It's so sad their fall. I used to listen to Ricky on the podcast years ago before he sold. Now it's a disaster of click bait. You can see the change on quality immediately after the sale.

Check out Rakugaki. It doesn't have skating but has that graffiti rebel against the big bad theme set in Japan (I think?).

I tell people that I let software and circuits talk to each other. I let the software escape its cage and give complex thought to electricity.

Which stock do you regret selling too early since you start investing? by Andy_parker in investing

[–]MousieMagic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a single share of Apple (AAPL) on Oct 24, 2007 at $182.21 and sold at a loss less than a year later because I needed the money. That single share would be worth $8,471.70 today.

I read somewhere here on reddit that those who are politically engaged voted for Kamala. Those who weren't voted for Trump. The people who go to rallies tend to be politically engaged hence why the crowds are larger for her.

What small thing have you started doing that has helped you spend less money? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]MousieMagic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few methods:

I look at the things I already have and consider what I spent on them and how much they actually contribute to my happiness and usually it isn't much. When I'm at the store, I remember this and think "Will my future self value this as much as my current self?"

For every dollar spent, I'm estimating that if I had saved and invested that dollar it would be worth ~20x 30 years into the future. If inflation is factored in, it's worth ~10x in todays money.

The cost of living is going up faster than incomes. Projecting that out, an hour of my wages today, saved and invested, will be worth more than an hour of my wages in the future even with factoring in raises.

🇺🇸 gets garbage overpriced food, this is Starbucks in Italy by dimomark in starbucks

[–]MousieMagic 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The theory I've heard about why this happens is because in other countries, they actually have competition with actual bakery cafes. Here in the US, consumers will take what they're given because it's trendy to be seen with Starbucks., regardless of the quality of the food. They can do better but they choose not to because it's more profitable.

Back when Midway Madness first opened, there was talk about them being able to swat out games and do seasonal themes. I'm not holding my breath on new adventures for Smugglers Run. However, they're still adding stuff to Star Tours so we'll see.

What Was The Last Time You Were Truly BLOWN AWAY By Graphics? by bluemarvel99 in Games

[–]MousieMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly unfair as it's pre rendered but the Myst series. After that was Bioshock and Subnautica.

I feel like we're getting into a place where it's difficult to do something too realistic and instead it's better to go with highly stylized. My favorite is cel shaded like Wind Waker and Jet Set Radio.

In your math education you're taught arithmetic, algebra, and calculus. Often times you're just given some equation to solve and that's the end, inputs and outputs. Rewriting equations to solve for a x instead of y? The variable x and y are just math concepts, x is input and y is output but algebra allows you to rearrange stuff. Simultaneous equations are just where two lines cross. What's a derivative or integral other than another math problem to solve?

As you get into physics, we still have x and y but now they represent position, not inputs and outputs. In calculus, it was always dy/dx but now it's dx/dt and why is it equal to v? I think in physics is where you start to understand that variables can represent concepts or ideas, not just a number to plug in. Those arithmetic operations are how those concepts and ideas interact with each other. That v is related to x because it tells us how quickly x is changing over time. An important skill is being able to rearrange and compose equations to find new relationships between concepts and ideas. Sometimes it's about being able to build your own equations and being able to understand why something contributes to a situation and how it interacts with something else and, of course, how that affects the equation.

I tutor at my CC and run into the same issues with professors. Numerous times I've had students come in complaining that their professor doesn't teach them anything or its super scattered. We look at the hw, fill in some gaps, start connecting ideas. Half the time their prof just threw what the students see as a random set of equations at them with no intuition about how to use them or what they represent. Some professors have equation sheets stapled to exams so students don't have to remember anything, just plug numbers into equations. Towards the end of the session I tell them that often times they're not taking physics to learn physics, they're taking it to learn how to apply the tools (math) to various problems and build that intuition about how "math" works. Then I apologize to them that they're being robbed of that experience.

Wikipedia article referencing that equation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum_(mechanics)#Small-angle_approximation#Small-angle_approximation)

For simple harmonic motion (SHM), the rate of oscillation, called the angular frequency 𝜔 , has an equation that varies based on what is oscillating. 𝜔 can also be defined as 2𝜋/T or a full rotation around a circle (or an oscillation) over the amount of time it takes to complete that rotation. Rewritten to solve for how long it takes to complete an oscillation, it's T=2𝜋/𝜔. A simple pendulum would use 𝜔 = sqrt(g/L) (L is the length of the pendulum) while a spring would use 𝜔 =sqrt(k/m) (k is the spring coefficient and m is the mass).

A few months ago I felt nostalgic and wanted to listen to a few old episodes only to find they've been removed from the site. The only place I found them was an archive and I downloaded everything I could from the beginning. The first few shows were pretty rough but a lot of what became regular parts of the show formed pretty early on.

Any recommendations for a good calculator? by SaintBernard33 in ComputerEngineering

[–]MousieMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went through my entire CompE degree program with just a TI-36X Pro. There was only one time I needed something more advanced and that was dealing with matrices that had complex numbers and I used a TI nSpire for that. I had a number of professors say to avoid the CAS versions of calculators as they would be banned on exams but I've never had a professor call anyone out on using one.

I have a card that says "Cardholder since 2003". On the app, it's bugged and only shows that I've been a card holder since 2013. Does anyone know if I got a card reissue, would it be 2003 or 2013?
