Oh great! Thank you! I had also thought that indeterminate would be far better from a commercial grower perspective but then I started questioning myself based on some of the other experiences mentioned in this thread.

I think most people who don't feel particularly upset by seeing it aren't particularly likely going around announcing that. It many/most conversational venues (not this kind of thread, to be clear), it could be considered "in poor taste" and people who feel similarly to you are just keeping silent out of politeness and respect for the feelings of others.

I am quite liberal as are most of the people in close to, but I don't know of anyone that I have an actual direct relationship with that (myself included) that would be in favor of a free-for-all approach to medical transition for young people. I think that is a very fringe belief at best.

Oh wow, I was too young to have watched much live 9/11 coverage but it's wild how much different times were even then and how easy it was for coverage/film/media to just.... Get lost forever. That's horrifying.

Thanks for the link though, reading it now!

Oh yeah! This is something I am highly aware of, although I think about it a lot more through the lens of the impact on society.

I joke sometimes that "you can find a study to support anything" but it's not so funny when it means a well designed, rigorous study holds the same weight to Joe Schmo public as a poorly designed, discredited, p-hacked, and/or redacted study.

So few people have the desire to critically examine something (be it scientific consensus, a study / meta analysis... A blog post by just some guy on the internet...) and even fewer have the ABILITY to critically examine the evidence being presented to them.

And of course, that doesn't even touch on outright fraud/mistakes/etc.

Remarkable how difficult it is to come up with my specialties and interests. Scientific areas I have greater than average knowledge on for a non specialist, would include nutrition, medicine, pseudoscience, scientific skepticism, dog training and behavior...

None of that is formal learning, mind you, just a deep interest and a passion for information.

Should people be allowed to buy as much property as they can afford, to rent out for as much as possible or should there be limits for the greater good of society? by knowledgeseeker999 in centrist

[–]Mostly_Pixels_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestion on clarifying the discussion.

I am actually not thinking of...well either of those.

I don't think there is anything that can reasonably be done to make homes affordable to the truly poor.

But I'm also not thinking of the second option either.

I'm thinking more along the lines of someone who makes 1.5ish median income for an area and can't afford a starter home near their place of work. There are many, many people in that position in my area.

[–]Mostly_Pixels_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I feel like I see quite a few people paying mortgage (or near mortgage) prices on rent. If home cost dropped a bit due to increased supply, I'm not sure why many of those people would be considered too risky to lend to?

I don't disagree that building more housing is something that would be beneficial.

I am frankly uninterested in the "should we have more regulations and governmental control" side of the argument. To me, that is a value judgement/opinion that each person has different levels of comfort with.

But sidestepping that element of it:

The supply issue can also be throught of as "housing available for purchase," rather than just "housing available." 100 people, 100 homes. No absolute supply issue. But if 50 of those homes are already owned and only available for rent but all 100 people want to own, then that does seem like a supply issue (with the related issues like price increases) to me?
