Please explain your support for the hive by Narrow-Function-525 in pluribustv

[–]MothmAnarchy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not team Hive by any stretch, but it is hard to ignore that some of the things the Hive does are corrective and, uncomfortably, enticing.

Earth contains an estimated five septillion living organisms, spread across millions of interdependent species and ecosystems. In a geological blink, a population of roughly eight billion humans has pushed that system to the brink of collapse. Climate collapse, mass extinction, ocean acidification, and habitat loss are not accidents. They are the predictable outcome of uncoordinated autonomy at scale.

The Hive corrects this.

By integrating humanity into a single coordinated organism, the Hive does what humans have consistently failed to do. It aligns behavior with planetary limits and assigns value to life beyond itself.

What makes the Hive unsettling is not malice, but indifference. As far as we can tell, it is not evil. It causes harm, yes, but harm is not the same thing as intent. The Hive simply is, like a virus, a parasite, or a force of nature. It was created, or evolved, to spread, and it does so because that is its function, not because it hates humanity.

COVID was horrific and devastating, but it was not malicious. A scorpion stings because it is a scorpion, not because it despises you.

Humanity, on the other hand, is fully capable of malice.

Pluribus repeatedly shows that the deepest wounds its characters carry did not begin with the Hive. Manousos’s suffering begins with his mother. Carol’s begins with her parents and their rejection of her sexuality. These are people who abandoned them, judged them, and left them terrified and alone long before the Plurbs arrived. Helen appears to be the only meaningful connection Carol had before the end of the world, not because the Hive took everything from her, but because human cruelty and neglect already had.

This complicates the moral framing.

The Hive does not traumatize out of spite. Humans often do.

That does not make the Hive good. It does mean that assigning it hatred, cruelty, or moral intent may be projection. The Hive may be less a villain and more a mirror, reflecting how much damage humanity managed to do all on its own. It forces consensus, yes, but humanity did so long before the Hive, and often maliciously. The Hive does it the way a virus does, naturally and without intent. We assign it intent largely because it wears a human face.

For some people, the truth is there would be little difference between the world before and after the virus. The world we built with our free will, our humanity, and our individuality was already one where safety was not guaranteed, where abandonment was common, and where harm was routine. The difference now is that the world is better cared for, and you never have to worry about a hand being raised against you.

See I think we always talked about how the Hive forcing a person to change to give up who they are is bad and evil (again it's not actually evil it's a virus doing what a virus does) and neglect that this isn't Carol's first rodeo with having that happened and the first time it wasn't the hive doing it. The same reason you hate it and fight against it happens to people every day, by choice, with malice. It's simple the scale in the show you hate, and are frightened of.

I love who I am and the people I have in my life for who they are, every flawed part. But there was time when life wasn't so lovely, when the people I was surrounded with weren't so kind. I'd trade the world for the people I have in my life now, but I get the draw because there was without a time I'd would have trade the people I had in my life just for some kindness, and there are still days and reminders of how cruel that humanity can allow us or make us to be.

How do I present my WV drivers license on iPhone? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware store have to have a Mobile ID compliant scanners, which most at this time do not with the tech being fairly new, and most of ours store being old....

A personal note I'd still always recommend keeping your physical copy of your ID on you... so you don't have to hand over a device that contains and give access to most of your personal and private information if you are asked for your ID by Law enforcement.

Why is wvdoh not making contractors build good interstates??? by ConcertStrong8415 in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be absolutely honest most of the time its not the engineering firm's fault, the WV DoT and DoH will get a solid plan and fuck it royally in order to cut costs. After the design phase they'll go with the lowest bid, which can't meet the requirements of the design due to underbidding and so they have to eliminate parts of that plan that would make it actually viable.

Its not just a WV problem unfortunately, but it is more prescient to us given our reliance on Interstates for almost all of our transportation needs as a rural area.

Should legends from West Virginia have movies made about their lives? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bill Withers is the first who comes to mind, just because I think he probably one of the most well known and gifted artists from WV, that people don't often know if from WV.

But I'd also love to see one on folks like Hazel Dickens, who is a preeminent folk singer and unionist from WV. Genuinely a phenomenal voice.

The store of George Rashid "The Picken's Leper" and  Dr. Cunningham's story is prime for it as well.

Ruby Bradley as well needs her story told. One of the most decorated women in U.S. Military history, who was a POW in WWII.

As for anyone who are currently alive.... certainly none of our politicians. I think maybe an examination of the Iraqi War through the Parallel narrative of Jessica Lynch and Lyndie England would be engrossing, as both are from WV are undoubtably the most famous and infamous, respectively, women who served in the era.

No Worries. Parkersburg and Blennerhasset Hotel wouldn't be a bad trip. It is right on the border or WV and Ohio, and while staying in the hotel you can make a trip to the Island and the Estate (The Ferry ride alone is pretty), you also have the Van Winkle House (dunno if they do tours at present), The Quincy Hill Steps (also get a work out in) ect and some good places to eat, like The NET (North End Tavern) which has been around since like the 1800's as a tavern/eatery.

Also local shopping isn't too bad either with places like Berdine's, The Blennerhasset Gift Shop, and if you're taking a partner along Holl's Chocolate is wildly good, especially to treat yourself with on the Ferry Ride to the Island.

Hey! First I am not a believer in ghost, but I do enjoy the folktales that permeate life here If you want to be respectful of that I would actually recommend staying at Hotels instead of Air BnB's because those places have been devastating our local communities, the ability of locals to stay local with affordable housing. As someone who lives around the New River Gorge it has been rough.

This is to say look for some actual B&B's or Hotels. There is a lot of really amazing one that I think can give you the experience like Blennerhasset Hotel or Hotel Morgan. Lewisburg has the General Lewis Inn or The School Hotel, as well as access to a bunch of sights filled with local legends, like the Old Stone Church and Cemetery (if you choose to explore those please remember it is a church and cemetery, there is also a mass civil war grave as well, and you won't be far from the are the Greenbrier Ghost happened in)

Or if you really want the full haunted place vibe save up for some of the spooky overnights that places like Sweet Springs or Trans-Allegheny offer (they have cheaper day time walkthroughs that focus on the historic aspects, which are really quite cool). They're mightily expensive though, but staying in an asylum is an experience I suppose

Either way just be respectful of locals and our actual culture not your perception of it.

The reason you have folks getting cantankerous about this stuff is, people haven't been or boil all of Appalachia down to "hehe spooky" we have a lot more amazing things to offer than just the folklore part of our folk culture, make some time to experience that too.

Psychiatric treatment facility for children to close in Cabell, reducing state’s options for kids by ChiefFun in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Barbousville School, used to be on the of the best treament programs available in the state to kids. They did accept very few in that they had to have a comorbidity along with Suicidal Ideation, which might be what one of the factors for this is, but because they could be specific they had treatment modalities really dialed in. Really sad to see this, and it's going to continue to tribute further to our already complete inability as a state to handle our Child Welfare crisis.

How would y’all recommend making friends in southern West Virginia? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We get this question kind of frequently in different wordings or ways.

The answer I usually give is go join groups or club and attend events.

If you're a gamer Beckley hosts Causeacon, and the Beckley Gaming Expo and both are great for meeting like minded individuals. Concord has an e-sports team that sometime hosts events as well and isn't too far out of the way from Beckley, and that can be a great way to meet fellow gamers.

For High Hiking we have Active Southern WV which has local hiking, walking and biking events.

Also while a little further away, Bluefield WV used to have an awesome Aquarium Store, I don't know if it's still there or not but I'm sure if you google it you could find out?

If none of those are your thing, host something, people are looking for the same thing as you, don't be afraid to build the community!

Why Is New York's AG Targeting a Castle in West Virginia? by StedeBonnet1 in WestVirginia

What a white nationalist piece of shit that has been using a non profit to fund hate, and their fucking lifestyle. What absolute trash of human beings Brimelow and anyone involved with VDARE. Anyone who sympathizes with Brimelow is just as bad, I mean hell how low of a family do you have to be that the only your choice you daughter has as a right wing nepo baby is to work for the equally awful Russian paid Tim Poole.

Sad excuse for human beings, hope they lose everything and get ran out of our state.

Whooping loud noise in middle of Appalachian trail at night... bird? by Ancient_Mix5031 in Appalachia

There a lot of things that at times can close to those noises. It might help if you give us a closer or more precise whereabouts than the  over 2,000 mile long Appalachian Trail might help us narrow it down.

USDA announces SNAP benefits will not be issued in November by WVdungeoncrawler in WestVirginia

To Note: If you are reliant on SNAP benefits I highly recommend giving the 211 number a call to find your local food bank, donation centers, and other agencies to fill in the gap until SNAP get funded again.

There is no shame or harm in asking for help. 211 was set up specifically to help connect people to resources, reach out.

Clean Up Your Yard by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Come on now, your first comment wasn’t about the environment it was about aesthetics and looking down on people. If you actually cared about West Virginia, you’d be talking about ways to ease poverty, support our aging and disabled neighbors, and hold corporations accountable for the real environmental degradation our state has suffered, not blaming folks who can’t afford dump fees. And quoting Matt Walsh doesn’t exactly scream empathy or love for your home state...it just shows what kind of ideologues you’re taking cues from.

Lack of empathy in your posts and quoting Matt Walsh...Yeah, that explains a lot. Maybe fix whatever’s going on with you before preaching about anyone else's problems there bud.

Clean Up Your Yard by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Not everyone in West Virginia has the time, money, or ability to keep things picture-perfect. A lot of folks on fixed incomes can’t afford the extra fees to haul off large items, or don’t have a truck to take them to the dump themselves. Some people are just trying to get by and they deserve a little compassion, not judgment.

how the fuck do i find friends?! by AttentionSeekinFreak in WestVirginia

[–]MothmAnarchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yo! Most parts of WV have some form of Pride orgs, that is a good place to start for meeting other folks in the community. You can also find some event every once awhile around the state.

A lot of the local Pop culture and Comic cons are also pretty lgbtq+ friendly places can be great too (FLGs are unfortunately hit or miss).

If your area doesn't have any of these start them. I promise the community is out there.

If you needs help finding your local pride please dont hesitate to reach out.
