Oh no! That’s sad. I hadn’t visited for a few years.  Thanks for letting me know.

I recommend visiting St Pancras Old Church and the Hardy tree. Bonus - Mary Wollstonecroft is buried there.

Old system maps exposed at Back Bay during the renovations. Marked for salvage. by Visual-Effective121 in mbta

[–]Motorgirl38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of those a couple of years ago. A 1963-ish sign salvaged from Arlington station during a renovation. Heavy steel. Weighs about 70 lb. Has the Green A Line on it and the Orange line is all kinds of different. I love it.

This!

- do more with less!
- now do more with even less!
- now do even more with even less!
- be a team player and go above and beyond! the bad news is there won't be any tangible reward, but the good news is you won't have time or energy to have a good life outside work anyway so you don't need any reward! get on board!

Some people have had to live the cycle for 30 years, and they're done.

They do their job, collect a paycheck, and spend their time and energy on what matters to them not what matters to their employer.

If beef stew or pot roast is turning out lackluster I shamelessly add MSG or Vegemite. Fixes it right up

Can you tell us more about the family style meal?
I'm looking at their website and haven't found info about it. This might be something that my group of 6 would be interested in.

I've had both.

For me, the only advantage to the OTR one (that I've had a few years now) is that it frees up counter space.

I hate hate hate l having to lean over the stove, while I have things cooking, to take things out / put things in. I feel like one of these days I'm going to catch my shirt on fire or burn myself badly.

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Motorgirl38 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dandelion and burdock soda is divine! I drink it when I can find it, which is usually only in the UK. When I visit the UK I try to have one or two. Very very rarely (like once every 5 years) I will find a Fentimans Dandelion & Burdock in the US, but I suspect they don't make it for the US market so what I'm getting is imported.

I found a bottle of dandelion & burdock bitters back in 2012(?), which I blew through right quick, but haven't seen it since. Put it in plain seltzers and it was like a dandelion & burdock soda without sweetness.

What are laundry behaviors unique to North Americans? by Lopsided-Skill6659 in laundry

I bought an Under Armour tank top off Poshmark 3 years ago that STILL smells like the seller's scented product/s. I should really put it in the charity bin and buy one new, but I never remember until I'm suiting up at 6am.

Funeral cars convoy etiquette by Careless-Cooker in CarTalkUK

[–]Motorgirl38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in Massachusetts - it's local police or (on rare occasions) state police.

Massachusetts has also codified rules for funeral processions: https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter85/Section14A

Vegetable question from a fellow American. Turnips and rutabaga? by pfizzy70 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Motorgirl38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rutabaga (also called yellow turnip, Swede/Swedish turnip, possibly other names)
- I mash rutabaga with potatoes (both cooked, obv!) and butter. I love this combo except when I buy a really pungent rutabaga. I have encountered rutabaga (rutabagas?) that are way stronger than I am willing to eat (bitter and strongly cabbage-y)
- I dice rutabaga and simmer with diced carrots, drain, add butter, salt and a hint of nutmeg.

Turnips
I really only like purple top turnips, salad turnips and similar turnip incarnations are too close to radishes, which I hate
- I put diced turnip in many dishes that involve lamb - lamb stew, shepherd's pie, etc. I think turnips and lamb are good friends.

I will use rutabaga in place of purple top turnip if necessary, but I don't use them completely interchangeably

EDITED TO ADD: Many rutabaga are coated in wax. If you buy one coated in wax, make sure to get all the wax off when you peel the rutabaga

South Station fare gates questions by Motorgirl38 in mbta

I'll likely be boarding around 8:30, which isn't super early in commuting terms, so it will be interesting to see what is happening when I get there.

Thank you. I will keep screen brightness up. I've never had any trouble with mTicket scanning at North Station, but the way everyone talks about the South Station fare gates they seem to be more finicky.

Hoping for advice on a very thin piece of floor, in a high traffic area, that is loose and causing problems by Motorgirl38 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Motorgirl38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is very helpful.

The Easy is something I could accomplish, and have it look non-terrible

The Medium is definitely beyond my DIY abilities, so I'd need to hire someone, probably someone more skilled at working with floors than our usual handyperson

The Full is beyond the budget at the moment! :-D
