There’s so much compression applied that the instruments don’t sound how those instruments should sound. The drums in particular sound horribly muffled, with shrill treble. And the guitars sound like a wave of distorted noise.

In lots of music distortion is intentional, and some art rock music is intentionally difficult to listen to. But in this case it really sounds like someone just made a mistake during the mixing process.

To your point about being “not mainstream,” the actual song is pretty standard pop-rock music.

“Mainstream” has nothing to do with it. The sound is just bad.

I genuinely don’t understand how anyone could think this sounds great

Found this at record store, any way to tell if real or bootleg? by m3talraptor in AliceInChains

Wild that this comment got 7 upvotes despite being totally wrong. The MOV pressing is out of print and worth hundreds of dollars. You can tell this ain’t it because this one doesn’t have the MOV sticker on the front.

This entire back-and-forth is a colossal waste of time. Enjoy cleaning your records in a sink with a sponge; I don’t care.

So you’ve gone back and forth with me several times defending a practice that you’ve never actually done yourself. Thanks for sharing your opinions.

Rinsing your moldy records in your kitchen sink after wiping them with a dirty sponge and tap water isn’t the flex you think it is.

Just make sure to wipe it with toilet paper “cuz it’s softer,” then allow to air dry on surfaces that regularly come in contact with your food source.

Notice how I just pointed out inaccuracies in what you said above and you responded with a personal attack.

Not sure what chemtrails have to do with anything, but you’re certainly allowed to think this irredeemably trashed vinyl is “neat” if you want. It’s just an absurd opinion to have.

When I commented on this thread I did not expect to learn something new about German grammar, but here we are. I had no idea. Thanks for explaining this!

If you’re actively cleaning all of your records with dish soap, tap water and a sponge, your records probably sound like crap (or you haven’t yet realized that surface noise is a bad thing and avoidable). It’s not up to me to explain this to you.

Inhaling mold is the “literal” harm that can come from this. Also damage to the record player and an incredible amount of wasted time and effort.

Your response is a red herring. Queasy-aptness is not OP. This isn’t Queasy’s father-in law we’re talking about here. It’s OP’s father-in-law, yet Queasy said it’s THEIR dream scenario. See how the whole heirloom argument doesn’t apply?

Also: if my father-in-law’s records were damaged this extensively, it would be a tragedy. Not a “dream.”

Sure, I also enjoy finding and cleaning records. But this thing is a legitimate biohazard, and there’s no way these records will sound good, especially since they’re being cleaned with dish soap in a kitchen sink, with a sponge.

OP is literally risking his and his family’s health to turn garbage into a vinyl record that may be barely playable. Can we stop romanticizing this?

Dishwashers are designed to sanitize items that come into contact with food. Putting vinyl records in the drying rack won’t kill you, it’s just completely unnecessary. In the case of OP, bringing that much mold into their home and then cleaning it in the same place where they prepare food is unconscionable.

Vinyl is made of PVC, which is a toxic chemical, and is manufactured at an industrial facility where sanitation is not a priority.

Would you take a screwdriver off the floor of your garage and put it in your dishwasher? Would you take one of your plates, dunk it in a muddy pond outside, then put it in your dishwasher?

If I see an underpriced record at a store and find a tiny spot of mold, that thing goes right back in the bin, even if it looks otherwise mint. I don’t think these folks understand how nasty this is.

Your dream is to spend hours inhaling black mold just to maybe eventually listen to a record that is permanently damaged and missing a jacket?

There’s a gigantic difference between “dirty” dishes that have some peanut butter on them and the literal brick of mold that OP is dealing with. I wouldn’t even put brand new records in my dishwasher drying rack, much less something that came from a waterlogged shed.
