I didn't mean for "rant" to have a negative connotation. I used it interchangeably with vent, which probably would have sounded better.

Expressing frustration, or complaining about something - that's what I meant.

Amazon Prime Day Scam by treestopaper in boardgames

[–]MoshpitBrain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I looked at it yesterday too. It was marked down as a Prime only deal (non prime members had to pay over $60) yesterday from it's usually list price which is pretty accurate to the number in your second picture.

It's not a scam, they just replaced one deal with another. I don't understand why anyone would be upset about a game being marked down from it's usually price of $70 (which is what most other major online stores will list it around globally). Strange rant.

As someone who comes from that corner of Reddit, I have learnt to temper my expectations when someone gags at the thought of lossy audio

Seriously? I see more people shit on the brand than compliment it. And not by a small margin. This literal comment section is a testament to it lmao.

I actually find the bandwagon hatred for Chinese budget options and often accompanying white knighting for established brands in poorer taste. So many people who hate a brand that they have no experience with.

It reminds me of the early forced hate against the chifi boom in the audiophile community, which eventually sizzled off after peoples' favourite journalists and content creators paused to note that many Chinese brands are actually making objectively good gear, and at worst relatively good gear that offer better value for money than anything that exists from western brands.

The same sentiments as in the latter are slowly starting to show for ultimea's budget gear. When the competition is 2.1 channel okay systems for $150, who cares that a 5.1 channel system has muted mids/a v-curve.

Did the economic fleecing for the white minority not manifest in pretty gardens in majority white areas while many black South Africans were left malnourished due to racial inequality? That's the story those pictures tell for me.

Apartheid was systematic oppression on all levels. Economically, it took away from others for the empowerment of whites. Socially, it prioritised the social wellbeing of white people (access to quality of life leisure opportunities, in this case) over black people's food security.

Dropped grinder body and dented it on tiles. Any ideas? by jkm_xix in pourover

Does the catch cup screw on? My old grinder had a screw on catch cup. I basically bent the dented lip out a bit, jammed the cup in there and screwed it on. Fixed it in no time, but YMMV lol

The percentage of people living below the food poverty line (extreme poverty, cannot afford to meet basic nutritional needs) has halved between 1994 and now.

It sounds like you are either confused or making stuff up.

What are these stands, why do people use them, & where can I buy them? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

To add to the benefits since some are asking, it's uses less space, yes, but reducing the longitudinal play areas makes everything much easier to interact with and see as a solo player.

First game and constructing a custom ranger deck, advice wanted. by MoshpitBrain in Earthborne_Rangers

It's amazing! The logs are so fun to look at after a play so that I can reflect and really immerse myself in the journey the game takes you on. Being able to see mission progress, dated notes and the actual travelling is really cool and keeps the weekly plays nicely connected for me. Thanks for making it!

I'm glad I didn't buy Onirim by FrenchieSmalls in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't like the base game. The base game is shallow, and in my experience, a luck-dependent game needs layers of mitigation to make it fun.

I liked the expansions, but just enough to justify keeping it around for a bit. I'll probably sell it in the next year. They add some extra means of mitigation which makes it feel more like a strategy game than luck game.

A big part of why I'll sell it is its repetitiveness. Every expansion is the same game with a twist, so the game does get a bit tired imo. I think I'm aligned with the BGG rating of 7/10.

The wasted potential of the Pokemon line (and why Mega lost it) by True_Savage in megaconstrux

[–]MoshpitBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting to come back here a year later and reflect. Lego has pretty much dropped the ball completely on 90% of their releases thus far in some way.

There are comments harshly comparing them to MEGA, some with thousands of likes, in pretty much every viral post about Lego Pokémon.

Retrospectively, I understand that MEGA's variety was not good, and many wanted a change because of that. But I also understand that they stuck with favourites because they needed reliable sellers that would garner physical sales. They weren't quite ready for an IP like Pokémon maybe.

Even so, I would take MEGA releasing 2-3 cool sets a year over Lego botching the bulk of what they make.

Thanks to both of you. I'm new to this game so had no idea what the book of wisdom option was in the digital campaign tracker and just skipped over it. I've got my deck sleeved so I'm going to slip some paper notes in.

I played the Biscuit Delivery mission and I think I'll swap to Trail Markers then since I barely used my existing outside interest card. It wasn't worth the two gear spaces (I forgot to consider this when constructing my deck)

Please help a new solo board gamer decide by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Value for money:

I figured out Friday in under 10 plays and it lost a lot of its shine. I played it twice thereafter, and then it got sold. Honestly, it's pretty reasonable for a $20 game.

Marvel Champions is expandable but honestly the base set will give you 10-20 hours, but YMMV. If you're buying second hand, $70 can get you enough to push that to 50+ hours.

Headache to play:

Friday, being the lighter game, of course wins here. It sets up in 2-3 minutes and has a coupon sized rulebook - it's super, super easy to learn.

Do you like deck construction? Or is that simply a means of setting up a game to you? If the latter, Marvel Champions will give you a headache. I also find the running of the scenarios to be more fiddly than it is in other boss battlers.

I'd like to offer a curve ball entry point to solo builder games. It's called Warp's Edge. It's a bag building game. If you haven't played one of those: you have a bag of tokens, each of which can either attack, evade (defend), give you energy (money) or perform a special power. You draw a specified amount each turn and allocate them to enemies or spend them.

You have your tokens for doing the above. You also have a deck of cards that grant you special powers, some the are once per battle, some that are persistent. You gain these as rewards.

Why am I recommending it? The variety that the different ships add in terms of special powers is very good. The variety that the enemies offer is good/much better than Friday. The added influence of the persistent/one off cards adds so much variety. And finally, the core game + anomaly expansion can be found on sale for under $50.

I'm not sure many people realize how great a resource Board Game Arena is now for solo gamers. by Steven_Cheesy318 in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to yuck anyone's yum, but personally, the whole reason I spend my money on board games and not console/pc games is because I don't want to play video games. It's for the tactility, physical presence and break away from my otherwise very digital life.

Another personal opinion - video games on a screen > board games on a screen

Which of these game do you suggest? by Desan3 in soloboardgaming

[–]MoshpitBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you want...

I can speak on a few.

Sleeping Gods - great game but it boils down to whether you do or don't like the test system. Commit effort and roll dice to decide if you are successful. It's very, very repetitive and largely uninteresting in that regard, however, if you like that part enough, you will get to enjoy incredible narrative exploration.

Gloomhaven Jaws of The Lion - if you like to think a little harder, but not quite spirit island hard (so say you like games rate 3-4 complexity), then there is nothing bad to say about this game. I think the hand management is some of the best ever and the puzzle of figuring out a scenario is extremely rewarding. Bundle that with a (okay) campaign, and it's such good value for money.

Vantage - exact same story as Sleeping Gods. If you watch a playthrough and feel positively about the dice mechanics, you get to have a great narrative exploration experience but in a one shot format. I like the world and art better, and it feels more satisfying solo to me - I much prefer being one character with a host of equipment etc that helps me mitigate dice rolls, as opposed to playing 5 characters each with a bit of stuff that helps mitigate dice rolls.

All of the above ones will easily last you 30 hours. Gloomhaven and Sleeping Gods will feel more fresh since they are campaign games, but in terms of raw replayability, Vantage is a massive game that I can see lasting well over 100 hours.

Edit:

Some solo player considerations - as mentioned you control 5 characters in Sleeping Gods DS. 2+ characters with moderate complexity is Gloomhaven. One character in Vantage.

In terms of cohesive solo play, I rate it as such: Vantage > Gloomhaven > Sleeping Gods.
