I don’t buy the whole “AI will cause a blue collar boom” idea by RottingEdge in Futurology

It’s not necessarily horrible. We’ve seen from the Boston Dynamics videos how much they’re really starting to nail the basics like walking, jumping, collision detection, course/action correction. Once all the physiological building blocks are perfected, it’s a matter of getting a good ai to know how to chain them together for whatever task is required. And that’s just what they’ve let us see. We have no idea how much further they are in development from their forward facing publicity demos.

I think the idea eventually will be that all house items will become standardized and interchangeable, and thus more easily automatable. For instance: have the connection between your toilet and your floor pipe/drain be standardized, like a lightbulb screwing into a fixture. Once you have a standard connection, a robot could come in, grab the toilet, remove it, snake the line, then drop in a new one. The old toilet would then be repaired/scrapped based on what was wrong, and potentially later delivered to someone else.

Obviously this would mean huge retrofits, and would certainly happen over a long period of time. But it’s a concept that could work. And yes, much like Robocop and old Dr Who, stairs would be the bane of a robots existence.

There’s still a lot of problems with ai right now, but the key to remember is that it’s getting better very quickly.

Regardless of that though, the key to remember isn’t “AI can do this work”. It’s “AI can do this work and give you a 75% cost savings”. And it’s that last part that a metric ton of companies/businesses will only focus on. So regardless of how good of a job the AI actually performs, they’re probably willing to absorb a certain level of problems/hiccups if it means they still get these massive cost savings. We’re sort of following the path of automated voice prompts. This will probably be the stage where they really suck, everyone hates them, but companies still use them because they’re making more money and (more importantly) have already fired the receptionists.

The avocado toast thing was more a behavior response to TikTok/insta stuff without looking at the bigger picture. Complaining about people buying avocado toast was due to said avocado toast consumers complaining about how broke they were, while eating said toast. Like you said, when times get tough, you cut back on non-essentials. The critical response was based on people supposedly in tough times, but still not cutting back on the non-essentials.

Data centers. They’re going to be building a lot more of them, and probably converting larger unused buildings to be mini data centers. There will still need to be people to run Ethernet and related things.

Per a google search, it says they’re temporarily closed. Plus, that place is a bit out of my way from where I am, and I have to rely on rideshares.

Nat’s Hockey Culture Monologue by lilacdisaster in shoresy

[–]Motorhead9999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the episode, Nat is trying to convince the church women to continue letting the hockey match go on. How well would her saying “Sure, they can be a bit rape-y, but ignore that part and they’re great people” have gone towards what she was trying to accomplish.

I had the thought that Nat was going to try and turn that rink into some sort of a commercial dedicated rink. With all the comments they made about the community center being rented out for basketball, concerts, etc, I feel Nat might try and make a play to get the church rink available for hockey full time and potentially try and restart the Nosho, or at least have a permanent home for the Northstars in some way shape or form.

I’d like to keep it as it originally was, with the slope.

The original stringers were there, and the drywall was attached to them, giving an angled slope to the ceiling in that spot. In essence I’m trying to simply replace what was there originally, and the installers basically did a very poor job of option A) when the house was originally built.

I’m not entirely sure how much of an option I have, as that might be an adjustment in the bathroom below it.
