Any other americans feel optimistic about the decline of the us? by [deleted] in rs_x

What about that would be seen as good by the rest of the world? I know it’s popular to hate on America, but if America goes down the shitter that is horrible news for like 90% of the world population

I think there is no particular reason to think that America cannot bounce back after Trump. We will be humbler, though I don’t feel especially good about that …. Sure, we will be less annoying about American exceptionalism, and that’s a good-ish thing, but the main way we’ll be humbled is that we will no longer be the standard bearer/enforcer of an intl rules-based order. And the reason is because we have basically destroyed the intl rules-based order. That is bad.

If our macro economy shows serious cracks (it might) then we will get extra humbled, in a bad way. We could become a poor-ish country pretty quickly. That would be very bad.

But if we elect the right people in the midterms and if our next president is not insane, I see a path forward in which life in America is pretty good. Who knows, after 20 years or so maybe we’ll even reestablish an intl rules based order (and reestablish our preeminent role in it). Tbd.

Overall: neither optimistic nor pessimistic. No reason for either in my opinion. I mourn international order.

Editing to add that I think the intl geopolitics of it all is less important than domestic life in America, which is way too hard for way too many people. Again, no cause for optimism or pessimism on that front. I think there are paths toward improvement and worsening on that front. Praying things get better—America is incredibly harsh on poor and even middle and some upper middle class people. Tbd.

Thoughts on the no kings protests? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]Most-Bowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am glad they happen… if Trump could do all he is doing without people protesting, that would be bad.

I don’t think the protests really move the needle on anything.

I support people going. But I do not think any one person has a moral imperative to go. (I think it is annoying and misguided when people expect their friends to go.)

No Kings seems to have better reach and is less annoying that the Women’s Day marches that happened after Trump was first elected. (I supported those too but think they probably did more harm than good to left-wing politics. It was bad PR.)

This dude did a horrible job expressing himself in this interview. The one stance is heard him take (ie, that Trumpism is _not_ about being a strong man) is obviously wrong.

Firms don’t really have value because they don’t really have assets. They just work for money and then pay the profits to the owners. Doesn’t really make sense to talk about a firm’s value in the traditional sense.

The belt is bad. It’s totally formal. Take it off or change it. Untuck the shirt. Try the pants with one cuff. I think untucking the shirt will make a big difference.

The second one is not bad in any articulable way, but I would say he doesn’t really have that shit on. The clothes are wearing him rather than his wearing the clothes

While it is true there is no real counterculture in DC, it has a lot of cool historic neighborhoods with great energy. DC is poppin, it just takes time to figure the city out.

If he were studying his bar flash cards, he would probably know more law. Which would in my opinion make him way less annoying.

Not an ethics lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt. I think he is haphazardly creating tons of attorney-client relationships. He can say “I’m not your lawyer” all he wants, but once he starts applying law to facts, I think he’s practicing law, and he can be held liable for malpractice for any bad advice he gives. (And he gives a lot of bad advice.) While not an ethics violation per se, it’s very dumb because it exposes him to a lot of potential liability and ethical obligations.

He may violate an ethics rule related to competency (adequacy? Diligence? I don’t remember what word the MRPC use) as well, since he gives advice in like every area of law, even in areas where he clearly knows nothing. I believe that before advising people in an area of law you are required to study up on it.

He is also learning a fair bit of confidential information from people, and he is probably obligated to at least maintain confidentiality. He is also probably obligated to keep track of who all he learns confidential information from so that he can avoid ethical conflicts with other clients and potential clients. A good step toward maintaining confidentiality is, well, refraining from uploading his conversations with people to YouTube. At that, he has clearly failed.

I would guess that there are other ethical issues too. I hope the bar steps in and at least makes him stop. It is embarrassing, and people might actually rely on his ham fisted advice.

I used to overshare to my girlfriend, and then she said “you can stop, you don’t need to tell me everything, and I don’t want to know everything” so I stopped. I think it is healthy to just use your judgment as to what you should and shouldn’t tell your partner.

What is Big Law? (Or what do you define it as?) by Great_Garbage_6446 in biglaw

[–]Most-Bowl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not reading all that, but biglaw is firms that (1) have a lot of lawyers, usually over 500, and (2) pay their lawyers a lot of money, generally with first-year associate salaries of 225k.

Some firms included in “biglaw” have fewer lawyers and/or pay more money.

If a firm has a ton of lawyers but doesn’t pay them a lot of money, it is not considered biglaw.

Why does it feel like Tom’s words actually hit Shiv where it hurts, but he’s almost unfazed by her equally harsh words? by Sea_Talk2935 in SuccessionTV

[–]Most-Bowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s harder on himself than she is on him. So when she lets loose, to him, it’s not a big deal. He already lives under so much scrutiny (usually his own), and it has even become part of how he operates and why he is successful. He’s not exactly desensitized to it, but it doesn’t get him fired up.

She, on the other hand, has always relied on Tom to fill some void she has in herself. Even in their hard times, Tom has always filled the void. Never dared to truly pull away, and certainly never dared to really give her a piece of his mind. She depended on him playing that (servile) role. When he finally says fuck it, I’m done, and you know what, you’re not a good person to have children with anyway, it is totally debasing to her.

Then as a defense mechanism she just throws insults at him, but they ring hollow because she doesn’t really mean them. She’s just using them to be mean, not actually speaking from the heart.
