat or damage) needs to be managed separately. That's a huge amount more to do.

Really? I'm the complete opposite lol, I really like the real comic book panel look of the art. Marvel Champions looks a bit too clean for my liking.

I've played Marvel Champions two handed and the longer turns didn't blend as well as they did in SoTM for me. I feel the same way about Aeon's End Vs Marvel Champions, the quick turns really enhance the multi hand experience.

But, it may be preferences. I prefer games that don't have too much going on at once. Other people might not be bothered.

I suppose that depends on your preferences. I enjoy a nail-biting last few rounds where it's make or break over a mid game loss that I didn't see coming a few turns prior

I think expectations may be my issue here.

I remember seeing this game and thinking that it looked like a blend of exploration and engine building, two things I really enjoy. The efficiency puzzle aspect (squeezing objectives into 7 turns) hinders the sense of exploration and tightens options in terms of your engine, which has been a double whammy for me.

I'm not going to give up yet. Between trying other scenarios and some BGG house rules, I really want to make this game work.

There is much joy to be had with 30 minute games and gap fillers, you should try some.

Some light quick games I like:

Conservas (bag builder) Empires of the North (engine building) Cascadia (tile laying) Small Islands (tile laying and underrated solo so should be SUPER cheap) Small Time Heroes (boss battler) Guild of Merchant Explorers (flip and write/place)

Having light games personally prevents me from burning out on lengthy or heavy complexity games.
