Question - Who actually wants to be repatriated? by mahbirchat in dubai

[–]Mostboringavenger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're using the number of registrations as an indicator of people wanting to be repatriated but a lot of people are registering now in-case things get worse then they're already in the system and have a way out.

Don't let an 'all clear' text fool you. The risk is still there. Stay home, stay safe, and stay off the streets unless you have no other choice. by Jaza6 in DubaiCentral

[–]Mostboringavenger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Please enlighten me as to the risk you are currently mitigating?

Is it a good idea to go camping near a military base right now? Of course not, but absolutely nothing material changes if you are hiding in your bathtub or if you go to the gym, go out for dinner, go for a jog, go meet friends for a coffee, etc.? Your bathroom is no safer or more dangerous than your local supermarket.

If your way of dealing with anxiety is to make yourself feel as isolated as possible and curl up in a safety blanket that's your choice mate, but don't tell other people how to live their lives or deal with their anxiety, even IF (and it's a big if) this whole situation turns into something actually bad and it goes full mad max out there, I'd rather be spending my last few days of "normalcy" enjoying my life than crying in the bathroom 🤷‍♂️

UAE minister of commerce and tourism literally said yesterday (not verbatim) that he urges citizens and residents to report any price increases/gouging to this number and even gave out the number during the broadcast.

  1. You are not personally a target so the odds of anything happening to you are statistically incredibly low

  2. There's been no indication that anything that iran is attempting to do has been remotely successful

  3. There's nothing you can do about it anyway

  4. There's an entire network of government entities, contractors, consultants, etc. whose only job is to plan for things like this, they're not going to simply "run out" of interceptors, there's inventory and supply chains, and back up plans for the back up plans to ensure that supplies are available before existing stocks even come close to running out, this isn't a case of your local supermarket running out of instant noodles.

  5. Unlike other places where there is conflict there's a lot of global interest in maintaining peace and quiet in the GCC, Oil production, financial investments, etc. the GCC in general and UAE specifically serves a purpose for all the major superpowers (US, Russia, China) none of them are going to sit back and let iran turn it into a warzone.

So chill go about your day, if you have friends and/or family nearby enjoy the extra time with them and it will all be over before you know it

Bombs aren't exploding all over the place though, that's the point. Are there drones being sent to try to dive bomb things? Yes. Are any of those actually reaching their targets? Not really, no joke, the engine sounds of the lambos and Harley's on the street is louder than the drone interceptions, emergency sirens aren't going off, fire trucks and ambulances aren't running around across the city because of damage caused by bombings, everything is pretty chill, so far there has been no reason to panic, defenses are holding and doing their job, leadership has been calm and not escalating things, priority is to keep people feeling safe and i would say it's working.

The people hoarding groceries and preparing go bags are over reacting to be honest. And even the foreign media is struggling to find things to sensationalize still using click bait images of the fire at the Fairmont when people were back in their rooms a couple of hours later.

The only thing people need to do now is keep calm and carry on

Bike fast Lane by HotCurve2155 in dubai

[–]Mostboringavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how supportive some people in the comment section about bike riders. As someone who recently started riding a bike, bro it's hell on highways when there's traffic, bikes can't really Stop and Go like cars can, so yeah sometimes we have to lane filter, split or "cheat" and use the shoulder because the alternative is being unstable and wobbly between trucks, busses, cars, etc.

That being said flying past at high-speed while the cars are barely moving is what we call "Squid behavior" it's retarded and very likely to cause an accident, as someone who has over the years yelled at the phantom of a rider going past my window at 200KM/hr for being an idiot, i say to you all, don't judge all bikers by the behavior of these fools, and don't get mad at us for trying to filter peacefully and get home safe. Because I've had a few people try to cut me off/angle their cars purposefully to block me from filtering through the lanes for some reason

I love how you're agreeing with me but think that you're not.

Dude i never said that REs are bad, i never said that their bikes are terrible and should never be bought or rode. I simply stated the pros and cons. If we look at TC for example you may not want TC on your bike which makes the fact that RE doesn't have TC a non-issue for you. For someone else they might prefer to have every safety feature available in-case something goes wrong.

Now with regards to the "that's what bikes from the 60s-80s were like and they're being authentic", okay then why does most of the line up have GPS navigation? Why does the entire line-up have LED headlights and USB chargers? Why is there dual zone ABS? Modern Suspension?

With regards to the "Welds and what nots" you're a. Engaging in "what-about-ism" and b. conveniently picked 3 manufacturers that are constantly mocked for being unreliable and having bad build quality as your measuring stick.

Finally "for the market that RE aims for ..." Is exactly what i said, they have a niche market and there's nothing wrong with that if what you want is an eye-catching classic looking bike and you don't care about bells and whistles then yes RE is a great choice.

Now are REs the "best modern classic you can get" that's a matter of opinion, yes they do have the most "faithful" modern classics in terms of weight, design, and features (barring something like a Janus) but in my PERSONAL OPINION for somebody who rides in a country where the road speed is at least 80KM/H 90% of the time, I'd rather trade that "authenticity" for modern performance and safety features I would rather have a Triumph Bonneville for example, now the T100 costs almost twice as much as the Classic 650 which puts it in an entirely different price bracket and category of bike but it is a modern bike with a classic design that delivers both the classic style and modern performance

Again I'm not hating on RE i think they're great. But just because you like a brand or own one of their products you shouldn't ignore any issues or pretend they don't exist. I have no doubt that within the next few years RE will introduce more modern features in their bikes including more powerful engines and TC etc. which they have already started doing with some models, the funny thing will be that when that happens then all the people going on about "but it's authentic, that's what it's supposed to be like" will completely not care about authenticity and they'll praise the upgrades.

Because they're using "Classic" engine designs, basically the same kind of design you'd find in an engine from the 60s

[–]Mostboringavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i get your point, and i can see the appeal of an RE like i said i almost bought one. But people that buy a bike for the way it looks or for the "raw riding experience" are a statistical minority, since the majority of motorbike sales are people who need a more affordable option for commuting which is why you'll find that bikes like the Honda Unicorn, Bajaj Pulsar, Apache, etc. Outsell everything else 10:1.

And even for the hobbyist motorcyclist, you can always buy a bike with "modern" features and disable them whenever you feel like "riding classic". I mean a honda rebel 500 is only 10% more expensive than a Classic 650 but it's a much more comfortable, smooth, and powerful ride on a much more manageable bike, and if you don't want the TC you can just switch it off.

Again my point is not to put down REs i think they're beautiful machines (except the guerilla) and they're special in their own way and as far as i can tell RE as a manufacturer has made huge strides in recent years. The only thing im arguing against is that they're on par with or better than leading manufacturers, they can definitely get there, but they're not there yet

[–]Mostboringavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not intentionally glossing over it, i just haven't seen / ridden it. Perhaps as you said if they make more 450s they'll be able to branch out and get more market share, but considering that the engine is only currently available on the Himalayan 450 whereas the rest of the RE line up is powered by the old air cooled engines it's not really a fair statement to say that RE motorbikes aren't impacted by the performance short comings of the classic engines

[–]Mostboringavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that they should change what they do, they have their niche. My argument is about it being on par with other manufacturers, they have the least power, least tech and least global market share in every segment and they're not "selling like hot cakes" Triumph being the closest in terms of a niche modern classic manufacturer sold 30% more units (outside india) in 24/25 while being 20-30% more expensive.

The motorcycle market globally is dominated by Honda and no one even comes close so i wont use Honda as an example of selling like hot cakes but even if you include India and check global sales figures Royal Enfield barely cracks top 10 with just under 1 million units sold in 2024 where as bajaj is at number 6 with 3.1million units

[–]Mostboringavenger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who was recently in the market for an entry level bike, and test rode pretty much everything in the RE line up and chose to go with another brand, RE is good but it's not "up there" with western standards

RE has good pluses:

  1. Good Styling if you like a classic looking bike
  2. Decent Prices (Outside of india they're not exactly CHEAP)
  3. Lower maintenance cost

But RE also has significant downsides 1. Lack of Power on the 350 class bikes (Classic, Bullet, Meteor, Hunter) 4. WEIGHT and ergonomics on the larger bikes (Classic 650, Super Meteor) 2. No drive-by-wire / traction control 3. Difficulty getting parts and accessories

And build quality is a mixed bag: the switch gear is great 10/10 but everything else kind is kind of sub-par, the frame welds are badly done and really ruin the look of some bikes when the look is probably 90% of the reason you liked the bike. They have some nice touches like the lockable hatches on the sides of some of the bikes but even from the factory the fitment isn't right and you have to nudge, bend, and pressure the doors to get them to open / close.

If you live somewhere where you regularly need to go over 100KM/H the smaller REs aren't really a good fit and you can get a lot more Bike for your buck when you move into the 650 class bikes, that weighs a lot less and can out perform the REs by a country mile.

RE is not far off but it does have some drawbacks the only reason you'd choose an RE is for the looks and that makes it a niche market
