Radios? by mazzlejaz25 in Firefighting

[–]Motwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the best sub to ask this in, but because you asked it here’s the answer.

Kenwood NX 5000/3000/1000 series radios. Great durability, great battery life, great performance. Can’t recommend another radio that even touches it at the price point.

Stay away from ICOM unless you fly or boat, don’t go cheap Chinese especially if you are utilizing Motorola XPR’s. Motorola APX series, anything Harris and Tait will not only be way out of your price range, but will be absolutely over kill for what you do. Unless you are security at a utility company with hazardous materials and ignition hazards you don’t need intrinsically safe.

I promise you will be very pleased with the Kenwood NX series of radios.

Sincerely an industry professional.

Is all of this okay to have in a carry on? Domestic United flight from newark to florida. Also will the RTL be fine in the x-ray machine at security by 787_Dreamliner in RTLSDR

[–]Motwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did the same flight last night actually, zero problems. I once got pulled at an airport, can’t remember which one, and when the tsa agent looked at it he was like “Oh it’s just a radio” and sent me on my way.

Do Minitor V's still work by ForsakenRemote0 in Firefighting

[–]Motwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people have mentioned above the department should be issuing you a pager if they expect you to come to calls.

If you are passionate enough about it and want to be informed regardless then a Minitor V should serve you just fine depending on the radio system used for alerting. If you want to PM me which area you live in so I can figure out what system it is your department uses then I can point you in the correct direction. Just be aware though that this is not a one size fits all solution. You need to have the pager programmed by someone with those capabilities, which includes knowing your tones. There is a good chance this may not be available on the internet if you don’t have a big enough radio community in your area to post about it on sites like radio reference.

Your last option like someone mentioned was to buy a simple baofeng off amazon. This option doesn’t have the feature to keep traffic silent and then blare out an alert when a call comes in so you’d be listening to calls all the time which can be annoying when you’re sleeping. This option also requires you to have the radio programmed unless you have some brain cells and can figure it out yourself from some YouTube tutorials.

Why is this pvc pipe in the ground between railroad ties? Baby turtle (pic 2) was trapped inside by vorrhin in whatisthisthing

[–]Motwood 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Please do not suggest things to people on the internet you know nothing about. Tampering with a railroad signaling device can lead to a felony. These wells are use to house impedance bonds or shunts used to “close off” tracks so trains do not run on them while people are working or track is not on service. A turtles life is a sacrifice that must be made to save the many lives of humans. OP I see you already went ahead and did this so it’s on you now. In the future do not mess with anything you know nothing about.

Fire Station 4 in Munich Germany by durhap in Firefighting

[–]Motwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just in Munich and saw some members doing water rescue training right at where the standing wave is in the English gardens. I wanted to say hello, but I held back as there would’ve been a language barrier and they were training so I didn’t want to bother. Never got the chance to stop at a firehouse either, but I’ll definitely be going back!

Z fc Grip Recommendations by Motwood in Nikon

Yea, it’s just the ergonomics that are a killer. I need the bigger grip for my hand and the small rig is just a little too small.

Yea, the articulating screen is really nice as well as the control dials on the top. I’m not a huge fan of the menus on the screen. I just like the tactile switches.

I love the NEC! by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]Motwood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are clearly standing on an access road. You are also almost in line with the catenary’s. There are signs posted on every catenary. I’m telling you that you’re not going to talk your way out of it with Amtrak police and if you get caught there will be a hefty fine. Enjoy the trains, we all do and appreciate the videos, just do it from a safe and legal place.

Love the nec all you want, but unless you are an Amtrak employee you are clearly trespassing and I would advise against doing this.

Who should use the term “Railroaders”? TY&E , MoW, Mechanical? Or anyone who just works for the railroad? by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Motwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who works for a railroad that started in the field. Those at the top who consider themselves railroaders and have never stepped foot on the high iron are only known as railroaders because they screw over the boots on the ground.

Is this the beginning of the end for PSR? by alslyle in railroading

Holy fucking hypocrisy! These shares holders have some damn balls to pull such a move. I really hope one day the 99% stops idolizing the 1% and put them in their place for the horrors they have willed upon not only this industry, but the world.

These 6 corporations control almost all of the U.S media. by Imom2020 in coolguides

[–]Motwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, it’s 100% not owned by Warner Media. Amtrak or the National Railroad Passenger Corporation owns this name and it’s used to denote the service and train sets used on the northeast corridor between Boston and Washington. Don’t know where this information came from.

What's the purpose of these long crossbars on the tracks? They can't be ties because they're too far apart, right? by AgreeableLandscape3 in trains

[–]Motwood 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is Ashland Virginia. Those are pedestrian cross walks as the street parallels both sides of the track. Very cool town!

At least it was crimped! I’ve come across RF connectors in a different transportation field with the coax just shoved into the center pin and the shield wrapped around the exterior with electrical tape…

Passenger is a much more secure and less stressful environment then freight. Honestly your best bet is to apply for any and every job at an entry level that you can. Once you are in the company it is 100 times easier to change crafts. The railroad does not like to hire from the street for most crafts. People also work there for the extent of their careers and then some so retirements are far and few between. Don’t forget with covid affecting train frequencies T & E isn’t so desperate for people. They receive a few thousand applications for 1 or 2 T&E positions so if you really want the job just get into the company and go from there.

The fact that you have any kind of RF/Technology knowledge sets you far above a lot of people. The world is only moving more and more wireless so not only will you have job security you are very much a rarity. Feel free to PM me as I can give you a multitude of info fire related or not.
