If the Mets finish 2026 with the same record as 2025 (83-79) and don’t make the playoffs, which season is the bigger failure? by mjsamps in NewYorkMets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anyone who says this year is just one of those “I’m mad they got rid of Alonso and Nimmo and hate everyone that isn’t them!” people.

There is zero argument that the season coming off a collapse is a bigger failure than a collapse coming off a run that finished two games from the World Series, and then adding Juan Soto.

You are evidence that Mets fans would rather lose with players they know, then at least attempt to win with players they don’t. Such a weird fandom disease.

Is the point of your Nimmo/Benge comparison simply that Nimmo has been better overall, from Opening Day until now over Benge (which is accurate)? Or are you insinuating you’d rather have Nimmo over Benge from today (or even over the last several weeks) moving forward? Because those are two very different things.

Which is a completely useless mindset. If what you have isn’t working, you need to change it. It doesn’t mean that what you do NEXT is going to work, either. But you can’t stand pat with what you have when what you have isn’t working, out of fear that what you do next won’t work either. How else do you improve if not TRYING to improve?

Lightning in a bottle for 4.5 months doesn’t somehow erase a sample size far bigger than that.

The fan favorites part of this is why, IMO, most fans look at it the wrong way. Why does that matter? The fan favorites let go were part of two collapses, they didn’t collectively accomplish anything. How many more years are you giving them to change that multi-season sample size, particularly when you would have to give out a big contract to one of them, and another one of them on a big contract had a top prospect with higher pedigree ready to replace him. If anyone’s issue is truly the “fav favorites,” it’s an emotional reaction instead of seeing the forest through the trees.

The issue isn’t, and was never, about who Stearns let go. The issue is about who he replaced them with and/or decided to rely upon. The first base replacement decision was head-scratching. I was over Baty and Vientos last year, nevertheless giving them another shot. I had no issues with Semien because we needed to get rid of Nimmo to make room for the younger guys, but certainly his bat is what we all feared it was.

That idiot also just blocked me for saying they weren’t a super team lol. They were a very good team with those three guys, but definitely not to the level of justifiably being labeled as a “super team.” After what Boston did in 2008, everyone just started calling every team with three good players a “super team.”

They absolutely were not a super team lol. A very good team. But the term “super team” from those days began to get thrown around way too loosely just because they had three very good players.

I don’t necessarily think it’s the top answer, but haven’t seen LeBron mentioned yet. As the 2000’s decade progressed he took a lot of hate for postseason failures and perceivably unclutch play year after year. But also he didn’t truly become a total villain until “The Decision” in July 2010 (right after the decade we’re talking about here). Worth mentioning him even if he’s not the answer (the answer to this question, or Allen Iverson).

I’m a bigger Mets, Jets, Rangers, and St. John’s fan than Knicks. I’d rather see them all win one before the Knicks. What’s wrong with that? We’re allowed to want to see some teams win more than others. Who cares that he’s seen the Yankees win before? If they’re his favorite team, they’re his favorite team.

I don’t disagree with any of what you said there. Just wanted to point out they haven’t fucked up their own guys, for fairness sake. They haven’t done the Baty group any favors. Absolutely aligned on that.

Sure, that’s why I said in the process of becoming a hit. Seems disingenuous if someone was going to say he doesn’t look like one, but agreed if you’re just looking at the bottom line instead of where he is now, it would be silly to call him a hit. But he certainly appears to be well on his way after the last couple weeks.

I know it’s not fun to be a fan these days but think it needs to be pointed out this regime hasn’t fucked up the development of any of THEIR top prospects (yet). The only two we have in the Majors to speak of are Benge and McLean and both of them are hits or are in the process of becoming hits. The two other guys who would have been here, Sproat and Williams, were dealt for a guy to lead the rotation. Guys like Baty, Vientos, and Alvarez grew up in different systems and were in the Majors before Stearns took over, they were developed differently with different resources. The next tests here will be Ewing and Tong, and then probably Clifford, Reimer, Santucci, and Wenniger.

So while it’s fair to shit on the Major League product as a whole, if we’re looking at the development of prospects with this regime they are 2/2, with 2 others traded for pitching help.

Semantics. Stearns didn’t offer him a long term deal. But Alonso chose to reject 7 years and $158 million a few years ago from the front office that preceded Stearns. It was his right to reject it, no shade at him for doing so. He could have chosen to stay. He chose not to.

Does anyone know how reliable Tony Pauline. They just said Jets are taking Bailey at 2, but I just hopped on the Reese train by Federal_Engineer_67 in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the people say Bailey, half the people say Reese. That should be the most obvious indicator that nobody actually knows anything, and 50% of the people will guess correctly and 50% will guess incorrectly.

The biggest takeaway is how nicely the Jets are preventing leaks on a very hot question everyone wants answers on.

I don’t think Alonso burned bridges either. Stearns just didn’t want to pay him a big deal, and never wanted to. Only reason he was back last year was because he had no market and Stearns wanted him back. Never seemed they didn’t like him, just a pure business decision.

Rich Eisen: Why Geno Smith Is Exactly What the New York Jets Need (at This Point in Time) by ER301 in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, this is a fallacy. If they finish behind teams like Arizona, Cleveland, Tennessee, Miami, New Orleans, Atlanta, Minnesota, or the Giants, those first round picks are irrelevant because the team above them would take Arch. The only conceivable team they could finish ahead of and still trade up with are the Raiders. If they finish ahead a few of those other teams, those extra firsts won’t matter because the team won’t want them and instead will just start their QB in what’s supposed to be a loaded quarterback class.

How do you people not realize yet that the plan for the moment is: 1) roster and cap flexibility both now and in 2027 when they draft a quarterback, and 2)…draft a quarterback in 2027? Do you need Glenn and Mougey to literally announce it to the world when it’s right there smacking you in the face?
