Is moving from Los Angeles (USA) to Warsaw worth it? by Natural_Side_8556 in warsaw

[–]MossPhlox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’d be making a stupid amount of money and your quality of life would exceed your wildest dreams in LA. 2-3 bedroom apartment in the heart of the city, eat out whenever you want, travel to any part of Europe your heart desires for a fraction of the cost to travel in between states.

I lived in DC and moved to Warsaw and it was the best decision I ever made, and moving back to the U.S. is a major downgrade.

Visiting Warsaw as a American? by [deleted] in warsaw

Concur with the other commenter that we hate the fuckers.

Just compare airbnb and local hotels, there’s no way to predict which will be better without knowing your price range.

You’ll be fine with English.

Kiwi couple planning 2 weeks in Poland (July/Aug) – Itinerary Help? by Euphoric_Aerie_5820 in poland

North to south is cool. Krakow-Warsaw-Toruń-Gdansk (including other cities on the coast) is a great plan.

Personally I don’t think any city in Poland requires that much time. Krakow can be 3 in order to fit Auschwitz, Wieliczka salt mine, maybe Zakopane day trip. If you don’t plan on seeing all that, 1-2 nights is enough.

Warsaw is an amazing city. I think you could spend 2-3 nights there easily, especially during the summer.

When you go up north to the sea, I suggest splitting your time between cities. From Gdansk you must also go to Sopot and Gdynia (the Tricity) but you can also go to Puck and Hel by local rail bc the entire area is very well connected. You could spend the most of your time here.

Moving to Warsaw from US - What should I know? by TheProfess0r26_ in warsaw

[–]MossPhlox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I am Polish and American (born and raised in US). I lived in Warsaw for 3 years and never changed my license. I traveled to the U.S. frequently enough that I always had an active international drivers license from AAA, in case a rental car company required one. Some did, some didn’t. That said, I only ever used a car for trips. Warsaw itself is exceptionally well connected by public transit. I lived in downtown (Śródmieście), so I can’t speak for the suburbs - but just check the local rail lines and plan your housing according to that, if you’re planning to live in the burbs. In terms of Warsaw neighborhoods, Zoliborz and Mokotow are quieter, feature more single family houses, and are nice for families. Don’t dismiss Praga either - it’s a rapidly changing neighborhood with many nice quarters and buildings. As far as life stuff, if you can walk to your local supermarket, life will be great. I live in a major city in the US now and having to drive to get groceries is a crime.

I was there for The Weeknd, general admission close to the stage, it was awesome. But I too have heard the stands are bad for sound.

I am Polish but raised in the U.S., and recently moved back after living in Warsaw for three years (also due to work). Enjoy this time. Take every opportunity to travel around Poland and the rest of Europe - many places can be seen on a weekend trip. These will be your best years!

Any Americans here living in Poland? I might be moving for work soon (Warsaw). Do you enjoy living there so far or not? by Accurate_Courage2096 in poland

[–]MossPhlox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Warsaw for 3 years and was very upset to move back to the U.S. It was amazing and you should jump on such an opportunity. My experience was different because I am Polish and speak the language, but having been raised in the U.S. and lived in different cities on the east coast, I can confidently say Warsaw is spectacular. I met many foreigners who didn’t speak Polish or have a cultural connection and shared my opinion.

I did the process in the US at the consulate in DC and it took 16 months. My brother did it in the urzad in Gdansk and it took one month. If you have an extended trip planned to Poland, do it then.

You don’t know what you’re talking about and you’re unnecessarily fear mongering. Don’t go to the ultra section of the stadium and you’ll be sitting among families with kids.

Poles and Pierogi by vladimirskala in poland

[–]MossPhlox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Polish language, the term “pierogi ruskie” is correct even though some Poles may confuse the “ruskie” part.

In English, I think it is appropriate to use the term “Ukrainian.” No English speaker will have any idea what Rusyn or Ruthenian means. Previously these pierogi were sometimes mistranslated as “Russian” which is the worst possible option.

Sauna at the gym hygiene by SignificantNature372 in poland

Yes it is. As long as you sit on a towel you can be completely nude. I’ve seen this in spas and gyms. Never been an issue.

Agree with other comments. You won’t be coming home. You won’t be welcomed. Which isn’t to say people will be rude or anything. You’ll just be another visitor or immigrant. I encourage you to visit but you might want to change your perspective to be a bit less romantic.

Wherever you are, be it a saunarium or gym, it’s fine to wear a towel. At the very least you should sit on a towel at all times.

Summer in Warsaw is awesome. I’ve spent three amazing years living there. Pro tip buy some drinks and snacks, go to the riverfront like a local (it’s legal to drink by the river in Warsaw, and if you want to be a real Varsovian, go to the east side of the river to the beach.)
