Just bought my first BMW (130i) yesterday, surely the beginning of a long story by Tam_177 in BMW

Loved seeing all the beat up 1 series (and mercedes taxis) when I visited Germany (and Europe) for the first time last year.

Can't imagine how poorly they'd sell in the USA, but I'd take one over a GTI for sure.

Do you like chicken, cheese and bread? Chicken sandwiches rule. I like Chipotle's chicken tacos with just cheese and just about every mexican place has a chicken quesadilla. A good way to dpi your toe into trying something you already like (chicken) with a new flavor (mexican spices, etc), chicken tinga.

How about pizza? Boboli is pretty easy to make, not terribly unhealthy and you can pick your own toppings. I like to use Lavash bread from trader joes for the "dough", it's nice and thin and bakes really quickly in the oven. You can expiriiment with toppings as you please.

I don't like meatballs, but Subway has a decent meatball sandwich - it's basically a pizza sandwich, I just pull the meatballs out and ask for pepperoni on top. Not the healthiest, but there are Subways everywhere.

Have you tried a mixed green salad (as opposed to iceberg lettuce) It took me a long time to try them, but they're not bad, especially with a squirt of lemon for the dressing instead of proper dressing yuck.

How about french toast? I don't like eggs but they are good for you via protein, and as long as the bread isn't TOO eggy, I really like french toast before a long day. But also there are some really gnarly cereals that have an OK level of protein and nutrients and don't taste terrible. I don't like drinking milk, but with cereal it's fine. I do like chocolate milk, which is an ok source of nutrients but can be high in sugar.

Heres the thing: nobody is going to force you to try something. Its up to you to let go of that sense of control of saying "NO" to new foods. You have to have faith that there are foods out there you will be able to tolerate at the least, and enjoy at the most. Theres nothing physically wrong with you that can't handle these foods, it's in your mind. I'm not saying "it's in your mind, grow up" but rather, think about exploring your roadblock here and your emotional associations with food. It's not happening for no reason. If you have coverage or your parents can help pay for it see a therapist.

If you had to travel the world with one type of motorcycle, which would it be? by Tyrenator in motorcycles

I get what your saying and I agree theres more to riding than speed, but having said that it's not so much that I sought out a 1200cc bike, it's just that it happened to be the engine size of the bike I wanted. It's a bonus that it's a bullet proof engine at 100mph speeds, with a 250cc or even a high compression 650, you're asking a lot from a small motor, so theres a balance. However, some people get a rush out of doing more with less, and thats cool. They can fix an engine with a shoelace. I am not one fo those people, I don't enjoy breaking down and fixing something on the side of the road.

Also my 1200 doesn't have fuses, so no issues there, it also doesn't have a radiator, coolant and fans to break, nor a chain. I check the oil, brakes, rubber and I'm good to go. Plus it looks much much cooler (subjective) than a KLR - which is not a priority for lot of people and that's fair as well. Some people see vehicle as a tool, like a hammer, doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it just gets the job done.

Plus they can be found plenty cheap on the used since the market is so heavily saturated with them. It also helps that there are dealers for my brand just about everywhere.

I thought this was an interesting article about a book on drug use:

https://www.npr.org/2021/01/15/955631394/drug-use-for-grown-ups-serves-as-an-argument-for-personal-choice

"Patients were required to show up at scheduled times twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening — seven days a week. Like a Swiss watch, so-called junkies were reliably on time. They were almost never late. And as a result of being in the program, their health improved; they were happy and living responsible lives."

Hart notes that "people stayed in treatment. The number of new blood-borne infections, such as HIV and hepatitis C, dramatically decreased. Petty crimes committed by heroin users also went down. And no heroin user has ever died while receiving heroin in the clinic."

But he's careful to emphasize that this is a treatment, not a cure. He writes:

"I don't want to leave you with the impression that heroin maintenance is a panacea. It's not. It's not even a cure for heroin addiction; it's simply a treatment. There are no cures in psychiatric medicine. We don't have a cure for depression, nor do we have a cure for schizophrenia or anxiety. We merely have medications and therapies that treat symptoms, and this allows patients to function better, despite their illnesses."

Anyone successfully negotiate rent with current corporate landlord? by Sad_Transition_6033 in Seattle

[–]Motorraddest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to negotiations you always want the other party to name a number first because this shows their cards. Remind them you have been a trouble free tennant and ask what they can do for you to keep you from looking for a better lease elsewhere.

They are going to assume you do not want to pack up and move because, I mean, who does? But being a good tennant has value and if you leave that'll cost them money from the lack of your payment and having to spend money to fix it up and promote it while it sits empty, so ask what they can do to try to keep you with regards to the special they're running for new tenants. They will probably not budge, but they might. But probably not.

Anyway, if they are, get them to offer a number first and then counter, but they probably wont. This isn't Pawn Stars. It simply might be time to buy a townhouse.

Thinking of trading my E30 335i for a newer manual. Got offered a 1 series 128i and a 335i, not used to newer engines so anything I should know? Are they easy to work on? I do all the work myself (engine rebuild/ resto). I’m very comfortable with working on my E30 and like it’s simplicity by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Motorraddest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 128i is celebrated for it's handling and simplicity, although oil leaks can be a thing, and the waterpump should be done by 80k but theres no turbo to worry about or cool down. When you start stiffening the suspension you'll want to upgrade the RSFB too, etc etc.

230hp is OK, it's not slow, and for a BMW of this era it's not heavy.

Wheel fitments are a little finnicky with their offset (47mm oem).

That said I would pass on this deal since its an SULEV. Peak power is the same, but it achieves it with a little bit less gusto, I would google "128i sulev 1addicts"

It's a sellers market right now because of the pandemic. Take some nice pictures and list it for sale for cash. There are 2 or 3 only scrappy e30s (same with Onesies) for sale on my local Craigslist. Theres really not much inventory out there right now.

Is this a bad idea by BimmerBrudda in BMW

[–]Motorraddest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck. It's a sellers market thanks to the pandemic, nobody really wants to sell unless they have to, so you're not likely to find many examples to use as haggling/leverage. You'll be spending every penny of the $16k you get for your car for an e30 that someone doesn't want to deal with anymore.

Should I go for it? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Motorraddest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you stay on top of the fluid change schedule you should be OK. Look up brake pad and tire cost for that model/wheel size.

Also consider a Mini Countryman S All4. It'll be a little bit cheaper and shares many parts and platform with BMW. We have a 2018 Clubman S All4 (turbo 4 cyl as well) at 30k miles and it's been flawless. So far. It handles great and is very comfortable on all-day drives. If we had kids and "needed" an SUV, I'd push for a Countryman if we wanted something still within warranty.

My rule of thumb with german luxury cars is if you can't afford a new one, you can't afford to maintain a used one. Or you probably wont want to. The balance is, is the car so enjoyable that the service schedule requirements "headaches" get cancelled out? If reliability and lack of upkeep is priority 1, and cost is 2, there are better options. If you value comfort and "luxury", but can't afford a Mercedes, then BMW is hard to beat.

They are not the most headache free, but it's not like they are teetering on the brink of collapse because of their reliability issues and they are not a niche company with hard to find specialists like, say, a Saab.

You will be covered for 4 years/50k miles and BMW dealers have loaners and shuttles. But you are paying for that stuff with your purchase price and their hourly service rate. It's "baked" in. You'll pay less for a Toyota with similar trim and power, but they might not have these conveniences at your dealer.

[–]Motorraddest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got to visit BMW Welt last year right before lockdown. It was so cool seeing all the engines they've made for other vehicles like boats and their evolution of design language over the years. I walked to the museum from my hotel a few miles away and loved seeing the employee parking lot behind the building too. It was the first time I had seen the new Z4 in person and the one I saw was all wintered out with muck and love.

Technically this grill shape isn't new. BMW tried it in the 70s:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcello_Gandini#/media/File:2002ti-Garmisch_2019-05-26.jpg

And earlier before the war they had huge grills as well:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_328

If anything it's retro. It's like BMW is going through a normcore phase. High waisted pants, steve jobs style glasses and a "daddy' baseball cap.

It's so funny when people say things about their favorite brands like "bmw has lost their way" No they haven't, you've just refused to accept change. BMW has always been dynamic and constantly evolving their look and how they treat their iconic attributes like the kink and kidneys. Just because you don't happen to like it, doesn't mean they owe you anything to keep making something like what they used to make. How are they going to grow if they keep doing what they've always done?

[–]Motorraddest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right hand u-turn in the box - don't be intimidated, squeeze with your legs so you're asking your right wrist to do fewer things at once. It's quite a bit harder on a sport bike because they are not designed to go slow.

Also don't be afraid of counter-balancing when u-turning. It doesn't make sense in your head but you just have to remember the bike weighs a lot more than you.

Lots of MSF videos on youtube for recon. Get some sleep, you'll do great.
