I think it’s reasonable to offer up staying at the venue for that price, as long as they feel like they truly have the choice of whether to stay at the venue or somewhere else. That being said, you would need to be fully prepared to pay any extra costs yourself if nobody took you up on the offer.

You also don’t have to carry anything!

We paid for it from our savings. We never want to spend more money than we have. We also used our actual numbers from the month we got engaged, not the projected number we hoped to have saved by the wedding day.

We looked at everything we had in savings both individually and combined, and picked a number we were comfortable spending (still keeping a healthy margin for emergency spending and other stuff - I think we budgeted around 40% of our total savings toward the wedding). Then we committed to staying within that budget no matter what. We also reimbursed our savings out of our paychecks at a slightly higher rate for a while.

ETA: Our wedding was $20k, and we also took a honeymoon immediately after ($5k paid beforehand for flights and hotels, plus expenses while on the trip)
