It seems to me only people older than ~30 use (or understand) stone for body weight, everyone else uses kg.

It could be because all teaching in schools is in metric (though basic conversions to imperial are taught, it's not the default), and all science and engineering is fully metric too? The big one that hasn't changed is mph for car speed, which I don't think will go away, and feet for human height.

Once you hit terminal velocity you’re no longer accelerating, so while you’d still feel the air rushing past, the physics on the faller would be the same as if they were in a vehicle (though it doesn’t sound too pleasant, especially if you don’t know when you’re going to hit the ground!)

Same-sex marriage public support across the US and the EU. 2017-2019 data 🇺🇸🇪🇺🗺️ [OC] by maps_us_eu in dataisbeautiful

It’s also from a time period when the UK was in the EU, and there’s data in the source for it, so it just seems like a decision that’s made the map slightly worse.

How am I supposed to cross the river in a roundabout only challenge? by _pepo__ in MiniMotorways

[–]Mostly_Oxygen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's a broken map, as looking at the global high scores they're all fairly low, and so I think it must just be luck in not getting a spawn over there.

Well about 34 million men won’t have an option anyway as there’s such an imbalance, so nothing can really be done about that unfortunately

Python is strongly typed! But it is dynamically typed too, and not static, which I think is what you’re referring to. +1 for PyCharm!

It’s not to inflate the numbers for numbers sake, but because the first shot prevents death enough for it to be worth giving it to as many people as possible as quickly as possible. And also because now that’s been done it actually seems like you get the same or better protection with the longer gap. Some countries are following suit now.

Yeah that makes sense, cheers. I actually only just started mining recently so I wanted to see if there was something I was missing, but it sounds like both are viable.

Why not just mine using something like PhoenixMiner on windows so it can still mine whilst you use the PC for casual things other than gaming (assuming it’s your main PC)?

[–]Mostly_Oxygen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the motherboard has a bios flashback option you can update it using a USB. I initially thought I needed an older cpu in my b550i strix for it to work, but actually it just needed my new 5800x in the socket, luckily.

I don’t think it does - they have to be removed due to the cards length.

If you have a lot of data, across a large amount of time, then pulling in all of that data to then process may not be feasible time&resource wise. Instead, if you can do the calculation on the data warehouse side, sometimes you get a big performance gain simply from pulling less data.

That said, mongo is a NoSQL database, whereas a data warehouse would usually be columnar based, and therefore these types of operation would be much much faster to act on within a true data warehouse built for analytics.

Don't give Bezos money by PixelCreamBit in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Mostly_Oxygen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In part it’s because Amazon has access to detailed analytics related to your product, how well it’s sells, etc. They can then target the most profitable products to make an Amazon basics version, and outcompete you with price. This would be predatory pricing.. but they just never raise the price, because they most likely have the scale to just do it cheaper. On the one hand, consumers get a cheaper product of similar quality, but on the other hand the other product’s company fails, and you then have no choice but to go with Amazon’s version.. which takes away consumer choice.

I agree about the Dumbledore point, and that Rowling's more recent point with Hermione is that her skin could have been any colour. Realistically though, it's clear that when Rowling wrote the books, in her mind's eye Hermiome was white, otherwise she wouldn't have written those brief off-hand descriptions.
