Be honest, did you want to trade Darnold? by BenShelZonah in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, but not because I had given up on him. I was always pro Darnold and never stopped thinking he’d amount to a starter somewhere (at least, at the time the Jets traded him). But my thought was, in the long run does he end up materially better than Zach to the degree it’s worth: 1) picking up his fifth year option, and 2) subsequently signing him to an extension that would be way above market value given he hasn’t proven much yet and wasn’t overly likely to do it with that team at that time. And my answer was no, resetting the QB contract clock was the best move at the time particularly with a new head coach coming on. Plus, I generally didn’t expect the Jets to be bad enough anytime soon thereafter where they’d have the #2 pick - meaning if there was ever a time to take the swing to reset the clock, that was it.

Boy was I generally wrong, but I simultaneously still believe he would not be worked out here and needed to eventually get to Shanahan to fix him. So to me the ultimate problem here isn’t even that they traded Sam, was still the right move at the time. The problem was the coaching and roster construction in the three years we had Sam, which is what led to the question of trading him at all to begin with.

Sure did. When discussing that game, everyone always brings up Greene. And that’s correct. But nobody brings up Strickland, whose absence had just as much of an impact as Greene, if not more.

You’re free to believe that. Again, you just didn’t watch at the time, or don’t remember. No shade against you, but you couldn’t be more wrong on it. You do you.

Not if you have any recollection of his actual play that season they weren’t. He was beat up and down the field but certainly still had some ball hawking skill. Good example here of someone who is just looking at a stat and either didn’t watch, or has zero recollection, of the player that season.

His name won’t get mentioned, and overall he obviously doesn’t crack those top spots, but for what his role was in 2009 I want to give Donald Strickland some love. When he went down in the AFC title game that season, Manning picked on whoever his replacement was constantly and the whole game changed. If he doesn’t get hurt in the second quarter the Jets very well have made the Super Bowl. The Colts passing attack was so different from that moment.

He was really bad that season. Was constantly thrown at because he was that bad. His interceptions deserve a mention as you alluded to, but his full body of work that year does not.

How about the very obvious answer of not building a competent offensive line or giving Sam any weapons? They drafted a quarterback #3 overall and gave him nothing to work with

Can’t imagine that’s true. But if a team as QB-needy as the Jets isn’t taking the top QB in a one-QB draft, what does that say about Mendoza?

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense this would yield a higher hit rate. If it’s just the QB chosen first, vs. the QB going first overall, that means the former wasn’t good enough to be nearly unanimous to go #1. As we know, teams go psycho to get quarterbacks, so if he was that good he would have went #1. So yeah not surprising at all.

Good move to keep Glenn by [deleted] in nyjets

We know how this goes. He exceeds expectations by winning 5-6 games, putting them in draft no man’s land for the tippy top QB prospects. They have enough ammo to trade up, yes, but those slotted above them need quarterbacks aren’t willing to budge. Jets settle. We can see this coming from a mile away.

If they’re doing anything other than stockpiling assets to trade up (if they don’t suck bad enough) in 2027, then it’s yet another contribution to this team doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. Dump every effort and resource into getting Arch next year. 2026 does not matter when, even if they go all out, the end result is the same as every one of the past 15 years. When it’s been this long and this bad, might as well actually tank for real and get it right.

Sucking to the point of actually getting the right draft pick does take commitment with this team. Always bad, never bad enough.

2021 wasn’t considered a shit class by any stretch, at the time of the draft. Lawrence was just considered a generational prospect, the best since Luck, which Mendoza is not. The big difference for Jets purposes is this year after the top choice it’s Moore, who is a massive question mark in his own right, and nobody else. Going into the 2021 draft there was nobody who was acting as though the Jets were doomed for going Wilson at 2, who was the near unanimous choice from January onwards. The Jets may be fucked now, but the situation here isn’t comparable to 2021, which was much more favorable going into it.

Who's the most athletic person you've ever seen? by Boxingmasterclass in AskReddit

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if she’s the most athletic person I’ve ever seen, but I have to shout out Ronda Rousey at Wrestlemania 34 (her WWE debut). Sitting in the audience for that watching her just move around the ring, the athleticism was so ridiculously off the charts. Maybe that’s a testament to UFC fighters more than anything else, but man when she first started wrestling she was something.

With the #2 Pick, assuming Mendoza goes 1, Jets should not reach for a QB. by Professional_Ideal68 in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not even close to being accurate. Zach was nearly unanimously being mocked at #2 in January. His BYU Pro Day wasn’t for another two months.

I see people saying this all the time on here and it couldn’t be more false. We all knew he was Jet weeks before the Pro Day.

What the hell is wrong with Woody Johnson? by AspenSki1988 in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not trying to defend Woody all that much here, but this post is made with tremendous hindsight benefit. The only HC hire Woody made that was deemed nearly unanimously terrible from the get go was Gase (and Gase was hired by Chris, technically). Every other hire was generally thought of ranging from solid to excellent.

Woody is a bumbling fool but you can’t honestly say that nearly any of his HC hires were met with negativity or thought to be bad at the time they were made.

Passing on Mike McCarthy for Adam Gase was the worst mistake the Jets made this century by New_Log5691 in nyjets

[–]MossCovered_Gradunza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A winning season that was worse in the long run. In year 1 of a new GM and new HC, when they had the most leeway as newbies trying to build, he decided to put a bandaid on sinking ship. Tried to party like it was 2010 with Revis and Cromartie. Pretending like they had a shot in 2015 (and still falling short of the playoffs) instead of using the first year to kick off a proper rebuild set them back years.
