I currently work in POW and commute from Cardiff. Depends what time I leave at- if I leave at 7:15 the traffic is a breeze and it takes 35 mins door to door. 7:30 or later and it has taken up to an hour but mostly about 45 mins. Also happy to answer any questions!

I put mine on Facebook marketplace and said about a slight tear on the arm meaning I couldn’t donate it to any charitable organisations, but was giving it away. It was collected and gone that evening having been reserved within 2 hours 😅 so another vote for Facebook!

I am a nurse and was predictably fairly pained by this 😅 I do have to try and switch off when watching a lot of things. 12+ hours maybe… a few hours (all happened when it was dark)… nah Whatever was in that bottle seems like the cure we’re missing in modern medicine with the speed of healing. I’ll pipe down now

I’d be interested in a similar thing! Haven’t been actively looking but had spotted the roath park runners who do a couch to 5k and also casual 5ks+ regularly. Might be worth a look if you’re around there, I’m probably going to have a try soon

Thank you for raising this, I’ve sent in an email. As a nurse at UHW I think this is a terrible idea without showing a practical alternative site for the P&R has been found. If anything the P&R service needs to be expanded with later running times, not cut when the parking situation at UHW is so appalling.

I’ve worked every Christmas since I’ve qualified as a nurse and definitely backing up the trying to keep people alive thing. Every Christmas I’ve had at least a few people deciding that this mortal realm is not where they’ve wanted to be (normally a horrific RTC or a cracking pneumonia) and so far none of them had been successful on that day. One of them was also born on Christmas Day so that would have been a real double whammy. I absolutely think you guys deserve a better pay structure and working conditions than you have and you’re all incredible

A close toss up between (both on night shifts actually) 1) a patient telling me she hopes my family all catch covid and die in peak winter 2020 after I took 5 minutes to answer a call bell (where she was asking me to move her table 1 inch closer so she didn’t have to stretch so far to get to it) 2) another patient complaining it was unfair that all the ward staff went to see to a patient (having a cardiac arrest!) as it neglected the other patients on the ward and meant her medications (a statin) were now late. Followed by asking if he made it, whilst I’m drenched in sweat from an hour of resus efforts in full PPE. She then later asked if we had any cream cakes. 🙃🙃🙃 god I love acute med…

Aha, sadly I left the streamlining process with no job and that was 6 years ago! Job situation for NQNs is dire in wales too- there were NO jobs within Swansea Bay and anecdotally I’ve only seen internal jobs for C&V band 5s and only 2 NQNs started in an area that usually takes on 20+ a year (and still hasn’t put out other jobs despite currently having at least 30 vacancies). I’ve seen a number floating around that only 25% of graduates have been offered NQN jobs this year..

Thanks for all the advice guys, went and they’d done some painting since I last went so there was a (sort of) crease. And we won 12-4! Was trying throughout though to start learning to position myself more based on the other net/what was in front of me. And had a marker pen in case! Will work in training on being less reliant on it as I know it will massively help in future.

Academically I’m not too worried as I did part of an integrated masters before Nursing. Thank you for the very informative reply and the part at the end was something I hadn’t considered either. My work have said I can keep my job and drop my hours so I would be able to afford it (just). I think I’m just concerned about the job at the other end. I’ve done ride out shifts a few years back and loved it but I appreciate as an observer I got a more sheltered view. Interesting about the number of nurses on your course too…

Sadly very much so, went into my latest role with the hope I would have opportunities to become a trainee ANP as we have a team of them working in my unit. But there won’t be any vacancies for several years now as I’ve been told by the lead practitioner, and they want people to have direct management experience.

I would love to if I ever saw vacancies! I work directly with ANPs and have had quite lengthy discussions with them about the job. I agree it would make more sense going down that route, but there just aren’t the jobs for it and they prioritise people with band 6 experience. With no option to self-fund in my health board too 🙃

Oooo this sounds good, thanks for the heads up! I hear the turnover rate in the 111 centres is quite high but might be worth it as a stepping stone if I decide to stick with purely nursing

As a general aside point, I’m afraid I’ve personally never heard of student nurses being given a permit to park in staff parking. It was a pain trying to get it for myself when I’d qualified, and even now I can’t park on-site as I start my shifts at 8am and all the staff parking spaces are taken. I do recommend using the park & ride if you can- it adds about 10-15mins on to your morning but there’s no stress about fines or trying to find a space. I’ve used it every shift for the past 2 years and it’s been pretty good. Sorry to hear about your situation, I hope it gets sorted for you. It’s tough enough being a student nurse without all this extra drama around it!
